Just purchased a brand new UTV. This is the best video at this point since I’m looking at buying a single axle utility trailer to haul my new toy. This video is for all new owners like myself who have no formal training on topics like this.
Just a thought.... I believe in always releasing the park brake and or take out of park, ( if equipped), after attaching a strap or two. Then after all strapped down reset the park brake or put back in park. Doing this there is then no tension on the drive line.
I've been riding dirt bikes, three wheelers and quads almost all my life and never had issues with straps. I bought a SxS last year and every trip I took at least one strap would fall off. I watched this video before I went to Sand Mountain this weekend (just got back), didn't lose 1 strap! Thank you.
I admit I've been using the tow loop in the center at each end. I didnt like it and had plans to upgrade my trailer to e-track. Not sure why I didn't give my current situation more thought. Thanks for the video... ill be tying to the lower arms and furthest outside radius rods from now until I get my e-track installed and can strap my tires down.
i equipped my trailer with TRAC system, it was rather inexpensive- probably cost me less than $150 to be able to tie down both of my UTV's with all needed parts using several 12" long track's and the clip in straps for the TRACKs, all available at my local auto parts store (NAPA). they're both tied down using the tires. the only thing i can advise is is on a wood deck trailer to make sure that at least one pair of bolt holes in each track is bolted to a frame support under the wood, or to use through bolts through the wood with fender washers on the underside and nylock nuts on the bolts so they don't come loose. the other nice thing about doing it this way is that the free end of my straps can be placed under the strap between the strap and the tire and as things are cinched down they hold the free end quite nicely and neatly.
Criss crossing the straps is a bad idea. Bleeping Jeep channel did a great demonstration showing why it's a bad idea. (Straps interfere and if one strap fails the entire strap system fails) Otherwise this is great vid! I struggled finding good info on strapping UTVs with a mixture of advice. I finally installed e tracks on my trailer with straps over the wheels and that has been my favorite UTV accessory investment yet.
Learned this a number of years ago. Was in a remote area and had a leaf spring on the trailer snap. Managed to block the trailer up to get it home but found our straps kept falling off due to the exaggerated movement of the atv chassis. More than usual. That’s how I learned tracks with tire straps are the only thing that make sense.
E or X tracks are simple to add to any trailer deck. Purchase at tractor supply or other retailers. Be sure and use grade 8, 5 or quality stainless hardware!
My Toy hauler tie down points are all inside the wheel line. How do you tie down when you can’t pull to the outside like you have on the trailer in the video? Cross cross both front and rear? (Not to the chassis)
Thanks for the information. Nice tip on writing your name and tagging your straps. Spend all that money but can’t buy a descent strap. Came across this on recommendations on you tube. I will be taking a look at your website.
The easiest way and what works the best and fastest for me is to pull the front wheels to the front rail on the trailer and hook two straps to the frame about halfway of the vehicle and tie down to the front of the trailer. There is nothing wrong with tying down to a part of the vehicle that is suspended. As long as you compress the suspension to put enough preload it wont go anywhere or have any suspension travel that creates slack in your straps. Also if you strap both front and rear you don't even need to compress the suspension because you are using tension on both sides of the frame to prevent the vehicle from moving and you can have all the suspension travel you want and it will never move. You really shouldn't tie down to the A Arms, Polaris actually tells you not to. In fact all manufacturers have tie down holes on the frames of SxS in front and rear. The correct way is to take two straps and tie the rear down a few feet behind it and then take two more and tie the front down a few feet in front of it. Tire straps are a bad idea because you can loose air pressure.
I'm using dog bones for strapping the tires. You can tie down securely and it only takes minutes. Going around the inside of the tire instead of over the top gives you a better hold in case you lose air pressure.
I use the good old fashion 1/2 inch chain and binders on all 4 corners through the lowest parts of the chassis front and rear 👍. I can see what you're saying about maybe straps tearing with the bouncing, but I would be astonished to see any issues with a little pre load on the suspension with chains and binders. Standard 1/2 inch chain has a working load of 8200 pounds
I run e-track down the entire length of the trailer deck and from there figure out where the buggy needs to sit and put e track chokes in front of the front tires, from there I used 2" e track straps over all four tires to hold it in place. makes for a very solid foundation and the unit never moves and no shock load is placed on the suspension
good stuff! i've always tied to the skid plate & sometimes the receiver hitch. Never had an issue but haven't traveled long distances or over very rough roads for very long. Will now follow your advice in the video.
Awesome video. Mother just got her first XP 1000 right after I learned this knowledge. Now I get to confidently load it properly to protect her investment.
Great Show..!! You are very professional and you know a lot about UTV and Off Road. I always watch your shows. I live in Costa Rica and I enjoy driving my RZR 1000 XP 2018 all around, i do not need a trailer to carry my unit, I just drive it any where.
Hey thanks so much for this guys. Since watching this I have tied down my RZR like you suggested and I feel better knowing my car is secure on the trailer. While driving down the road I can feel a difference in the trailer and the motion of the car. It is like the car floats on the trailer and allows the suspension to work. Thanks ✌🏼
