I don't know if this is a repost or a new video. I DO KNOW that I have received this same information from your channel previously. That said, I agree the information is DEFINITELY worth pulling back to the surface.
@@bozenakucner4043 Bread is bad because they add folic acid to it (fortify) which is a toxic form of vitamin B9. It causes the body to store fat. Fibre has no nutritional value, stop eating toxic food and you wouldn't need it to clean out the guts.
My father, a GP who retired in 1995 always said that Cholesterol was the biggest health lie of the 20th century, and that a little bit of toast under your slices of butter was acceptable. He died recently, but not before discovering that he had been proven right. Thanks, Dad - for having a fine and independent mind.
Your Father R.I.P. (I loved how he put it “a thin slice of toast acceptable under your butter”. It’s my favorite starter with a glass of good red wine. Thank you for sharing.
@@vleeism adults don't need milk or cheese ones they stop growing, all that does is cause bad cholesterol even if the cow is fed organic food, when did you ever see an adult cow drinking milk from another cow? Do you see my point, milk is only needed for growth, there is other supplements or vitamins good for the bones that contain calcium, in most cases milk and especially cheese is poison, not to mention the amount of salt cheese has etc.
My LDL, bad cholesterol, was low. My HDL, good cholesterol, was high. My overall triglycerides were below normal. My cardiologist put me on statins. Fast forward 5 years and my overall triglycerides were high, my LDL was high and my HDL, which statins target, was low. I also had a heart attack and a dual bypass surgery and my diabetes was worse ( a side effect of statins is increasing blood glucose and progressively worsening type 2 diabetes). A month ago my doctor doubled my statin prescription. Instead of taking it, I stopped it altogether. My blood glucose went from high 200’s/low 300’s to around 230 average. A week ago I started intermittent fasting and a Keto diet (not completely into it yet, only one Keto meal a day so far). My blood glucose is averaging about 130-140. I’m never going back!
Yeah right. You’re trying to tell us that your doctor put you on statins for no reason whatsoever? That’s like putting someone on chemotherapy before they even get cancer. If what you said is true, your doctor should be sued for medical malpractice.
I'm watching many videos like this to learn a litle more. My doctor also suggested statin, althoug my exams are ok. HDL 85, LDL 93; Tgl 54. But he said it's because one of my carotids is with a litle, very litle plaque. But I decided first to go on the diet i'm learnig at this channel, then repeat the carotid doppler.
As a biostatistician 30 years ago for the Drug companies I analyzed the effects of Statins on cholesterol and heart disease. It was obvious that Statins lowered cholesterol but not heart disease. Back then the Swedish government imported statins. They were disappointed with the outcome. I then decided I would not take any drugs unless it was approved by the Swedish government. I also had my blood tested (without help from my doctors) and found that my LDL was not inflamed. I am now 80 years old and take no prescription drugs. However my health insurance requires that I go to a doctor every year. Except for one good doctor that was educated in Iran, the doctors told me I was going to die if If I didn't take a Statin. On my medical records they recorded that I had various forms of insanity. One of many accusations said I was suffering from depression. LOL I had no idea that I was suffering from depression. Lately I have been happy and excited to learn from Dr. Ekberg and other medical doctors on RUclips the biology related to the measurements I analyzed. Every morning I have a cup of coffee and spend time listening to lectures on biology without having to take exams. Instead the lectures have saved my health.
I’m a registered nurse & from his simple explanation I have a better understanding of cholesterol instead of just looking at the numbers. We need more doctors like you that actually cares.
Hi Glenda. I generally feel that nurses often know more than doctors. I would like to know who sets these levels, and why do they keep changing? I expect that the drug companies themselves, have "got their fingers in this pie."
As a Cardiovascular nurse for over 40 years, this explanation and physiopathology of Cholesterol is the most clear and instructive I've ever seen, in opposition to Big Pharma and EBM pushing Statins to everyone. I wish this lecture could be seen by many people who think that high cholesterol = statin, instead of lifestyle changes on low carb nutrition and decrease inflammation, high insulin, etc. Thank you Dr. Ekberg!!
I think it’s great to see more and more ppl back up this way of eating/lifestyle. I’m someone who was scared and confused on what to do and caused even more stress! Thanks for your input from the Cardiology field!
I'm a healthy 64 yo - clean diet, lots of cardio - my LDL tested at 105 & HDL at 86 - I got a call telling me they were prescribing statins. - No discussion, no options, no other info - The more research I do, the more distrust I have of the medical profession. Good to hear that a cardio nurse is more interested in people's health than following a "text book" and a calculator. And - don't get me started on blood pressure!! It's Only high when I'm in the dr's office!
I fell into the cholesterol trap about 25 years ago, following a routine check up. I was alright for a year or so then slowly I began to suffer from violent transient head ache, like a hammer hit me. My muscles would uncontrollably twitch. I had constant short memory loss. I decided enough was enough and stopped taking the pills. My symptoms subsided within a few weeks. I haven’t taken a statin for 20’years now much to the frustration of my doctor. I am 76 and other than arthritis in my knee and wrist I am healthy.
It's very frustrating for doctors when their patients tell them that they are misinformed about cholesterol and statins and that a diet high in animal fats is actually healthy and a low fat, high carb diet is not.
Who cares if the truth frustrates a doctor? Would you rather be given bad information that makes you sick and accept it in case challenging him ‘frustrates him’.
