  • My girlfriend had a 2002 330CI and it seems to need a new thermostat once every fall.
I have used different brands and the last one seems to be built better (MAHL). We see how long it lasts.
Apparent depending on where it was built and the date, this car could have come with one of at least three brands. Because of this there are 3-4 different "OEM" thermostats listed. I was confused by this at first.

joel arseneault My (pre-)heater on the thermostat went bad. It threw an engine code, but did not trip the check engine light. So I suggest Ane Gan to diagnose/scan the car via the obd2 port. The faultcode I got was: 279C

Poor video from a shade tree mechanic. When the probe heats up it melts the wax inside the Thermostat and allows the probe to slide up to open the Thermostat and allow coolant to circulate. As the coolant circulates thru the engine and radiator the temperature drops, the wax hardens and the probe slides down and closes. This repeats based on coolant temperature.

Man... you make it really hard to be nice to you, when you start your comment tossing out insults.
I'm not sure what part of this video that you disagree with ? Was my sin that I didn't use the proper terminology and say that it is a thermowax plunger ? I clearly said that the probe heats up and opens the thermostat ? You're not clear enough in your insults to determine exactly what it is that I got wrong.
If I am wrong, that doesn't make me a shade tree mechanic. That means I got bad info off the internet. Again, you don't explain how I'm wrong, and your explanation of the operation is wrong ... you say it "allows the probe to slide up" ... That's not what happens.
Honda uses thermowax plungers on their lawnmower engines to open the choke when the engine is warm. Dishwashers use the same device with a heating element to open the soap dispenser. The wax expands and pushes out a piston, similar to a hydraulic cylinder.

I'm not sure. If they are both E46 models then I assume they are. You should be able to find this info by comparing part numbers on a site like www.partsgeek.com/ or www.pelicanparts.com/
