      Allow me to throw in some real prosthetic knowledge I have. Modern prosthetic arms function by identifying the nerves that are supposed to control the hand, fingers, etc, and surgically moving them to points close to the surface of the skin. Then, they attach electrodes to those points and use them to read what the body wants. Throw in some fancy circuits and a lot of physical therapy, and the prosthetic arm can move almost however the user wants. I think it's safe to assume that automail works in a similar way, considering that adjustments of Edward's arm can cause him pain.
      Here's Havoc's issue. For this technique to work, you need to be able to find the right nerves to make it function. In hand replacements, this is done on the shoulder, where the nerves can be easily accessed and moved. But Havoc's injury is not in a convenient location. It is in his spine. The nerves required to ensure functional leg movement are all tangled up with every single nerve that travels through the spine to the lower body. It is a near impossible task to determine which nerves are the right ones, and which are useless for automail use.
      A modern doctor could spend a lifetime trying to identify each severed nerve, and that's with access to MRI technology. It's doubtful that Amestris has anything capable of looking through bone (or even X-rays, for that matter. Nuclear science doesn't seem to exist yet in this setting). To give him automail, they would have to attach wires to every single nerve ending (the surgery alone would outlast any anaesthetic they could give him) and then test each of them individually, building his automail around that. And rehabilitation would take years on top of that. Even if it were possible, it would likely leave Havoc in near constant pain, like his entire lower body was burning.
      It would be much more humane and safe to just give him a wheelchair and a veteran's pension. Nothing short of a miracle could fix that.

    25:34 I don't know if anyone else has already explained it, but in the case of the scene that nullified Scar's attack, Ed was hit in the head by debris and lost his balance, and he had no choice but to defend himself when it became impossible to avoid the ensuing attack. So Ed need to reach out for defend Scar's attack, but at this time, he was troubled about the 50% chance about whether to reach out his left normal arm or his right automail arm. If he fail to defend by use his automail arm, it will only break his automail arm, but if he chose to defend with his left arm and failed to 50% gamble, it would lead to immediately death. So Ed choose use his right arm. And his 50% gambling was success.
    Scar's destructive transmutation, it doesn't destroy it just by touching it. For example, if he tries to destroy steel, he has to calculate the steel decomposition formula in his head. So if he trying to destroy human bodies(Likewise, stone, wood, water, copper, coal, everything has a different decomposition formula) with a disintegration formula that destroys steel, it doesn't work. In the case of this scene, Scar intended to break down the Ed's body and Ed held out his steel arm and invalidated it. But in that situation, Ed didn't know what Scar was thinking, so he had to 50% gambleling. That why he said "lucky~"

    • @regobing5435
      @regobing5435 2 года назад +5

      To be honest, i would have gone for the automail. You'd have to be insane to Risk your life over your arm.
      Even if he loses the gamble its "only" an Arm which can be repaired. So it was pretty obvious that Ed would risk his automail.
      I guess Scar got greedy and went straight for the kill for that reason

    • @kmsg816
      @kmsg816 2 года назад +7

      And that we can be inferred from this, even if it's the same stone, there's a difference in composition between granite and marble, and if they apply the granite destruction formula to marble, maybe the marble isn't destroyed properly or only partially. Perhaps the marble will be destroyed in a limited way only for the matching components shared as the stone. (It's impossible to understand 100% of the composition of things, but if Scar succeeds in understanding 90% of the computation and breaks it down, it might go beyond the level of fragmentation and break it down like dust. If he understand 100%, he may break it down into atoms haha. um....maybe...? )
      And not all alchemists, including Scar, had the ability to understand matter by touching it. If they cover their eyes and rely on tactile and destroy things without providing any information, it will involve multiple trials and errors.
      That means that Scar memorizes all the different components of everything in order to break down the various materials and objects in detail and completely. He hates alchemy, but he has a very high understanding of it.

    • @marcmooney1242
      @marcmooney1242 2 года назад +3

      I'm late to the game here, but this moment was explained in the Manga. Ed canceled Scar's attack by changing the elemental composition of his automail. That caused Scar's alchemy to rebound just like it did the first time they fought.

