You’re right, Karen never had to use vocal acrobatics to convey her amazing voice, she sang simple and so effectively. Her voice immediately grabs you

When Karen sang a song, you could hear a sad smile from deep down in her soul. Your words; haunting and elegant, capture that same feeling/sound.

First time to your channel and I enjoyed your reaction and your post song critique, not only of this song but of the current state of musical artists.
I think the description you may have been searching for regarding current music, is over-produced excess.
I grew up with the Carpenters, have always loved them. Back then I believe that music distribution options vs. music distribution options today, is also a big factor in the overproduction of music by today's artists.
We grew up buying albums, then 8-tracks, cassettes and CDs. When the technology and distribution evolved into MP3s and streaming, it changed the industry forever.
Before production of individual songs for MP3s or streaming, which could be purchased individually, back in our day you had to buy an entire album to hear an artist, even if you had only heard one song on the radio early-on that you liked. There were just as many singers trying to get record contracts and break into the industry, but it was so much more expensive to produce an entire album, that the singers had to have actual, real and unadulterated talent for a record company and producer to take a chance on them.
So to hear new music from our favorite artists, we had to wait usually from six months to a year until a new album of their music came out. And in that way the artists developed lifelong fans, and lifelong careers.
These days, because people can purchase or stream a single song, the music field is crowded with way too many singers of marginal talent, because a single song is much easier and cheaper to produce. So it seems as if they each try and come up with something "special" to distinguish themselves, which can be something gimmicky, or obnoxious, or just overly-trying.
Today a singer might have success with one or two songs and then you never hear from them again, with a long line of wannabe new singers attempting to break in to the industry that follow right after them.
I know as a reactor you have to choose your words carefully because so many people can so easily be offended, especially if you mention a specific artist that they are particularly fond of. But as you said, it's strictly your opinion and there are no wrong opinions, and you have every right to express them.
I too like a few of today's artists, but very sparingly. Because of the overproduction, I find that I don't want to play them very frequently, because listening to them wears me out.
There is very obvious evidence as to the quality of singers from past years on RUclips, with all of the younger reactors who are discovering music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and are absolutely amazed at the true talent that is exhibited, without all of the smoke and mirrors, flash, glitter, back-up dancers, staging, costumes and auto tune.
Keep up the great reactions to good music. You have earned a new Subscriber today.
    ☮️ Steve

You know Sinatra was once asked if there was any concert he'd pay money to see and he said "The Carpenters". He said he thought Karen Carpenter had an amazing voice and she is the only singer he'd pay money to see.

Your assessment of today's singers as compared with Karen is spot on. There are just so many songs by Carpenters that are sheer perfection; I think they all are actually. Wait until Christmas! Their Christmas albums are unmatched; "Merry Christmas, Darling," has become a modern-day classic for example, and I personally think she blows Garland out of the water with her version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." I have not seen "We've Only Just Begun" amidst your reactions (I may at have missed it) but this became THE wedding song of a generation-- it was merely originally a song from a television commercial for a bank which Richard heard and thought would be perfect for Karen. It sure was. Seven weeks at number one and ultimately became their signature song.
    Keep up the great reactions!

nice to see you added "superstar" as some of us recommended. this song not only represents the group but also the time frame as well. it's strange how something can make you feel so comfortable and empty at the same time as karen's voice does.

Karen Carpenter has perfect pitch. on the studio recordings those we’re probably done in one take and if you listen closely she’s doing her own backing vocals. Her brother Richard is also extremely talented he also does some backing vocals and he even sings the lead on some songs.

OK, excellent reaction - you've now taken a big step into the wonderful world of the music of the Carpenters - it's never too late, and you will never want to leave - almost everyone who hears Karen sing describes her voice exactly as you did: haunting, elegant, smooth as silk and comforting - one hears beautiful and resonant and heartwarming a lot - and yes, to answer your question, she is in a special class all by herself - you will hear why as you listen to more of their songs, such as "Rainy Days and Mondays" or "We've Only Just Begun" or best of all "You're The One" - thanks, and enjoy the journey...

You hit the nail on the head her voice is haunting. She takes you somewhere else when she sings. Her own heartache is in her voice. She conveys the hurt and the sadness.

Another effortless voice, extremely sweet and understated is Olivia Newton-John. She doesn't have power, but delivers heart into her songs in a beautiful way. Here's a great live example. Note the microphone cord as this is before the introduction of wireless microphones. This video is from 1978. Incidentally she was good friends with Karen Carpenter. ruclips.net/video/PoCY80x5VQg/видео.html

What's missing is her contributing or presence in ANY Carpenters film documentaries or biographies. Authors & producers invited everyone who was a friend to come forward & doubt Ms Olivia was sorely forgotten. They'd mentioned how she & Karen were BFFs. Something isn't ringing correctly with her avoidance & non participation!

Okay, I just subscribed, purely based on how you react to Carpenters. Please do Evanescence. I know they are early 2000s but Amy Lee's voice ... try Lithium and Going Under for two very different sounds. As obviously they are my favourites. Oh, and Superstar is my favourite Carpenters song. In fact, one of my favourite songs of all time.

You absolutely should hear this song man. It's a LUCIANO PAVAROTTI'S masterpiece called "che gelida manina"
    ruclips.net/video/pR2W37WFUnE/видео.html
there are no English subtitles but it makes no difference as he sings with his heart and therefore easily conveys the emotions he experiences while singing.
