Their production is always so…immaculate. All the way up to Janet’s 2015 “Unbreakable.” The “sonic bed” (as Jimmy Jam calls it) of that album is just stunning and entrancing.
Every single time I listen to the Instrumental version of Human, I mentally time travel back to going to school (Grossmont College) in San Diego 1987-1992. A most adventurous period with beloved memories. A much belated Thank you to both Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for all the music you had your hands on during those years.
Damn, this sh!+ feels good even without the vocals. The musical genius of Jam and Lewis. I recall reading an article where Jam and Lewis said they used the Human League's equipment to write this song while the group was out to lunch. When they got back, this music was done and ready for vocals. A hallmark of highly skilled musical professionals to take someone else's instruments and create a huge hit.
One of my first favorites that touched my soul as a little girl. My parents taught me the value of music and being raised in a loving house I appreciate the 80s music of my soul 1981 baby...
we are the same wavelength; this is one of my all time favorite tracks---definitely in the top 5; thus, its a constant repeat ipod.... in addition, I think its one of the best songs ever made.
I have this it is a 12 in with vocal A side Bside Instrumental i was happy it had a instru M. because i loved the music i would only listen to the instrumental part more than the vocal part because i"ve heard the vocal part so many times a instrumental was like a breath of freah air .
Come on baby, dry your eyes Wipe your tears Never like to see you cry Won't you please forgive me I wouldn't ever try to hurt you I just needed someone to hold me To fill the void while you were gone To fill this space of emptiness I'm only human Of flesh and blood I'm made Human Born to make mistakes So many nights I longed to hold you So many times I looked and saw your face Nothing could change the way I feel No one else could ever take your place I'm only human Of flesh and blood I'm made Human Born to make mistakes (I am just a man) (Human Human) Please forgive me (The tears I cry aren't tears of pain They're only to hide my guilt and shame I forgive you, now I ask the same of you While we were apart I was human too) (Human Human) I'm only human Of flesh and blood I'm made (I am just a man) Human Born to make mistakes (Human Human).
I totally concur hardly. Jimmy & Terry has also been my top favorite musical production team on the top of my list till this very day. I miss the Minneapolis sound era of 1986 to 1991. Oh and I recently discovered in find out Lisa Keith who's of course part of the Flytetyme team assisted with additional synth-keyboard session playing and backup light singing along side with The Human League girls Joanne & Susan.
I have loved this song for over 25 years and everytime i listened to it, there was a familiarity about it that i couldnt put my fingers on until minutes ago. I love Lewis and Jam, i love the way they do their music. I never realised this was theirs. Now it all makes sense. Their music is the best.
I was in Elementary when I first heard this version PBS used to play it when it signed off at eleven pm I recorded it about the early eighties and a year ago accidentally found the full version on RUclips
Jam & Lewis made a living off of those chord progressions built around the key of F-minor. You can hear it tunes from Alexander O'Neal, New Edition, Force MD's [Tender Love... *chef's kiss*], Janet Jackson, and others. I've been a super-fan of their production style since...forever. And I still drop this Human League track in the mix in 2023. ✌🏽
Cool story: The girls in Human League were a bit put off by the inclusion of Lisa Keith as the lead background vocal...so Terry Lewis came up with the killer "When we were apart, I was human too" line for one of them in order to soothe things over. Lewis said the line also happened to give the song emotional completion. TRUTH.
Hmm, I didn't know that. They should have rehearsed & included all the voices together. Do you know by chance for certain LISA COLEMAN from Prince & the Revolution assisted JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWIS as a full-in-session contributor playing synth/ keyboards during certain parts of the actual recording when Lisa Keith was around? I have heard this repeatedly back then during various interviews with Flyte time. I know they def know each other.
0.35, 0.47 etc, that bass note drops an octave each time. I know the engineers probably didn't think or know anyone would hear or appreciate those notes, but I do. ''a man"
CaapriceTube alot of artists sampled this of course but they didn't sample it correctly, this is a timeless composed masterpiece, chop it, sample backwards slow down the RPM on it, twist it up, and put me on it it's another classic,
Autumn Asters Ralph Tresvant sampled it for the remix for “sensitivity.” LFO used it for “baby be mine,” in which jam & Lewis produced the song for LFO (just more updated).
All I can say is JJ and TL nailed it. Love the sounds. If you don't like this your not from this planet. My brother's. They're the blue's brother's of our time. If you don't know you better ask somebody. 😎
back in those days , the quality of making music was so high, that was the pressure, and the record companies demand that and it all comes down to the bottom line, money,
People spent a lot more money on music in those days as a main source of entertainment. A lot of that money is now spent on Netflix and online shopping. Now they don’t have the same budget to spend on developing artists, production, music videos. It’s sad really
Ayrricka Street You know what? A lot of the die-hard Human League fans didn't like this song because it was too "street"...you know what that means...but this joint is on music playlist💯
Long love synths! But let’s not forget about the great drum machines back then too. Plus samplers! Check out the fingernail on a hair comb sample starting at 3:48. The 80’s were crazy experimental with sampling, and some of it was really cool 😎
What's cool is that the girls in Human League were a bit out off by the inclusion of Lisa Keith as the lead background vocal...so Terry Lewis came up with that one killer line for one of them to soothe things over. Lewis said it gave the song emotional completion. TRUTH.
This shot to #1 on the US Billiboard Hot 100 in 1986., and would've probably done so for almost any R&B singer at that time. Given that Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were known for elevating Janet Jackson at that time, she naturally would've soared with this. Michael Jackson, El Debarge, Whitney Houston, Peabo Bryson, Howard Hewett, Chaka Khan, Freddie Mercury and Vesta would've murdered this, effortlessly.
when i first heard this song i was so very calm that day this song is called human league and produced by jimmy jam and terry lewis now this song has a true meaning to it forsure i listen to the lyrics of this song many times and it sound so great to my ears foreal i love music and music makes me calm each day i listen to it i go crazy about music yaul

