Some people are suited to collective society, some people are suited to individualist society. However, most Japanese who appear on these western podcasts are westernized so they tend to dislike Japanese collectivism.

I mean, my wife is Japanese, and is kind of like this girl when we met. Recently, we decided that it was better for her to take our kids back to Japan (from the USA) to avoid indoctrinating them into more USA culture. We would rather our kids be more conservative in the Japanese way than how Americans are.

People think Japanese people are so different they're from other worlds when they're just the same people with the same emotions, personalities, and characters wrapped through a united (isolated) culture. I don't see much difference when I am with them, but when I encounter one, I make sure that it's okay. :) ps. A lot of Japanese friends are out-going too!

Ahh riko and i re abiut the same age and similar-ish background. I was in japan when younger living between that and philippines, and moved to US. We act a little similar, more bold in personality. Im not really gyaru though. When she pulled out the gyaru from back then it threw me back lmao. I have the filipino warmth easygoing-ness, japan's gamanshite energy and patience (tatemae is 2nd nature), then the american energy. Americans definitely are strong on boundaries its pretty difficult to learn from the background i understand. How she switches from jp and english is such a whole mood. Its so refreshing to hear someone talk similar 😂 This video helps me feel less lonely.
I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum relative to Riko san. 黒人です。でも、日本の文化けんが大好きですけど。In my case, I'm overwhelmed by the extreme individuality and the crazy pressure that can come with Capitalism. The excess, waste, carelessness, lack of respect for elders, each other and Ancestors, as well as* the Hedonism.. all these things are commonplace here. I lean a lot into Shinto, Zen and Confucianism. I do balance this with my own philosophies as well. I try to see that the individual is taken care of as well. Strong Individuals make a strong community. And during the hardest times, strong communities will produce strong individuals. 3 strong arrows are harder to break than 3 defective ones. 🙇🏾♂️
The United States, especially the major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles embody the hell of extreme individualism, hedonism and consumerism. This cancerous culture and lifestyle needs to be contained and stopped.

Japan should keep its uniquely good aspects, but do away with the cultural (and literal) suicidal parts. Some people fear that Japan will cease being Japanese, and foreigners will completely transform the country and culture into something unrecognizable. If they can remove the semi- Confucian (or maybe Bushido) influence that strangles the modern Japanese mindset, that might be the key. I'm not saying I hate that kind of philosophy inherently, but there is a common issue that all Confucian influenced cultures share. My understanding and opinion of course

Agree with you 100%. IMO they key is to understand how dehumanizing extreme collectivism and individualism are, which is less more trivial than "culture". Healthy individualism with some of the support of collectivism is ideal. Individualism without support from collectivism or collectivism without room for individualism are unsustainable.

Some historical blogs state that 'Gyaru' was adopting mainstream USA female trends of the time (90s). Hence using the English word 'Girl' adopted to Japanese phonetics. USA female trends have changed since then, and it seems Gyaru trends have changed with them.

If you think that the western sense of individuality and 周りを気にしない is healthy, I can assure you this is not the case. The entire western world is suffering a mental health crisis with skyrocketing suicide rates, drug use, and incidence of depression and anxiety all brought on by the crushing sense of social isolation that is the natural reward of excessive individualism. No doubt Japan has its own social issues that will need to be dealt with, but please, PLEASE don’t look at the west as a social model to emulate.
First of all, your English is remarkable!!!! my english proficiency can not even come close to your even though I am nikkey and studied from high school throughout college in english native country, living in homestay and boarding housing on campus. My father was from Kagoshima so I feel an affinity and whenever I visit there I feel like home, even the scenery remind me of my birth place in south America. What I like about japanese culture is how it emphasizes on "maintaining harmony and order" above oneself, this is also (indirectly) reinforced in the book " How to influence people and win friends" by Darne Carnage. Also there are thing in life that are absolute like gravity, time and biology. My point is, unfortunately, age matter when looking for a quality partner; over the year you could have noticed that attention from opposite gender have diminished that means that every year that passes by, your options will diminish as well. Statistically, women that achieves career success at the cost of starting a family regret it later in life.
She is definitely not your average Japanese. More like the type we see on Japanese variety shows. There's a chance that she was an I.B.S. student in Kagoshima. DON'T visit Kagoshima in summer. Its insanely hot and humid. Anytime from October to the beginning of June is better. Kagoshima is on the low side for foreigner presence. Youll see more foreigners in one minute in Tokyo than you will in a week in Kagoshima. I sometimes see foreign workers at convenience stores in Kagoshima. Its not as prevalent as in Tokyo. More often they are working at McDonald's. Quite a few are Nepalese. I see Vietnamese who work in many rural labour intensive jobs.
Maybe there is a precedent in traditional mythology as well. There is the Russian princess frog fairytale… where a boy kissed a frog and she turned into a beautiful princess!
the frontal cortex may not be fully developed in some cases but once you hit a certain age (18,19,20) you're an adult capable of making adult decisions...25 is not bad...but like riko says the earlier the better...that clock is ticking away...