I’m a doctor, and for me, this is how a true doctor should be. Studying and advocating true and real health to the public, not just simply giving drugs to ppl that you know is not gonna treat the root cause of patient’s diseases. Truly respect to Dr Sten Ekberg & Dr Eric Berg, true idols in medical field 🔥💯
I checked cholesterol test recently, total was 249, and LDL: 167...VLDL: 20..could you tell me whether Statin or dieting is necessary ...pls guide me as dr advised to take this medicine for a month
Is it because insurance company's profit, determines how many tests we actually need. I have heard they are $1,00 permonth on each patient is this true?
My grandma lived to 97 with high blood pressure as long as I can remember.....She loved sugar....Hated veggies and water....Ate mostly meat and potatoes and coffee for water source.... (She'd be 126 now....LOL).....Have a hunch that most longevity is genetic.....At nearly 76, am doin' just fine, thank you.....Better condition than grandma at this age..hope my luck holds out...... ;o)
I've been carnivore almost a year, keto 2.5 years before that. My doctor is amazed at my recent bloodwork, she knows my diet and lifestyle. She's particulary pleased with my cholesterol levels / ratios which are perfect. I am a 52 y/o perimenopausal woman, lost around 100 lbs and keeping it off and I feel GREAT.
Inspiring. Im tossing up going completely carnivore. Have been keyo for a couple of years but I'm finding the whole 'woman of a certain age' thing mucks me up these days. My resistance is how to deal with the folks around me 🙄 keto has been bad enough, even with glaringly obvious results people atill insist on questioning me.
Most people from the 70's went on low fat/fat free diets, low cholesterol diets etc. Then there was a huge increase in dementia, alzheimer cases. Your body produces cholesterol, your brain needs it.
I'm 68 and my doctor has strongly encouraged me to take statins. I have reviewed my recent labs and they are almost perfect. I was told by a nurse, the Dr. gets a spiff from the drug company if I get on the statin. No thanks. Excellent video. Thank you!
I live in the Czech Republic where doctors dismiss this kind of talk as new age rubbish. As a type II diabetic who has successfully taken my health into my own hands, the old fashioned, outdated belief in 'fat=bad' is very frustrating. In the Czech Republic doctors don't even measure A1c as standard protocol when treating diabetics. I have no trust in the medical community here. Thank you for your videos.
I feel the same about the medical field here in the U.S! Very few Dr. are open minded when it comes to their patients taking their health into their own hands. Keto bad, Diabetic diet good! Unfortunately Drs get very LITTLE training on nutrition in med school! It the same old, same old. I will say my NP is pretty good about listing to what I have to say and I really like her, but we still disagree when it comes to cholesterol meds. Fingers crossed Drs will start coming around to the new way of healthier eating when they see their patients getting healthier and admit its because of their diet done their way and not with the old standard diet!
@@bernadetteholmes6160 In any other field if you want to be successful you have to stay on top of the latest trends, research and developments. It seems only to be in the field of medicine that professionals have no interest in acquiring new information. It's as if doctors are not reading contemporary medical journals. A terrifying thought, actually! Instead they approach any new findings that challenge their current knowledge and belief system with scepticism and truly dislike when patients question their advice and methodologies. Gone are the days when what your doctor said was the word of god. And they seem to have a hard time handling that.
Great video! My father was 42 when he died suddenly of an MI. I'm 66, and in exceptional shape, but I discovered a few years that I have heart disease myself. I asked my GP to order a calcium scan. Results: score=1261- a lot of plaque. So, I have been researching atherosclerosis root causes intensively for 2+ years, and this is one of the best, most comprehensive explanations regarding the atherosclerotic process I've seen yet. The medical establishment is in bed with the pharmaceutical firms, and the flood industry is poisoning us!! Take heed! Take up arms!!
Yup. Everyone should now how corrupt our institutions are, and one of the best examples is the health care industry and bureaucracy. Remember - these are the people who preached the food pyramid up until about 20 years ago. It's almost unbelievable.
My father died at 45 from an MI and his death emotionally scared me to this day. I am 51 and have suffered with PVC's/PAC's since my mid 30s and continually worry about heart disease. I go to the doctor regularly, dont drink, dont do drugs, never smoked, but stress and diet could be better. I am trying to cut out sugars and am hoping that I will be ok moving forward. It isnt easy... I have a sedentary job and dont get any exercise.
@@glickmpb Ask your GP/cardiologist to order a calcium scan. It can tip you off to atherosclerotic disease progression. I had to beat mine up to get the order, but discovered a lot of plaque in my coronary tree
Gosh that is a high calcium score. My doctors last year tried to scare me with a 237 number and I was 61. That was in normal range for a person my age and I have a cholesterol count, that is so high, they said I should be dead. 490 total with a 55 HDL score
Sir your videos are so good that even someone with zero medical knowledge can grasp what you’re talking about. Amazing job! And you didn’t even try to sell me anything WOW!! The world need more doctors like you!
Dr. Ekberg should be nominated for the Nobel Prize for Medicine. His integrity and quest for the real truth in real health understanding is virtually unique.
The phenomenal information he imparts is gold. The time and effort he puts in to breaking it all down to easy and clear understanding by the average person is Priceless!!!
I just got my results form my doctor and they were high in the traditional sense. I refused a statin, I can and will make the necessary changes. I lowered my A1c with diet alone I can do the rest.
me too. I did OMAD with KETO all last year. I raised HDL, lowered Trglycerides, and lowered A1C. My LDL went up and my doctor tried to put me back on statins which I stopped taking. My heart pain has stopped and I lost 45lbs in weight. I am healthier all round. And my main target is A1C which dropped from 44-37. (40) being the recommended max.
@@chazwyman8951 well you did not clarify nor mentioned if that is a negative or positive simply making such statement without a follow up it was confusing , did it go up after you did those diets or was that past tense and the reason why you did the diets?
