the chest the common theory is it is his wife's stuff he carries around. and the wife's reaction when he gets home is because there was a cut subplot where his wife felt he was having an affair and making up this ridiculous story about this guy Del Griffith to hide the fact he was cheating. the wife was so emotional when she met him because she didn't think the story was real till she met him and she realized he wasn't lying
Steve Martin’s F bomb tirade at the car rental counter was one of the biggest laugh out loud movie theater moments I ever witnessed. RIP, John Candy and John Hughes.
I was there, I can confirm, that 1st weekend it came out. People were *falling* out of their chairs, gasping for breath. I cannot stress how LOUD the laughs were..m it was so unexpected and it hit with full force. I uploaded the TV version of that scene where Martain delivers the PG version of it... and people have actually said "it's just as funny without the swearing" 😂 uh.. no. No it's not. And I know it cause I was there that opening weekend.
Hey Hannah and Toy, I know their pain all too well. ------ I was going to see my daughter for thanksgiving about 10 years ago, on a trip from NYC to DC on the bus. -------- A car hits the bus at the Delaware Memorial toll gate. -------- When the state trooper runs everyone's info, he finds our bus driver has 3 outstanding warrants and must be arrested on site.-------- The company couldn't send another driver for 6 hours. ------- Needless to say, a 5-hour trip took 18 hours to complete, but I made it.
This movie is a true holiday classic. Never trust anyone who doesn't love John Candy. You are correct, Ben Stein, the flight announcer guy, was also the economics teacher in Ferris Bueller. Ben was actually a finance and wealth management professional. He and John Hughes were good friends. Basically any money advice Ben wanted to give you was worth its weight in gold. He was also famous for the Clear Eyes commercials. The car rental lady in this movie was Edie McClurg. She was the principals secretary in Ferris Bueller. She was such a gem! I had a crush on her when I was a teenager. RIP to all these GREATS!

Fun reaction for the holidays! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: this Thanksgiving movie is such a solid winner, I will confidently put it up against any Christmas contender, any time. John Candy plays one of the most annoying characters and still made me love him. And the twist at the end! 😮 It made me so sad I felt like I was watching my Raiders lose the tuck rule game all over again 😂😭
One of the best comedies of the 80s. John Hughes did so many fantastic films back then Ferris Buelller's Day Off, Pretty In Pink, Uncle Buck, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, The Home Alone films and many more. The plot here lends itself to great comedy scenarios with Steve Martin as the straight guy, and John Candy as the clown. Funniest part is when the car catches fire. I saw this at the cinema on release, and the audience were nearly choking with laughter. A very poignant ending when we realise Del's wife has died and he is in fact homeless. A shame too that John Candy died so young at only 44 and indeed John Hughes himself died very young only 59. Still he left a great legacy of films, of which this was one of his best.
i'm just thinking they could have used steve martin's singing talent to better effect on the bus scene though. i mean that's what he got his start with his comedy songs

I never picked up on them lol I also grew up where a lot of the filming locations used to be. Specially the car runs into the motel. I lived 10 minutes from there. Back then there were a lot of farm lands in the area and now there are not as many farm areas in Gurnee Illinois