In the first place, the average age of marriage in Japan today is 31, and it's normal to be unmarried at 25, so I think no one would care. The story about Christmas cake sounds like something from the bubble era, and it's not common in Japan today.

WRONG. The whole point is the Japanese think we celebrate Christmas with cake in the West. (Fried chicken too, so KFC is huge.) But a cake made for Christmas, the 25th, is bad the next day, the 26th, so this is where the expression came from to match with the culture of the time. Married by 25 as a female, then, or you're past your prime.

This is so good! I think this is why Anna Sawai said she got so emotional when japanese girls came up to her telling her they feel good to see more outspoken, bold and strong women. It must feel good to not feel like an outcast simply because you have a different personality and be able to relate to someone.
Her character is more resonnated to English Langauge. I think she chosed what her soul correctly aligned with her expression. I think Japanese langauge is not suitable for her. Best to talk in English if she would like to stay with her character. Thats perfectly suit her.
Stereotypical American "valley girl" accent, "content creator", lived abroad a year, jokes and expressions that sound like they come from a netflix series... No she's not unique or special she just traded a cliché for another. But yeah at least it shows people Japanese people and especially women are not a monolith. Yet it has to be said that she's also very good looking and from n economically privileged background with an international resume so she definitely doesn't represent the people of Japan, whom like most in the world don't travel outside of their borders and struggle to live decently.
Mediia in Japan is no different than media in the Philippines when it comes to Hiding the Real True Ugly Evil side oof the Filipinos, but on other topics specially vital and relevant to who the Japanese are Better than most cultures worldwide, which is why I love Japan compared to any other country 🎉
So, a different language can reshape even a mind from a conservative background. This explains a lot why most Japanese simply can't speak English or almost no other language other than theirs. It is more than a language barrier it looks like a narrow minded lifestyle of staying in a comfort zone.

Very interesting to watch new Gyaru, Gen Z. I am delighted to see there are some of you. I left Japan because of too much conformity of Japan. Not all conformity is bad but Japan still overall do not accept independence. 出る釘は打たれる。Unless you are like Ohtani of Dodgers or Sanada who acted and also became producer of recent Emmy winning Shogun. It took Sanada long time to have his independence thinking recognized. In my days, it was Ozawa Seiji, the world famous conductor. He was not accepted initially in Japan. Don’t give up, Gen Z, gyaru of Japan.

Do people actually like the "sumimasen" over-coy japanese friend/gf? I've met more people wanting the opposite haha. When I meet japanese friends in the states, usually they are all rowdy and fun (notice I never said disrespectful); I love that, but it's sad when the go back and overpolite-nize as soon as the go back home. TL; DR: Namara menkoi gyaru, doko? lol. Shout out to the cool party who invited to karaoke with them on my last visit~.
Funny how she says adopting other cultural norms/personal traits could help adapt to a modern society. From what I can tell having spent a decent amount of time in Japan, the country adopted the things it wanted and left the things it didn’t. And part of the reason Japan was so economically successful was exactly because of Japanese personality and cultural traits. Honestly she just comes across like a likeable yet slightly immature young person who has a bit of a fetish for another culture and way of being and wishes her own country could be more like that. The suicidal parts are partly due to the culture that "suffocates" them and doesn't let people be people but instead robots who "always" have to conform to the collective. Always afraid of being labeled as not "part of the team" is they simply stand out by not going to the drinking party after work for eample.