2 inch lasso strap with “0” ring attached to racket strap with chain and hook anchor works well . 2 inch strap 3333 lbs. working load limit . Great Information !
have a d-ring strap bought at a wrecker supply company and e-track system to hold ranger on tailer. put d-ring end over the tires on all 4 tires and rachet down tight on all 4 tires
came here thinking i already knew everything about strapping yet i learned i was doing it wrong the whole time. i will definitely start strapping on the lower control arms near the hubs!!
Polaris recommends to strap the RZR on the bumper. Look at their video smh. You are spot on with your recommendation. I agree, strapping tires are the best or near it.
Cam confirm on a pro xp a 32" rubs super hard i full lock with a 5-2 wheel. So much so it rips the the skid plays down and drag everytime you go in reverse. Had to go with 1.5" forward offset A-Arms
To get tongue weight, measure height of pickup rear bumper with empty trailer attached. Then load your UTV and drive it up to where your pickup bumper is an inch lower. If you don't like the way it handles, pull forward until you have another inch. But an inch is a good rule of thumb.
You are correct that the arms can take quite a bit of load, can’t say if they’re designed to take load on a small point when they’re tied down like that though. I’d prefer to tie vehicle down per the manufactures recommendations. I was always taught not to ever tie down a vehicle by the control arms because they weren’t designed to take load like that.
I have a new single axle trailer, 5x9 ft to haul my Rubicon ATV 500. To balance ATV in transport, should I place ATV in center of trailer? Tie downs close to tires is ok?
As for the tongue weight, it really depends on your configuration, payload, etc. For example, my f250 diesel payload is such that my talon goes all the way forward on my dual axle trailer. There are some great RUclips videos showing why you want the weight as far forward as you can, relative to your setup.
I use a regular ratchet strap and push the strap through the "eye" on the hook witch makes a loop and put it over the tires .....if you've ever seen a marlin truck rack the straps works the same way .... Although my toy hauler doesn't have great tie down points and is almost impossible to tie down correctly
How many total straps do you recommend for a Can Am outlander to secure to a trailer ? 2 in front and 2 in back or 1 strap in front and 1 in the back? And I assume you strap down an outlander at the hubs like you do a utv?
good tips, i rather ppls utvs not come off and hit me! i do like the fast strap for towing. i wish u showed how to re loop a strap thru a ratchet.... and off topic, how a sway bar works.
Everyone does it differently, but for me tying off to the chassis is the strongest part of your machine and most stable. When you strap to suspension components you are getting some of the weakest points on the machine since they are intended to move. Use 4 good quality 3O00 Lb straps, cross the fronts and pull straight back in the rear AND always attach to the chassis/frame Cuz that tinfoil crap the A arms are made of would bend like cheap Chinese steel if something bad happened.
When utilizing the A-arms for strapping the ability for the machine to move is problematic for me. When loaded into my toy hauler, my pro xp4 has about 3-4" maybe 5" of play before my roll cage is hitting cabinets. What is the best way to strap down in this situation?
Just strap the upper shock mount to an a arm or spindle. We tie ours down to lower the overall cage height all the time for something like a stacker trailer. Super easy
When I purchased my RZR it came with the trailer. The previous owner used ATV Mighty Tite system. Taking your comments, this should not be used correct?
I have a 72'' car & a 64'' my 72'' fits over my E track and I tie down by the tires. My 64'' is obviously to narrow and have to tie down the chassis and not at a good angle for the E track. Is there anything on market allow me to tie down the 64'' to E track and be able to keep the strap in line with the E track?
How do you feel about a single 3" strap from left side tie down on trailer, run through the wheel spoke, across to the right side wheel spoke and ratchet at the right side tie down hook? Front and Rear being pulled down, forward and rear taught.
Understood. When I haul actual road legal cars, the locking steering wheel keeps that from happening as often. Or when I haul straight axle vehicles like JEEPS, Landcruisers and the like it works great. But seeing the UTVs and SXS' mostly have independent systems, I can see where the toe effect would compromise the tie downs.
Lol, good idea to for a video, but based on the questions and some comments, I’m not sure how many will actually listen. One suggestion, get with Speed Strap and give them some lessons as well. Looking at there pics they will add to the misuse of their products
This is way off topic, but do you happen to know make, model and year of that beautiful red truck pulling the trailer in this video? Thx! Very useful information on this video btw... I use the Rhino straps ...
You had a couple of questions about +1 etc forward arms to clear larger tires, You mentioned that you didn't mind them as long as they were a quality part. The reason Im asking is that I just picked up a 2018 X3 XDS(64") with brand new wheels and tires( 0 dirt miles less then 5 road miles) The tires are System3 RT320 33x9x15 mounted on STI HD9 5/2 offset, at full lock in the garage there is only about .75" of clearance between the rear of the tire and the fire wall. My concern is that it will rub during articulation. So is it possible to install a quality set of forward arms on my X3, if so who would you recommend on the quality parts.
We run 33's on our X3 but it is a 72 with zero clearance issues. I guess you might be pretty close on the 64". I would suggest anything from Highlifter if you can't get some from S3 or Cognito first.
Demetri Liras email shocktherapyusa@gmail your info. I’ll send you a pic of them. I don’t know the style or name but that should get you in the right spot

