Ben Monder interviewed by Pablo Held

- When my dear friend and trio comrade Jonas Burgwinkel showed me Ben Monder’s incredible album “Excavation” sometime in 2005 my musical world got turned upside down. Ben’s music has had a major impact on me and my writing. When I look at certain compositions of mine I can clearly see his influence ( i.e. “Meta”). Whenever there was a rumor of an upcoming Ben Monder record I awaited each one with great excitement and checked it out as soon as it came out. I’d say I’ve spent the most time with his own records “Excavation”, “Oceana”, “Flux” and “Hydra”. Though I also listened quite a bit to his records with Theo Bleckmann like “No Boat”, “At Night” or “Origami“. I also love his sideman work on records by Jochen Rückert, Paul Motian, Maria Schneider, Bill McHenry, or Tony Malaby.
In this conversation we talk about his process of finding new harmonies, composing, influences, working with Paul Motian, his relationship with Theo Bleckmann, memories of special concerts he attended when he was coming up and much more.
I was very excited to talk to Ben and I’m happy I can share this with all of you here.

Thank you, Pablo, for such an excellent interview!! This is by far the BEST interview with Ben Monder I've ever heard. While I appreciate his musicality when I listen to him play tunes like 'My One And Only Love,' listening to him discuss his experiences, philosophy, and musical ideas in such an intelligent and eloquent manner makes me sense where his music is really coming from or going. I'm looking forward to listening to him perform live with the Bad Plus at Monterey Jazz Fes in a few days.
Wow that’s very kind of you. Thank you! It was such a pleasure to talk to Ben.
Have fun on the concert!
I knew he was gonna mention Leo Brouwer! Now i can sleep well tonight! Goofing aside, these interviews are invaluable, even for people who doesn't know any of these magnificient musicians. Can't thank you enough Mr. Held.
Thank you for the lovely feedback
thank you so much for the interviews!
¡Gran entrevistador! Mucho material que recoger de tus entrevistas y nada de hablar en el aire... .

Thanks Itamar. By now I have a couple of records with Leo Brower and I love it!!
@@PabloHeldmusic great!
Beautiful interview! There's so little info on Ben out there, and you really did a good job of getting a view into his process. Do you have the handwritten charts he sent?
Excellent, thank you!
cheers!
Wonderful. Thanks.

This is great! Would love to hear the unedited version.
Hey Ben, this is pretty much it... I only got rid of a few "uhm"s and thought pauses!

haha: "i have 0 artistic talent" - ben monder
Either he quotes a part of the score from the film The Unforgiven in Tredecadrome or he arrived at those notes randomly.
Hi Pablo! Great interview, congratulations! On the Bartók question about the Beethoven excerpt. In fact, Beethoven's Fugue in C minor (Op. 131) and Muss es sein? a recognizable version of his motifs (op. 135) is included in movement 2 of I. String Quartet.
Hi. Amazing! Great interview! Someone knows the player’s name “ Chasing Ear...?