I ate cream, butter and eggs for 6 months. No sugar, few basic carbs... My triglycerides went from 400 to 150. I was on a vegan diet when they were around 400.
@@jennymaldonado5472 I get regularly checked every three months. My doctor told me either to change my sedantary life style and start a diet with no fats basically OR I should start statins... I researched a lot and applied almost the opposite diet. I can't believe it either. Remove fruits, sugar and bread. Add eggs and vinegar. Works like a charm for tg s
A friend doctor (retired now as he is over 80) told me that back in 70's the normal grade of cholesterol was between 250-300. Suddenly one day in clinic informed them that the normal grade from then on it would be 200 and that they should give statins and medicines to people. The result was 30% increase in prescriptions. Moderate exercise outside (to increase HDL and vitamin D levels), Mediterranean diet and fasting (with minimum pasta, rise, white breads, sweets etc) and minimum stress (meditation, healthy social life, psychotherapy) are the real medicines for me.
Thank U ...IL take Ur advise...today I stopped my statins and decided to eat whole- natural foods...so pls help us LORD to get our normal cholesterol with OUT the risk of statins
As someone who is obese, has high cholesterol and start IF with no sugar and all bad consumptions, I'm so grateful I found this video😂 Wanna be healthy? The one and only thing that will help is to take good care of your body and actually learn about it.
Thank You @remoschlauri5823 so much for showing your appreciation and supporting the channel, and for helping me get the message of health out to the world. 🙏 🏆 😄
Nailed it. Our Doctor flipped out over my wife’s “high” LDL yet her Triglycerides were 42, her HDL was 93 and her VLDL 17. He Pooh poohed us getting a CAC test done and I predicted she’d be zeros across the board. Came out 0,0,0, & 2. The nurse couldn’t believe how good it was yet in the same breath said, “but what are we going to do about your high cholesterol?” Brutal....
Thank you kjmalone17. “but what are we going to do about your high cholesterol?” How about celebrate it along with your overall good state of health. I've watched many YT videos on cholesterol...some are very complicated and WAY too technical...others are vague. This is probably THE best and most straightforward explanation of them all. Dr Sten, you are a fabulous teacher! Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos!
Thank you for this one Sten! I was put on statins by my doctor after showing high LDLs and HDLs etc - mainly because of my fasting and keto diet. But side effects and studying modern research, has convinced me to stop taking those statins and instead just enjoy my better health status overall.
Cholesterol is a lipid that our body produces it's not the enemy it occurs in nature same with salt being a mineral 2 essential things our body needs to be optimal while process sugar does not occur in nature and behaves similar to chemicals, it's always been the sugar intake that destroys our bodies and leads to many diseases.
I agree ☝️!! Fantastic presentation, easy to understand, perfect 👌 tone of voice, speed! Tons of valuable information!👍👍👍Very motivating, encouraging!👌🙏
There is one more thing people need to learn: to heal their mind too. We need to realize that the world is overpopulated and it is the #1 cause of all the global problems. Healing the body is only one aspect of fulfilling live, the mind needs a huge reformation too.
Dr. Ekberg, I want to sincerely thank you for the work you are doing. In this case specifically, I'm grateful for this video about cholesterol. I'm also grateful to my primary physician who doesn't jump to pharmaceutical solutions at the drop of a hat. My overall and LDL levels are REALLY high. I don't want to share my personal numbers, but suffice to say they FAR exceed the minimum thresholds at which statins are prescribed. However, my doctor ordered a "cardiac calcium score" CAT/PET scan, the results of which were ZERO. That's right. Zero accumulation in my arteries, zero "clogging" by all that terrible nasty LDL. While I was waiting for that scan to happen, I was comforted by what you presented in this video and truly felt it applied to me. I was right! I am on a crusade to tell everyone I know personally, "If your doctor thinks your cholesterol is too high and wants to give you statins, #1, watch this video by Dr. Ekberg, and #2, get a cardiac calcium score scan first!"
Remember that even if the doc prescribes something to you, nobody can force you to take them :) That's what I did with serotonine blockers. After I read the list of side-effects which included chronic impotence and suicide tendency, I realised I wasn't that ancious after all 😅
Same. High cholesterol runs in my family. I asked my doctor if I should keep doing keto, and since he saw the weight loss success I'd haf, he suggested I have a calcium scoring CT scan, and proceed based on that. My score was zero, so I am still doing keto.
Well guess what?? I am 59 years old and very fit, I water Ski, snow ski, roller blade, ice skate ,cross country ski, mountain biking, free climbing, hunt camp and fish... eat a dozen of eggs a week along with 5lbs of New Zealand steaks and ground venison.( Silver Fern Farms). lots of water, bier, coffee... no sugar or salt and no processed foods... my doctor of 17 years is mad at me for doing the opposite. "she asked, what did you do to bring all those bad numbers down"? "I told her, turn the food pyramid upside down" and you're healthy". she entered the info into her portable clipboard, and walked out. I was baffled.
You're right. The top part of the FDA's food pyramid should be on the bottom and the bottom of that pyramid should be at the top. I read that about 10-15 years ago. Dr. Atkins could be right all along and maybe that was why Big Pharma and the AMA were mad at him. It is a multi-billion dollar industry.
@bh-hl9pn The cholesterol in the eggs have a neutral effect on the blood. I eat 3 or 4 eggs a couple of times a week and eat organic meat and other foods whenever possible. I have a sit-down job, bowl twice a week and walk about a mile or two at least 3 times a week.