Strapping the tires also helps with the ride of the trailer. It uses the suspension on your vehicle in sink with the trailer

Any thoughts about putting the machine in Park vs neutral ? I have heard that hauling in Park is hard on the park pawl.

It’s truly amazing how much misinformation there is. You show the right way. So many other videos show it wrong. Glad I found you. Ty.

have a d-ring strap bought at a wrecker supply company and e-track system to hold ranger on tailer. put d-ring end over the tires on all 4 tires and rachet down tight on all 4 tires
I go through the wheels with D ring straps
Wow great video I learn something every time and wow he would be a nightmare to work for.
Tire webs. Even from tractor supply with their hardware. That way your suspension can move freely and your straps stay tight 👍🏻. #nochase

What about looping a tie down through the wheels if your wheels have large enough gaps for the straps?
Very helpful explanation on tie down. Thank you
Erickson Etrack with the strap over the wheel - best way by far
I installed those for my ATV's and I'll never go back.
this is what I use, also I have "exotic car straps" that loop through the wheels as backup for new trailers.
I agree also I have two sets so all four tires are strapped down
Bingo
That's exactly what I use
I haven’t seen a video like this in a long time. Love you guys! Also, don’t retire without curating a replacement. 😬
Polaris recommends to strap the RZR on the bumper. Look at their video smh. You are spot on with your recommendation. I agree, strapping tires are the best or near it.
Great video . Actually tied my car down correctly in toy hauler and the straps stayed tight .
Have you tried the Jeri-rigg strap? Super strong! Seems like this would be the perfect application.
Cam confirm on a pro xp a 32" rubs super hard i full lock with a 5-2 wheel. So much so it rips the the skid plays down and drag everytime you go in reverse. Had to go with 1.5" forward offset A-Arms

