In Concert The Isley Brothers couldnt hold the Commodores boots! Saw both groups several times...No comparison! I'm old school what yo do in the studio doesnt count it's what you do live that speaks of your real talent! Just my humble opinion...Peace
I fail to understand why The Commodores are NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Like Kool and The Gang, they are LOOOOOONG overdue for induction. I'm ALL for Lionel Richie getting inducted but NOT before The Commodores.
seen them last weekend. 2 original members, Walter Orange and William king. plus J. d . Nicholas from Heatwave who had been with them for 35 years. they got down. gr8 show.
The Commodores, Earth Wind and Fire, The Ohio Players, The Isley Brothers and Paliament- Funkadelics had. Detroit on lock back in the day. We felt like they belonged to us, and every street in our area had their music blasting on Saturday morning car wash and lawn cutting days.
Such an amazing era in black music. Not just the funk, but brothas could slow it down and saaang too. Songs of consciousness about our world back then. And as a band, you had to be able to "turn it out" at a show
All the original Commodores here are at their funkiest in this video ,"fancy dancer". This is real soul and they really heat up the stage. Love it. Would love to obtain a copy of this performance on dvd along with their other 70's performances.
In Their heyday, they were top of the rock. Caught them in 78, Columbia SC. As live performers, and minus the over-the-top special effects, this group could is among the best and the fact they're not in the Rock and Roll HOF, is a testimony to the short-sighted, racial indifference to the invaluable musical legacy made by African Americans in this country. Not only should the Commodores be in, but Lionel should be twice (Co-wrote 'We are the World'! Great performance of a badass song, Thanks for posting!
It baffles me why people call Lionel Ritchie a sell out, if you you are a true fan of the commodors, you would know they were a diverse group, Country, Pop, Gospel, Funk they did it all.
True Funk of the Commodores. Followed them from 1971 1st time I saw them, met them. Would go see them every convert I could when they were in Uostate NY. When Lionel Richie went solo, joined HIS Fan Club in 1973, followed him ever since & he's going stong at age 73...Gershwinn Award,, Rock and Roll Hallbof Fame WITHOzuT the Commodores? Early 80'sCommodores replaced him with JD from Heatwave, then Night Shuft got recignized...
Its called musical growth, a lot of fans want you to stay in a box, real artist don't comform to that. of course i like the stuff he did with the commodors, but i like his solo stuff as well.
@@josephedric4081 I don’t care for that song either but he has plenty of great music after the Commodores,. You may not like but a lot of people do. Who wants to continue to do the same music forever.
I saw the Commodores open for Jr. Walker and the All Stars at the Apollo theatre in Harlem. The headliners? SMOKEY ROBINSON ON HIS LAST TOUR WITH MIRACLES. The Commodores didn't even have hit records yet. they sand cover tunes. I distinctly remember them singing Al Greens "Lets Stay Together". The dance routine in this video clip (2:28 - 3:36) is straight funk fire!!!
One of my bigger musical regrets -- not having seen the Commodores and The Jackson Five together in concert. Not sure how long they toured together, but it must have been a great ride.
while i do agree with you. lionel is doing alot of this stuff in his shows now. at 63 yrs old he still brings quite a bit of energy when doing brickhouse. and he sounds good performing the song. walter orange, who sang brickhouse on the album and in shows, but lionel sounds good doing it too and could have performed the song back in the day
Lionel Richie probably stopped doing Funk, because music taste changed and he didn't want to stop selling records. He also got older and this type of music is for the young, or at least the young at heart. Can you imagine a 50 or 60 year old doing this on stage :) Funk and R&B is definitely my favorite music genre.
@CoolStuffZone i do agree with you. lionel realized where the music was going and probably wanted to continue to grow...but he is more or less doing this music now when he performs and he and a couple of the commodores have performed together in recent years although there has been no official reunion with all of the remaining members
@narxstephanie My late grandfather always wanted the Commodores to get back together. Hopefully I'll get a chance to witness it but he will def be in spirit with me.
I dare anyone to watch this video and then watch Lionel Ritchie's Dancing on the Ceiling video and not shake your head in disgust. How does someone so funky in '76 get completely drained of the funk by the mid '80s? Getting paid I guess.
It is what it is. He wasnt the greatest dancer even then if you watch him lol. He always said he wasnt freed until someone around the band told him to write what he felt. Thats where the slower songs started showing up more and more. You watch shows from arou 79 until he left, he was already becoming different dude. Some of those last shows you can find online, they were more or less his back up group by then anyway. Said in an interview he was the brotha in college with a Cream lp under his arm, was told easy was too white for black radio. Had to be true to himself whichever way it took him. All that said, he did pop out like a mug lmao
i hope this video makes your day. machine gun cover in all its glory as for the band, while classified under many genres, they keep funk a live. dgXiF7Z7GU
Change of the times my man. Between 1981 and 1982, all of the deadly funky bands of the 70's went to more of that pop sound. That was the day music died, and now we have Lil Wayne, and Beyonce, and 1D, the list goes on. Sad, sad, sad. The only ones that really stayed remotely funky, was George Clinton, and James Brown.
@chakafan2 actually i read this comment from you a few days ago....im betting that what you say is true....as they described it...once berry gordy had produced all the big motown acts he looked and there the commodores were...they were basically the last of the motown acts by then and they were not as popular as e,w&f and some of the other r&b groups of the day...when i was a kid i really thought i was the only one who liked the commodores lol
I know you weren't, but i would say that all of the funk bands were as good as each other, because they all laid it down, and had kick ass shows. Also, their T-Neck recordings are really great, ESPECIALLY Winner Takes All. That one is too bad!!!
@SlickFunker I think the Commodores had a better live show than the Isley Bro.and i'm a huge Isley Bro. fan,but they never were that great live back in the day.
Fancy Dancing funk of the Commodores!! Let's vote, get them into Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2023
Yes ---def
I saw The Commodores on this tour when they came through Sacramento. "Hot On The Tracks" album had just released. They tore the roof off the place!!
YEAH BABY......now THIS is the Commodores that I remember growing up to!!!! Go ahead on and PLAY YO FUNK fella's!!!
One of the premier bands of all time. They surely had one the wickedest drummers of all time. The Commodores are living legends.
And that wicked drummer is Clyde Orange who is still with the group and shares lead vocals with JD.
Incidentally, he was the only music major in the group. The rest were either 'engineers' or business majors. And YES, Clyde was a beast!!!