I got out my NMR lipid profile during this video. I feel so much better. My total cholesterol is 307, LDL 220, HDL 77, VLDL 10, TG 67. My LP-IR is< 25. I have very fluffy LDL. I'm just going to keep eating fat and meat with a few vegetables, and occasional fruit thrown in because I am pretty insulin sensitive. BTW. I"m 63. Thank you Dr Ekberg for all that you do.
@@lianjohnston461 I respectfully disagree. I don't believe the hype of LDL causing atherosclerosis. True, it may be a player in the process, but the true cause is inflammation. Without inflammation, there isn't atherosclerosis. My CAC score is zero. No calcium/atherosclerosis, and I have had high LDL for many years. Treating a lab number is never a good idea. Much better to look for the true cause and fix it. IMHO
I had a VA doctor demand of me, "You must take statins!" I tried to explain that the ratio is more important than total numbers. He tried to tell me several times to take statins. He's trapped in another age & is incapable of changing.
Same with my doc at the VA. They can only do what their computer screen tells them... ie: Standard of Care. Everytime she puts me on new medication it causes more problems. The statin was causing me to have mouth sores which stopped after I discontinued them. I finally got my vitD3 level in the normal range and she tells me I'm taking too much... smh.
@@phiksit I read the book "The Big Fat Surprise" several years ago & it changed my outlook on food research & what is NOT good for you. ‘MY CHOLESTEROL’ IS 15.2, triglycerides 1, hba1c 27, blood pressure 90/60, I’m a carrier of thallasemia trait and I can write a book about cholesterol. This is briefly my story. I’m 51 years old and I’m told I look 30 years younger. No refined carbs, no processed food, no refined sugar, no legumes, no pulses, no grains or oats, no supplements ie vitamins or shakes, no smoothies or other soft drinks or sodas, no fried foods only steamed or grilled, veg above the ground, only 4 types of fish, specific nuts, lots of green leafy salads, never drunk alcohol in my whole life or smoked or did any kind of drugs. I hardly drink water and I sleep no more than 6 hrs not because I can’t but because I’m always busy. I work 5 days a week more than 10 hrs and on my feet. I go to gym after work for at least 4 hrs a day with weekends more than 5 hrs. I eat 2-3 eggs a day, chicken and red meat but the last not as often but have recently changed it to grass fed as it was difficult to get. I eat 1-2 lemons a day, minimum of half avocado, natural greek yogurt and kefir, specific plain nuts, 10 different seeds in my food, olives, olive oil with AVC. 25 herbs and spices combined in my food. Chocolate 100%. 12 weeks ago I’ve done the biggest step. I stopped fruits the way we understand fruits but not tomatoes, cucumbers and some others as they are fruits. I should have done it at the start. A big regret. My only fruits are tomatoes, cucumbers, avocados, aubergine, & red bell peppers. I’m exercising minimum of 25 hrs a week. I’m self made. I’m pure. I’m clean. I’m told I’m a powerhouse, machine, nutter, lunatic, Duracell bunny, and many more. I’ve been chased to write a book and to go on social media such as instagram and alike. I’ve decided to go in few weeks time. I believe the way I look and what I have achieved in 18 months is extremely hard for someone else to have achieved. Before August 2021 I had not stepped in a gym for 25 years. When I say my age people are in disbelief. No plastic surgery, no Botox, no hair extensions, no eyelashes and no lip fillers. Yes I’m a female. I’ll only launch instagram with only photos of myself at the gym. I’ll let the photos talk without any editing. My cholesterol kept rising since I started eating all above managed to drop it off to 8.4 (used to be 10.4 and 5 days ago when I was tested at 15.2) not because I got scared but because of another experiment of mine. One thing I’ve learned during my journey. Doctors like one word which is called ‘GENETICS’. I like it too. I just say that I was born like this. It’s in my genes. I haven’t been sick in years and have not taken even a paracetamol. I just say it’s ‘GENETICS’ I also say to others don’t bother with trying to lose weight it’s `GENETICS’ and we all have a good laugh at the gym. I wake up every morning and I’m the happiest person in the world. I wish everyone felt the way I feel every single day. I can conquer the world. Put me on a pedestal and l’ll prove lots of experts wrong. The doctors at my surgery refused to see me. It took a year to be seen. GP suggested statins from the start, I refused. I asked for IDL test nowhere to be found went privately to see a cardiologist he did an ecg, took blood pressure and he said, ‘you’re young, fit, no family history of cardiovascular problems or high cholesterol, you don’t smoke or drink your lifestyle is very good no statins for you however for me to sleep well at night I’ll give you calcium score and angiogram.’ I’ve been fighting for it for over a year. He blamed my ‘high cholesterol’ which at the time was 8.4 on ‘GENETICS’ I kept my mouth shut. I just wanted to say ‘if I had walked into this room and I was fat by the way I’m 41 kg, smoked, drunk, didn’t exercise and my diet was bad you would have told me I can benefit from eating healthier loose some weight stop drinking and smoking and exercise but I walked in with my gym gear and I’m ripped and you say to me it’s ‘GENETICS’?’ Please please. I kept my mouth shut as I walked out with what I’ve been fighting for. From that moment I just say ‘it’s genetics don’t bother.’ Two months after seeing the cardiologist still waiting for appointment to do the calcium score and the angiogram. My gp is in panic mode at the moment after my latest results. Will speak to me via phone on Thursday. May get my calcium score and angiogram very soon. She said ‘I can’t change your diet as perfect. Carry on.’ Anything that the doctors can’t explain the word ‘GENETICS’ is the only way out and when you ask for solid data there’re nowhere to be seen. I forgot to say that my aim was not to loose weight as I was within my range but to change my cells. Mitochondria was my main aim. I believe I’ve achieved it. I’m in control of my mind. I rule it. I do not let it rule me. I’m the master of a person who is mentally a monster. I trained my mind to have all the food temptations around me and not to tough them. My main aim is to change the government’s dietary guidelines. I can prove it because for the last 2 years my body has become a guinea pig. I have solid data. I challenge any expert out there to examine me. Once I’m seen online people will believe me as I understand the skepticism behind people on social media. They’ll be in disbelief as per those that know what I’ve done and I’m doing. No one has ever done what I’ve done in a developed country for such a long time. To finish this I met a doctor at gym who I get on very well and every time I see him I say ‘GENETICS’. We laugh. He once told me that I put my body under a lot of stress. He knows few things about my lifestyle but he doesn’t know about my latest cholesterol result. I’ll just say, ‘GENETICS!’!! Oh did I say that I had a US abdominal and came back normal?
