    I'm not implying that he's not grieving for his wife, but family members said when his wife was around, and healthy, and up and about, she kept on top of his hoarding and kept it from getting out of hand, so it sounds like the hoarding tendencies were there long before his wife became ill and passed.

    • @Ms.Byrd68
      @Ms.Byrd68 3 года назад +80

      Agreed which means you gotta go DEEPER to actually help him. You have to find the REAL TRIGGER for his 'Hoarding' and address it if you want him to get beyond it. His wife is simply his MOURNING for her. I understand the issue with the clothing. I kept a dress that my Grandmother wore in one of her last pictures (as a teaching assistant). She passed back in the 80s, the dress is DEEP in storage but I have long been at the point where I can now get rid of it. If I come across it, that's exactly what I will do... get rid of it.

      Hurting people hurt others. My Mom & my brother were hoarders, and lived together. Astounding how much trash they allowed me to toss. It was literally unopened mail from 60 years, plus dime store gifts from dozens of family that she couldn’t offend them by not keeping! Only one room was off limits, my brothers’.2 years later Mom died. My brother allowed me to clean and purge his room. That night he said “ I had the best peaceful sleep of my entire life”
      One month after Mom he died. Gratitude for the perseverance, grace and privilege of serving others. RIP Mom & Frank.

I think that it will be better for him to sell it to a young family or relatives, sell most valuable belongings, settle his finances and move to an elderly home or community. He definitely needs somebody to take care of him, communicate more, find some new connections. He may even find a nice lady that can relate to his pain. I have way too many clothes, jewellery, bags, shoes, makeup, nail polish, etc, etc...I’m definitely holding onto to emotional stuff I’ve been through. Feeling unloved in past relationships was one main reason for me, my things I have bought makes me feel valuable and loved - something no man gave me, only broken marriages. But I want to start being a minimalist, I’m not getting younger, only older and realising I don’t need clutter anymore. I grow increasingly concerned at the incompetence and ignorance of the "professionals." Eric's anger and distrust were completely reasonable and valid. He wasn't salvaging an old margarine container or useless part of a lawn mower, like some hoarders. Who throws out a pristine leather couch?! I'd be angry too.
    It's unbelievable how gaslight-y they were with him, casting completely normal things as "fragile," "mentally ill," and "problematic." Eric had insight, humility, self awareness, and he had an accurate understanding of what he needed help with.
    Sometimes the professionals MAKE people crazy, telling them they're mentally ill when they are really just mentally injured, as anyone might be suffering the loss of a loved one and having some embarrassing habits exposed!
    It's frightening to think that people whose job it is to help actually hurt with expert brain washing on people already in a vulnerable condition.
    Why is everyone talking to him like he's a silly child? He's clearly intelligent and motivated. I'm impressed with his patience at being so egregiously disrespected and patronized. I truly hope he gets better support to continue moving forward.

      Exactly! He’s elderly and disabled, likely has to be careful about money. A thousand dollar couch can’t just be tossed like that! My dad has been hoarding for decades but finally quit working and is now chipping away at his stuff. It’s a fortune!! Every little thing, even rusty junky looking things have great value on eBay and Craigslist ranging from the hundreds to thousands. Decluttering is about selling what has value, not just trashing it. My dad and any hoarder would go absolutely nuts if their stuff was handled like this.

      I agree too. "Trash" is broken, damaged, useless or unsanitary. Furniture in good condition might be surplus to requirements, but throwing it away when it should be donated or sold is unjustifiable. I'm fully with Eric on this one, and I felt the professionals, *particularly* Dorothy, were patronising a-holes.

      none of the workers threw out the couch though it was his wifes sister that told them to throw out the couch because she didnt understand the rules for whatever reason. she mentioned how she was going to auction it out without even asking eric. so they didn't do anything wrong it was just the sister in law

      @@user-np8tx5fe1n They did do something wrong by not enforcing the established rules consistently. If they allowed the sister-in-law to do anything with the couch without asking him, they're also responsible.

    Wow...Bless Dorothy and her crew. I’m sorry for Eric’s pain, but these people are helping him-many people need help and they don’t get it-they get lost in the system/cracks in society.

    If you listen closely, I think he started hoarding when she was very sick. I think he knew I was going to lose her... coping mechanism that transformed in form that he wanted to physically fill up the home.

      Actually he hoarded before she died. That is what the wife was worried about when she became Ill. She could not keep it at bay. It escalated after she died.