We claimed them all in N Jersey/NYC and DC too.
Dayton ohio will have something to say about that and it starts with Slave
Commodores were the hottest thang on the market during this time! Sold out tours, straight up clownin on fancy dancer "live".
I'm still a die hard Commodores fan. Been to their concerts in every decade since the 70s. Their live shows are still awesome. COMMODORE COUNTRY!!
Growing Up, Walter Orange Was The Reason I Wanted To Play The Drums ..... He's Holding It All Down.
that is a fantastic reason to play drums.
AMEN!!! I don't think he's ever gotten credit that he properly deserves!!!

BRAVO LIONEL RICHIE AND THE COMMODORES, PHENOMENAL PERFORMANCE!!!
Yes, boys and girls, there once was a time when Lionel Richie was cool.
He's still cool!
😁💯
Lol once the sexy King of Funk
Just not AS Kool. : )@@Mindbodyandspirit240
When was he not cool??
It baffles me why people call Lionel Ritchie a sell out, if you you are a true fan of the commodors, you would know they were a diverse group, Country, Pop, Gospel, Funk they did it all.
Probably because it's hard to see how funky he was in this video and then go watch his solo videos like All Night Long and Dancing on the Ceiling.
Jealous...
Lame excuse!
funkordie100 nothing lame bout that bcause he was black one time
Dancing on the ceiling.. Totally lost me.
"Visions of you my love, dancing in my head..." Yeah baby, superlative funk at it's very best!!!

All the OLDIES bring back memories and theres a message in all my oldes songs AND I 💘 THEM
They killed it !!!!!!!!! Lionel vocals is across between Leroy Bonner (Ohio Players) and Ray Charles.
That's a pretty fair conclusion!
I almost forgot how good these guys were
Commadores had a very good live album. It's was a two record set that really jammed
1977 Commodore's musical extravaganza!!
That album is 🔥🔥

A lot of these none rehearsing sloppy bands need to pay attention. This is how you do it!
This is the cut that ALWAYS comes to mind FIRST whenever I think about The Commodores...NOT Brick House!!!
Love this jam but favorite is Zoom
STUNNING
All those years playing with the Jackson 5 hardened there funk chops
Lionel with da fro was as bad as he wanted to be! A real bad ass! Born to be funk 🌟 star ....
Except he left the funk for those pop/country/western crossover dollars 💵
YESSS !!!
