I was at Nellis for the first 31Sqn Green Flag Ex after we formed at Bruggen with Tornados. I was in the Ops when over the radio came "Jesus the Brits just flew under us in battle formation" It turned out one of the US squadrons was flying their mission at low leval. When I asked how low they were I was told they were down to 2000 ft! When I was asked how low our boys were I told them 100ft hands off if they were chicken or 50ft if they had a couple of sorties under their belt. The TFR control unit used to have a setting to dial down to 100ft but some nosey aircrew had discovered another notch that wasn't labelled for 50ft. Rumour was BAE had designed the system for 50ft but the Air Force has asked for 100 and didn't want to pay any extra. As it had already been designed BAE just missed off labeling the CU.

I was stationed at Nellis from '76-79 and got to see them fly, crazy pilots! Very fun to watch them come in low level and have a Vulcan fly with them at low altitude was impressive

I feel so sorry for the aircrew who were on the last wave and only got to the bar by 7 in the evening. As ground crew we regularly worked very late to get aircraft serviceable for the next day on Red Flag. However, Vegas is a 24 hour town, so we all had a good time on those detachments 😀

The timings over target always amaze me, plus or minus 5 seconds, that must be alot of pressure on the pilot and nav ensuring TOT is spot on with potential enemy engagements en-route to the target or any malfunctions that may happen,,,, you never really think of those things to the untrained or the unfamiliarized,,, crazy stuff, but amazing still.

The Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington near York if I'm not mistaken. Really well worth a visit. Very enlightening interview and thanks for all the work involved in bringing this to us. I remember watching open mouthed the famous Red Flag clip of film of the Buccaneers hopping over terrain as the American Air Base defence teams failed to get a lock. Slightly panicked voices from memory!

I had colleague in USAF who was a B-52 pilot. He liked to tell story of when they were at Red Flag flying BUFF at about 150 feet over desert a Buccaneer flew under them from about the 7-o’clock to 1-o’clock position.