20 years ago, I was 'diagnosed' with Very high cholesterol, which seemed weird for a slim, athletic so I was told I going to suffer with heart disease, no life insurance etc. Clearly I freaked, and did what they said, for awhile at least. After different statins, different values, different diets...I really struggled to still get it any where down to near 'normal' and didn't like being on drugs forever. Like you said, my body is doing something to want this much...so I said no more and let's see how it goes in the future. Pragmatically, I thought if it is really, really that bad, it must start to be collecting in my arteries etc so lets do a CT Angiogram and actually look. we wait another Five years after that, we looked and measured, and found absolutely no sign of heart disease. I had a CT Calcium scoring test (cheaper) and again...NOTHING. This means after 20 known years of bad cholesterol, I still show no signs so of CVD. People thought I was crazy to do, but I'm an evidence based guy and nothing better than testing like this, over such a long. Many thx for the info
Good for you... your story supports what I already knew and what Eckberg is stating here. Dr. Morely Robin's video: Mis Led Mis Fed (youtube) also states clearly "dietary cholesterol has nothing to do with blood cholesterol'... that's worth knowing.
How old were you when you were diagnosed with high cholesterol? Mine is very high for already long time too but they didn’t prescribe medication for that , I don’t know why. I am on low carb diet, maybe need to go vegetarian… panic
@@ZhannaKemp hi, 35ys. Had to have life insurance pre check so that's when the discovered it. I took the statins and barely qualified which was stressful no insurance meant no mortgage. I just wanted to drop 6kg..taking me from 86.6kg to 80.6kg and it was awesome. I thought I'd get cholesterol test before and after... and it did go down a little bit, yet so little it would not really change anything. To me seems to indicate that diet doesn't really affect it. Thank you Father Elijahcal. Maybe they need to change it to " First do not intentionally do harm", or "First make sure you only learn mainstream information that is lagging by a couple of generations, so you can keep doing what you are doing and not intentionally do harm". I'm being kind of harsh here, but it is so frustrating. 😕
Every time I took Statins I got severe muscle pains and even pinched nerves. I stopped taking them after I had a massive heart attack that put me in a coma for 4 days. I talked to my sister because her cholesterol also went up a few years ago after changing her diet and losing weight and she said her doctor told her he was not really worried about it as long as her triglycerides were within normal range :) He also told her that it was not necessary to put her on medication... Now, this doc is not here in the US, though .. doctors in other countries have a different mindset 😇 Just like Dr. Ekberg does.
My physical; down 27 lbs, BP 118/72, cholesterol 276. I politely rejected the statin rec. I bike 150 miles a week and feel great. Thank u dr sten . Great video.
Your channel is an awesome resource for learning about all about how insulin resistance works, the causes of heart disease, cancer, dementia etc. You should have been around 40 years ago when I was at university! I guess you have taught me that if you are metabolically healthy you will be much less likely to suffer these afflictions. I had my hip replaced in Oct 2021 and came out of hospital 88.7kg ( I'm 1.68m). After I found your channel (a long with Dr Jason Fung, Dr Paul Mason & Dr Ken Berry), I decided to get metabolically healthy after struggling to control my weight most of my life despite very regular exercise lifestyle. I decided to follow an intermittent fasting lifestyle. Recording my weight everyday, I managed to get down to get down to around 72kg's by Dec 2022. My new years resolution was to get down to 69kg. After watching your videos on keto, carnivore, low carb etc I decided to add keto to my intermittent fasting.... ketovore more or less. I got down to 68kg in the first week of Jan 2023, got my bloods done and was amazed. They came out pretty much as you would predict. Total cholestrol = 6.0mmol/L (232mg/dL), HDL = 1.96mmol/L (76mg/ dL) LDL =3.7mmol /L (143mg /dL) Triglycerides =0.8mmol/ L (71mg /dL) Total cholestrol/ HDL = 3.1 TG/HDL = 0.4 A1C = 39mmol/L (5.7) BP= 120/75. You certainly have a gift for explaining complex stuff and making very understandable! Thank you so much for all the knowledge you have shared and for changing my lifestyle and for being such a large part of why I have finally achieved my metabolic health goals. 👍👍👍
And again, THANK YOU Doctor Ekberg! My GP had glven me a panic attack when she screamed, "you're going to DIE of a heart attack!" after seeing my cholesterol test - and INSISTED that I see a specialist who wanted to put me on statins. Your priceless info has finally set my mind at ease because it allowed me to figure out that my risk of dying is actually not higher than average. Your channel is one of, if not *the*, absolute BEST here on youtube.