Agree with you 100%. IMO they key is to understand how dehumanizing extreme collectivism and individualism are, which is less more trivial than "culture". Healthy individualism with some of the support of collectivism is ideal. Individualism without support from collectivism or collectivism without room for individualism are unsustainable.

Some historical blogs state that 'Gyaru' was adopting mainstream USA female trends of the time (90s). Hence using the English word 'Girl' adopted to Japanese phonetics. USA female trends have changed since then, and it seems Gyaru trends have changed with them.

If you think that the western sense of individuality and 周りを気にしない is healthy, I can assure you this is not the case. The entire western world is suffering a mental health crisis with skyrocketing suicide rates, drug use, and incidence of depression and anxiety all brought on by the crushing sense of social isolation that is the natural reward of excessive individualism. No doubt Japan has its own social issues that will need to be dealt with, but please, PLEASE don’t look at the west as a social model to emulate.
First of all, your English is remarkable!!!! my english proficiency can not even come close to your even though I am nikkey and studied from high school throughout college in english native country, living in homestay and boarding housing on campus. My father was from Kagoshima so I feel an affinity and whenever I visit there I feel like home, even the scenery remind me of my birth place in south America. What I like about japanese culture is how it emphasizes on "maintaining harmony and order" above oneself, this is also (indirectly) reinforced in the book " How to influence people and win friends" by Darne Carnage. Also there are thing in life that are absolute like gravity, time and biology. My point is, unfortunately, age matter when looking for a quality partner; over the year you could have noticed that attention from opposite gender have diminished that means that every year that passes by, your options will diminish as well. Statistically, women that achieves career success at the cost of starting a family regret it later in life.

DON'T visit Kagoshima in summer. Its insanely hot and humid. Anytime from October to the beginning of June is better.
Kagoshima is on the low side for foreigner presence. Youll see more foreigners in one minute in Tokyo than you will in a week in Kagoshima. I sometimes see foreign workers at convenience stores in Kagoshima. Its not as prevalent as in Tokyo. More often they are working at McDonald's. Quite a few are Nepalese. I see Vietnamese who work in many rural labour intensive jobs.

I live in Japan, but I've never heard of Christmas cake things around me. In the first place, the average age of marriage in Japan today is 31, and it's normal to be unmarried at 25, so I think no one would care. The story about Christmas cake sounds like something from the bubble era, and it's not common in Japan today.

WRONG. The whole point is the Japanese think we celebrate Christmas with cake in the West. (Fried chicken too, so KFC is huge.) But a cake made for Christmas, the 25th, is bad the next day, the 26th, so this is where the expression came from to match with the culture of the time. No she's not unique or special she just traded a cliché for another. But yeah at least it shows people Japanese people and especially women are not a monolith. I'm a black guy. Born and raised in Florida and one of our most famous bands is Cannibal Corpse. Not all conformity is bad but Japan still overall do not accept independence. 出る釘は打たれる。Unless you are like Ohtani of Dodgers or Sanada who acted and also became producer of recent Emmy winning Shogun. It took Sanada long time to have his independence thinking recognized. In my days, it was Ozawa Seiji, the world famous conductor. He was not accepted initially in Japan. Funny how she says adopting other cultural norms/personal traits could help adapt to a modern society. From what I can tell having spent a decent amount of time in Japan, the country adopted the things it wanted and left the things it didn’t. And part of the reason Japan was so economically successful was exactly because of Japanese personality and cultural traits. Honestly she just comes across like a likeable yet slightly immature young person who has a bit of a fetish for another culture and way of being and wishes her own country could be more like that. She needs to travel more. She’ll stop viewing elsewhere with rose tinted glasses and hopefully stop basing her whole persona on being a contrarian