Informative AND entertaining. Thanks for taking the time!
This is a great video and actually very serious topic, amazing how many don't know these things!
Thank you for the post, I did invest in great straps but seems I was still using in the wrong locations

You are correct that the arms can take quite a bit of load, can’t say if they’re designed to take load on a small point when they’re tied down like that though. Excellent info...I was skeptical that it would be very informative, but boy was I wrong
I been crossing the straps under the machine. Front to back/ back to front
What about using the shipping points on the can am maverick x3. Tusk makes some tie downs that go one them for straps to hook on to

There are some great RUclips videos showing why you want the weight as far forward as you can, relative to your setup.
Hi, Love the trailer you made! Looking for something similar any suggestions? or do you sell trailers?
Would all the same advise about getting close to the tire apply to a standard ATV? (E.g Polaris 570)
i was just wondering if you have had any dealings with the new 2021 Can Am commander and if so what do you think?
How do you like the loading ramps? I work at Heavy Duty Ramps.
Sir please get your eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) checked, if you have not already. Take care.
in of my ratchet strap wrap sytap up put in an old sock work real good ?
So confusing because Polaris themselves say not to tie to the front control arms, but it seems like the best option.
I use a regular ratchet strap and push the strap through the "eye" on the hook witch makes a loop and put it over the tires .....if you've ever seen a marlin truck rack the straps works the same way .... Although my toy hauler doesn't have great tie down points and is almost impossible to tie down correctly
Over the tire strap? A bonnet?
What if you tie it off to the chassis but closer to the machine and compress the suspension a bit?
What camera are you recording with? Looks good nice and clear.
Lol. The John Wick reference was great
Awesome videos. Great information. Keep up the good work. Building my 2015 1000 XP 4 for mountain and trails so you guys are a big help.

How many total straps do you recommend for a Can Am outlander to secure to a trailer ? 2 in front and 2 in back or 1 strap in front and 1 in the back? And I assume you strap down an outlander at the hubs like you do a utv?
Depends on the bylaws in your area. I put one per wheel.
I block up under the front and rear before I tie it down so I'm not just compressing the suspension
I like that idea. With blocking there is no way the car will bounce.
Lets see a videi of post race processes on the race car. Gow do you get it so clean? What parts do you scrutinize for possible replacement?
You got it.
THANKS FOR THE HELP GONA TRY TO TIE LIKE U SAID
How about going through the rim with a d ring strap then back to the trailer

good tips, i rather ppls utvs not come off and hit me! i do like the fast strap for towing. i wish u showed how to re loop a strap thru a ratchet.... and off topic, how a sway bar works.

trailing arms are not terrible at all but man that axle plunge is no joke. the axles must plunge constantly throughout the travel.

What about using the winch as part of the tie down
very cool vlog !Thanks for sharing!
Speed Strap for the win!

I work for the railroad and we tie our machines down in a trapezoid. On the railroad cars. Always a good method. Pull in or out. /_\ or \-/
Tie a bolen you can always untie them. Ez
When I purchased my RZR it came with the trailer. The previous owner used ATV Mighty Tite system. Taking your comments, this should not be used correct?
I don't like that system. If it surrounded the front tires and held them tight in front then I am in. But not like I see in their video.
Shock Therapy llc thanks for the reply. Great informative video, I appreciate it.
I have a 72'' car & a 64'' my 72'' fits over my E track and I tie down by the tires. My 64'' is obviously to narrow and have to tie down the chassis and not at a good angle for the E track. put a second set of e-tracks down to where you can tie down the 64 as well
@@187flatliner this is what i did^^^...... my Wolverine is narrower than my KRX1000 so i'm running two different widths of tie down tracks.

How do you feel about a single 3" strap from left side tie down on trailer, run through the wheel spoke, across to the right side wheel spoke and ratchet at the right side tie down hook? Front and Rear being pulled down, forward and rear taught.
If I understand you correctly this would pull the front tires together or narrower. This would raise the car and loosen the straps. Probably not good
Understood. When I haul actual road legal cars, the locking steering wheel keeps that from happening as often. Or when I haul straight axle vehicles like JEEPS, Landcruisers and the like it works great.