Thank you Craig Jenson. I really appreciate your feedback and so glad you liked it. The greatest compliment you can give is to help me help more people by sharing the videos. 😄
Doctor, I am 64 and had a stroke in January. Woke up and my right arm went totally limp. My total cholesterol was around 269. Doctors said I had a few tiny pieces of plaque break off and made it to the left side of my brain. Up to that point I had been strength training and was very active. It was a shock to me. I spent one night in the hospital and was put on a statin drug to reduce my cholesterol. Two weeks later I returned to the gym and within six weeks was back to lifting and training at my normal levels. I am concerned about getting off the drug due to this experience. I have changed my diet to attempt to eliminate sugar and fried foods from my diet. Trying to cut back on bread also and have gone more to an organic diet. I had my cholesterol retested in April and it did drop significantly and all ratios are in acceptable levels. I really like what you are saying and am considering stopping the statin and going more on my own with my diet and regiment. Oh, I am 6 foot and 180 pounds and have never been overweight, never smoked tobacco and don’t drink alcoholic beverages. What are your thoughts? Thanks so much!
Believe it or not but alcohol actually helps prevent strokes . Alcoholic drinks like wine help clean your arteries . Of course, too much of anything is bad for you.
This is probably the most informative video on cholesterol and impact of stains. Unfortunately medical professionals are ignorant of this level of detail and continue to prescribe statins by looking at total cholesterol and LDL. I have been a victim for 30 years till I became more learned on the subject. Doctor Ekberg is awesome in his knowledge and his videos share so much relevant information. Thank you doc for your contributions.
I just had coronary artery blockage and I am 37, very active been doing MMA for past 15 years, acute cardiologist doctor is putting me on Staten, also Stent has been put in my heart. Idk what do do now, should I take the Staten or should I not, what do you think? Thanks..
Medical professionals simply follow rules - very few are creative thinkers. As alluded to in the video if they don't indeed follow the directives issued they are open to being sued. for not following normative rules. The drugs companies are the prime culprits trying to create false markets for their drugs.
I just came home from a visit to my doctor with numbers that inspire him to put me on a statin (like other members of my family). He was still talking about a low fat diet which I will not do. I know that I have some modifications to make, but he was willing to order the NMR test. In 6 months we'll see where I am. Based on the video, I'm actually in really good shape. Thank you Dr. Ekberg for telling the truth behind the numbers.
Wow....i just had my check up n the doctor said my cholesterol is high n had increased my statins cos i hv heart disease. I am grateful that i am still here...enjoying life to the fullest n not think abt my health problems too much....one day at a time.. Thk you for educating me ...love the way you explained...
This was the best video I have seen on this topic. Plain English!! I just got blood work done and got my results yesterday. My LDL was 159 and the doc wants to talk about statins. My VLDL is 14 and my LDL/HDL ratio is 3.4. I told the doc I would never consider a statin.
Excellent statement at the end. When I told my doctor, in January, that I had stopped taking his metformin, he flipped out, and especially when I mentioned coconut oil. I thought he would have a heart attack. Yes, he went through his spiel about how it will clog my arteries and cause me to have a heart attack. I had been off my metformin for 3 months when I told him. So, he requested a cholesterol test. I did it at the same time as my last a1c, in April. He was an entirely different doctor at that appointment. The first thing he said, was to congratulate me for doing something that he had not seen many of his patients do. My a1c was 5.8. He said my cholesterol level was slightly high. He didn't give me the numbers. He did say that they were of no concern, but did request another cholesterol test for my next a1c test. My cholesterol won't be worse, it will be better, just like the example in the video. I follow the same diets that are told here and a couple of other doctors that promote the keto diet.
This is, I don't know to express it correctly but the most informative video I have ever watched about cholesterol. I have struggled for the past 2 years (when at age 21 I was diagnosed with high cholesterol) to understand the reason why my cholesterol is so high. I now realize it is something to with my own diet (not in a good way haha), but I would recommend anyone looking for answers to watch this video.
This is one of the best explanations I ever watched about cholesterol. My family has always eaten healthy. We are conscious about sugar, Whole Foods, fruits and vegetables consumption and we still have high cholesterol. My mother has been on statins meds for the past five years, it has made her sick, she is extremely active, she can s 74 and still works, she is so frustrated and sad. I decided I will not take statins.
This is why "Profit" needs to be separated from "Healthcare". Imagine how many diseases could be cured and conditions quickly addressed if there was no profit for anyone? Healthcare in many regards is like the Military Supply System. Just get at no care for cost and never ask why something is so expensive. Then hold the Hospitals and Clinics hostage to the obscene cost of equipment and supplies. Of course? Hospitals adopt the same ridiculous attitudes they learned from the suppliers. Chrome, Marble, Massive Glass walls... Expensive waiting room furniture... Constant remodeling... Why? So they can win Awards... Just saying... When I don't feel right>? I could care less about the environment I am being treated in.
Big pharma practically owns the medical systems all around the globe. Might wanna look up "rockfeller medicine men" and see how the medical, financial, historical and many other fundamential fields were practically bought for short change in the past. You wont read in the history books. Those same books often fallate these globalists as big entrepreneurs and philanthropists. The conflict of interest is immeasurable.
@@curiouscat3384 Yes, it does... I was chatting with my Dr about stuff. My provider made it mandatory that if there is a generic form available? That is what is to be prescribed. They also made a rule in all their Clinics and Hospitals that blocked the Pharma Reps from coming in and handing out samples or meeting with employees. To get around that? the pharma reps started to make appointments with the Drs. Wasting their time and pitching their products as "Patients".
