"1974"....my first job in Atlanta was with the Water Department and the infrastructure was described as "antiquated" then. This is a problem that was "kicked" into the future, now here we are.😎 shadylady
They said earlier that it was 2 pipes - one 38" & one 42" - with a third line running in the same area. I'm guessing that the first break eroded the soil around the second pipe, causing it to break. The pipes' designed strength is gained factoring in the weight of the compacted soil that surrounds them. Once that soil disappears, so does the designed strength. With as long as this water has been blasting under that road, I imagine there is a large void under there that the pavement is hiding. This will likely take several days to repair depending how far they have to chase the bad pipe and erosion conditions. And hopefully they can find the parts they need. They should probably call in a contractor to handle something of this size.
