Hey, this is a very surprising thing. Normally Sri Lankans offer seats to persons like you. You have money to travel to another country. But you don't have money to hire a vehicle. If you want to get the train experience book tickets and go (I know only few trains have this facility). Public transportation in Sri Lanka is offered by the government for the benefit of the poor people. You should not be invading their space and complaining. You should study things before do any anything.
They dont want to hire a vehicle because they want to travel the local way. Also not all tourist are rich and most are going on budgets and most of their budget is spent on plane tickets so they have to use local transport when they get here. Yes the public transport is geared towards the poor people but it is for everyone, not just poor people. I myself use the train, and while I am not crazy rich, I do fall in to the upper middle income category. Poor or not, someone should have given them a seat.
I'm surprised nobody offered you a seat. Usually when people see a person carrying a child they'd offer their seat. That's a norm around the country here.