Greetings from Cost Rica!!! I couldn´t agree more Masked Avenger!!! I´m a 32 year -old man who enjoys listening to the 80´s and 90´s music. I sometimes listen to the early 2000 music. My "hot list" here in google is full of that music ONLY!!!! I´m actually listening to this music now....... I particulary love " Human" by Human league , "Crazy for you" by Madonna and ""Dirty Diana" By MJ among others..
I could listen to this every day!! Love the keyboards! But hear this - then listen to Ralph Tresvant (from New Edition) song called "Sensitivity". They both are the same pretty much just with different beats and a slightly different arrangement. I never get tired of that Jam & Lewis sound.

That's the thing about 80's music. No matter how old it gets, it still sounds as fresh as when it came out. #Forevernew
Yes so true

The groove and those keys, especially right when it gets cooking at the top is so iconic of the era. Great track
That groove is just so smooth and relaxing. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were amazing at that time. Everything they touched turned to platinum.
All time.

Jam and Lewis's greatest gift was their ability to mimic a therapist. They understood their acts better then they knew themselves.
Just wow! I would be happy but at the same time like damn, y'all pulled them sounds out of our instruments 😳 lol
then they used their own backup singers and session musicians and made the human league lip sync over them lol
THE LEGENDARY JIMMY JAM N TERRY LEWIS KILLED THIS BEAT
The harmonic content is so evocative, emotional. The F minor 7 over the Db - such longing in that harmony.
One of my first favorites that touched my soul as a little girl. My parents taught me the value of music and being raised in a loving house I appreciate the 80s music of my soul 1981 baby...
I think this is the best track that was ever made in the history of music. I can never get enough of it. Damn
This is one of the songs that totally sum up the human experience.

You must like Ralph Tresvant's "Sensitivity". It's the exact same beat made by the same people.
Dominik Sobolewski I love that song I bought the 7” Record in 1990 but since bought the CD of eBay and play it along with the record
So calm, nostalgic and timeless. I absolutely love Synth.
Jimmy and Terry were just getting started with their soon-to-be-Legendary Flyte Tyme Sound with this one....
An instrumental of respect.
it should be law all flytetyme productions are released with instrumentals lol best song-writing/production teams ever.......peace.
no doubt hands down
Truly awesome fortunate enough to meet them years ago, the guys were humble and real !!
Man u said it well 👍
absolutely nailed it. number 1..songs, arrangements, melodies. Timeless.

Totally agree!!! They WERE the soundtrack of the 80’s. They, along with L.A. & ‘Face, and Teddy Riley, brought the New Jack Swing to us!!
Hey look, everybody! It’s music with layers and chords and complexity and emotion!
@Funky Benzoyl
Sadly that is non existent today.
How your heart feels when falling in love or wishing for it. Beautiful song.