@@johnwilliams8818 Oh interesting, I was just going to add the Sales Reps to my comment because historically I've observed that they're typically cute young women fresh out of college who play golf and take the docs out to lunch and make 6 figures. I didn't know about the making appts trick

Doctor Ekberg, you are a Health Angel!!!! Thank you so much!!! I live in Russia and I was constantly literally attacked in an aggressive way throughout a decade by my medical doctors who INSISTED on me taking those statins and threatened me with death, but I felt it was wrong, I felt fine and now I am so happy that I trusted my body and my intuition!!! I didn't take the drugs!! And I am absolutely happy to hear your deep competent comprehensive explanation about the subject!!! I wish you all possible well-being which you only wish!!!
62 years old. 5’11” 149lbs, regular gym goer for 35 years and I’m currently doing 2 boot camps a week (training with heart rate in the 140-160 range for nearly an hour) and 4 gym visits. My total cholesterol is 251, LDL is 158 (it’s been around that or slightly more for 20 years). My Triglycerides are always negligible. My new doctor wanted me on statins. I agreed to a stress test (which was laughable if was supposed to be stressing anything) and a CAC Scan which came back at zero. I told my doctor that I didn’t want to have another discussion on statins.
I am a masters prepared RN and did not learn this in pathophysiology; just the opposite. Thank you Dr. Ekberg for educating us! I am a daily watcher of your videos and appreciate your candor with providing clear/concise health information. Take care of yourself and God bless!
You didn't learn this because you studied medicine. Dr. Ekberg is not a doctor of medicine and has completely misrepresented the medical evidence on this topic lol
Lets call this "Cholesterol 101 for Dummies". Information almost had me in tears. What I thought I knew was confirmed, statins were killing me. Thank you doctor for taking the time to educate us.
I absolutely think this is the best video ever! Thanks you so much for this! As a pharmacist and as an almost 50 year old it just breaks my heart what we are doing to people!!
I took statins for 3 days and suffered the most excruciating muscle cramps at night. I actually was afraid to go to bed at night . My diet is a healthy one and never understood why my cholesterol was high . One doctor actually dropped me as a patient , because I refused to continue the statins. My diet is very low carb and no sugar intake .
Thank you for sharing. I am on statins myself and following Dr. Eckberg's Videos. I stopped eating carbs for the last 7 weeks. I feel great and I now am considering stopping the statins.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER . i have been working out for over 2years and not getting the required results till i started listening to all you have been teaching and i just turned insulin sensitive . thanks dr sten ekberg people see me and they ask what diet are you on and all i say is low carb high fat and keto ,then omad and 2mad ,then intermittent fasting. THANKS ONE AGAIN
So why they don't resolve that problem? We are in year 2023 for God sake? Why we still arguing about LDL Cholesterol? Who is profiting from all this confusion?
Cardiologists aren't arguing about it. People online who want to sell you courses are the ones putting out stuff like this. Peer reviewed science exists for a reason.
Thank you for all the great info in your videos. By acting on the advice seen in your videos along with those of Dr Jason Fung and others I have taken up fasting and a low carb/ high fat diet to treat my diabetes, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and high cholesterol. As a result of my improved lifestyle choices my fasting glucose levels are routinely between 70-80. All my doctor is concerned with is my total cholesterol and my high LDL in particular but when I asked to have an NMR done so I could check my insulin resistance and my small LDL-P, etc I was told she didn't do that and I would have to see a cardiac doctor. I got an NMR done which showed 282 total cholesterol, 91 triglycerides, 51 HDL, 15 VLDL,
Tens of thousands of Americans are saved each year thanks to Statins. Of course you're better off making lifestyle changes, but if you can't then you're better off on Statins. This doctor is giving dangerous advice.
@@robinpetersson3081 So sorry, but I can't agree. My Mother and grandfather were hospitalized because of statins. I've seen the horrible effects 1st hand. Everyone I know (no exaggeration) who has been put on those meds have adverse reactions.
@@daintytreasures Anecdotal evidence doesn't hold up in court. There are numerous studies that supports my point that Statins save lives. A study named "Lipid lowering and mortality and cardiovascular outcomes,” was published in the April 3, 2018, issue of JAMA. If your parents were hospitalized for taking Statins they were probably very unhealthy and on a very high dose to save their lives. If patients can't make life changing changes to their lives, disease will take them.

The reason doctors like this have a lot of fans is that they tell you what you want to hear. Go ahead, eat bacon, eat steak. Of course people flock to this. They don't want to change in the first place. But don't mistake it for good health advice. Sure sells books and supplements though.
You took me from an intuitive grasp of cholesterol, to a much more technical grasp. AWESOME. Be my doctor! I come from the LDL/HDL ratio era, and your video kinda explains why this words - even though not all LDL is bad, the Bad cholesterol is LDL. Your explanation about how a statin works is just goodness on top of awesomeness. Thank you!

From Germany here. I had the same thing happend. I felt so much better doing keto/carnivore. Had my blood checked and and my ldl cholesterol was so high that my doctor looked at me like Im going to die soon. And I also freaked out because SHE WAS A DOCTOR and I thought that must mean something. But my inflamation lvl was so low and everything else was fine.
Thank you DUST. "that must mean something" It means she is highly intelligent and capable and she has been indoctrinated into a system of inflexible thinking and dogma where the goal is to treat signs and symptoms. It will change in another couple of generations😄
@Eamon Cohen thank you for your worry. :) I use mostly oliveoil, coconutoil or butter. I also grill my meat very short. I like it raw inside. :) I also eat a lot of greens to my meat like avocado, sparagos, brocolia etc.
Dr. Ekberg, really appreciate your channel. Your simple way of explanation is so great that most people will understand the science behind it. I am a medical doctor with postgraduate qualifications in human nutrition.

I needed this, cause last week my Dr. said I have 275 cholesterol, but the good one, she even asked me if I am an athletic person and I didn't understand, why is she asking me that if the numbers are so high? well now I know, I've changed my lifestyle five months ago and now my doctor calls me athletic, you don't know how satisfactory that is. A few days ago I had a doctor's appointment to discuss my annual physical blood work results - my cholesterol was high. Though I tried to clarify how important my diet and lifestyle was to me, my doctor made it clear she would not discuss anything other than getting that cholesterol number down. If you like keto do it( keto only means you are in ketosis, nothing else),but do it in a right way. Mostly unsaturated fats, lean meats, lean poultry, fatty fish and seafood(the animal food part of keto). Whether you like it or not high consumption of saturated fat causes heart disease over time. Your lectures are a real treasure. Many many thanks for explaining what really is going on, how the mechanisms work. I and all of my family members (half of them working in the medical field) never were unaware of a healthy lifestyle and eating just garbage food, but eating organic potatoes, apples and carrots, and whole grain bread and rice and not too much french fries and candy is by far just not enough, and even leads you in a wrong direction. In Ancient Greece doctors were paid for as long as the patient was healthy. Whereas when he or she became ill, the physician would receive no money during this time. - Maybe our modern health care systems should have a bit more of that logic. 🙂
The US does not have a health care system. It has a sick care system. There is little or nothing done to maintain or improve health, only to treat sickness. If health and preventative systems were emphasized, there would be fewer sick people and overall treatment cost would go down. The insurance companies should adopt a "spend a dime to save a dollar" approach. They would make even more money, if that is possible.
In Europe there’s also a lot of garbage going on, but I think the US (i.e. its corporations)is more blatant. Pharmaceuticals in the US face a lower jurisdictional threshold to be approved than in Europe. In the US they can be sold for as long as they‘re proven detrimental or hazardous. Whereas in Europe it’s the other was around. It’s required that they are bulletproof before they get to the market. However there are also shenanigans and bribery happening in Europe. The best is to watch and learn from health channels like from Dr Ekberg, Dr Robert Lustig, Dr Eric Berg (among others) and keep physically and mentally intact so that you don’t need to recur to the official health care system, wherever it may be. Not getting sick by eating the good and avoiding the bad is where all health care begins. Cheers from Neukölln

Thank you Scott Cohen. Unfortunately, what you are describing is pretty much the norm in most places. Change is very slow and reluctant.😕
Exactly the same applies in South Africa. They want everybody on statins!
Thank you so much Dr. Stenberg. I wish I could let see my doctor your story. But she refuses...
@@bernadetteholmes6160 In any other field if you want to be successful you have to stay on top of the latest trends, research and developments.

@@ZhannaKemp hi, 35ys. Had to have life insurance pre check so that's when the discovered it. I took the statins and barely qualified which was stressful no insurance meant no mortgage. I'm 57 now, and still very active. Recently did intermittent fasting for 6 weeks to lose some weight. It worked very well for me. I just wanted to drop 6kg..taking me from 86.6kg to 80.6kg and it was awesome. I thought I'd get cholesterol test before and after... and it did go down a little bit, yet so little it would not really change anything. To me seems to indicate that diet doesn't really affect it. No harm in trying
You did good, very wise😉👍
Doctors who prescribe Statins to their patients are violating their hippocratic oath of "do no harm".

The doctors mean well but they are being trained to sell chemicals. I discovered this channel and have learned how to evaluate food. My doctors can't believe how much better my health is. I also lost 25 pounds in 3 months and I feel great.
Thank You Doctor Ekberg for showing us how to protect ourselves.
Wow I agree somethings 😕 not right.
It’s time for our medical professionals to sit down and get this thing right! There are so many opinions about blood sugar, cholesterol that patients are confused and left helpless.

Dr Ekberg, thank you so much for this. My husband reached a healthy BMI by going low carb and IF since February of this year. Today we got his cholesterol result and it went up. My husband was so discouraged, until we watched this. Thank you so much for this explanation. You bring us so much comfort through this video, thank you for equipping us.
Can I ask what your diet was like prior to the stroke. Did you eat alot of carbs, eg; toast, pasta, processed foods etc?
Believe it or not but alcohol actually helps prevent strokes . Alcoholic drinks like wine help clean your arteries . Of course, too much of anything is bad for you.
This is probably the most informative video on cholesterol and impact of stains. Unfortunately medical professionals are ignorant of this level of detail and continue to prescribe statins by looking at total cholesterol and LDL. I have been a victim for 30 years till I became more learned on the subject. Doctor Ekberg is awesome in his knowledge and his videos share so much relevant information. Thank you doc for your contributions.

The "Standard of Care" these days is heavily influenced by big pharma who finance continuing education for the AMA.

Dr. Ekberg, I live in Argentina, I have done a lot of research on many popularizers on topics related to health, it is clearly seen the great unknown that is knowing which foods make us sick, obviously there are powerful vested interests to prevent reaching correct conclusions, however I consider the information provided by you is of the best and deepest clarity, truly of excellence, in addition and above all things to highlight your undoubted human quality, since this knowledge contributes to improving our quality of life, truly a huge thank you to you. !!!
Thanks much Doc. Most of your video presentations are big paradigm shifts to me. I am almost 59Y. I am 1.62M and was 74.5 Kg until six months ago. I happened to watch your first video on Insulin Resistance followed by others and started practicing the essence of your videos...and....now I am 67.5Kg and I feel better. I started searching for my old cloths as the new ones do not fit me any more. The only bad habit I have is that I drink alcohol every evening and smoke occasionally. I am trying reduce it and eventually stopping. Thanks much once more Doc.