    • @kmsg816
      @kmsg816 2 года назад +1

      @@marcmooney1242 Well, that's weird, I know that's a way that Ed has never used at this point in time(ep21). The way you're talking about it, was fighting the Grid in the past started by weakening his shield's carbon composition of the Grid and incapacitaing it. But I know that the way Ed manipulates the components of the automail is from episode 48 later on. Not now. He choosing between a regular arm and a steel arm. The battle with Scar, in which he changed the constituent elements of the automail to nullify Scar's attack, was not this remake version, but a scene from the 2003 Old version, maybe you're confused with this, aren't you?
      ruclips.net/video/vf_4bKj98fY/видео.html
      Spoiler-----------------------------
      In the remake, Ed fights Scar three times in total. And Ed wins the final battle, Ed is equipped with a new type of auto-mail that can working even in bad weather, and that auto-mail doesn't use steel at all.
      Scar was no idea about this, was caught in Ed's deception, mistook it for a regular steel automail, and scar failed to destroy it. So the fight you're talking about is not that Ed changed the constituent elements of Automail into alchemy. Ed reached out his automail that wasn't made of steel to Scar to induce an attack.
      And the fight you mentioned about tampering with the auto-mail components was when you fought with Pride in episode 48. At that time, Ed didn't replace the North automail, but he used it all the way because it was very light than normal, and it was filled with lot of carbon, so he could manipulate the carbon like a Grid's sheild and manipulate the intensity at will. (Pride : " Are you mimicking grid? " )
      In other words, in this case is also, Ed didn't change the composition of the auto-mail to anything else. He just increases the automail's intensity. This was possible because this North automail was full of carbon. Not possible if he use regular automail.
      This means that Scar can destroy it at any time if he knows what the material is composed of. This way is doesn't work for Scar as a result. It's just that Ed knocked it down in a surprise attack without giving time to analyze it in the third fight.
      Of course, Ed act some kind of transmutate action when Ed defend Scar's attack in that scene, so it didn't just block it just only with his hands, but it also involved some transmutation that mitigated the impact. maybe..? But it's not the transmutation that changed the components of the auto-mail.

    • @marcmooney1242
      @marcmooney1242 2 года назад +1

      @@kmsg816 No, I'm confident that's what he did here. The scene shows Ed clapping his hands right before the clash, and the lightning reaction indicates both Ed and Scar used alchemy. If all Ed did was guess correctly, he wouldn't need to transmute for that.

    Automail isn't a cure-all, it's a risky surgery involving purely mechanical prosthetics that work in conjunction with nerves (since there are no electronics to simulate body signals). Havoc explained the damage is to his spine not his actual legs, and the nerves are totally severed. But even if the damage were to his legs, it would be risky. He would have to amputate both legs and be okay with all the complications that could arise both during the procedure and in his life afterward (just as Ed has pain and trouble with his stumps along with the strain of having to carry metal on his body at all times), plus he would still need years of physical therapy to properly and safely adjust, just as Ed was told back in episode 2.

    Hm, I see a major difference between Ed and Al being kept in the dark about Hughes and Winery not knowing how her parents died. Ed and Al literally didn't even know that Hughes was dead. And they were deliberately mislead and lied to by two different people. Not only is a lie like that not sustainable in the long term, but the only real benefit it has is delaying the amount of time before they have to feel that grief, which will now be compounded by the betrayal and anger towards the people who kept the truth from them. Winery, on the other hand, knows that her parents died while helping people during the civil war. She just doesn't know the specifics of how they died. And at this point all Ed and Al can offer her is conjecture. Conjecture that has the potential to create unnecessary angst since then she would have to live knowing that her parents' killer is currently roaming the streets in the city she's residing in and actively hunting down more people she loves. I can understand why Ed and Al would want to at least confirm their theory before telling her, if not detain him first so she doesn't have to deal with the added stress of their current situation. She can still get closure by knowing who killed her parents without having to live in fear of history repeating itself if they don't tell her right now. You know?

    Last Exile is an anime that has a thing about using chess terminology for all its episode titles.
    IDK if it'd make good reaction content, but a fun bit of trivia for you, Kenny. Also, if you haven't seen the full version of the Age of Empires 2 intro, you'd probably enjoy looking that up.

    to clarify, the arm was worth the BINDING of Al's soul to the armor. Also, the human body has to be worthy of something, considering a soul can't exist without one unless bound to an object.

    Well the Winry & Scar situation is wayyyy different than the Hughes one. They where kept in the dark that he was dead, Winry knows her parents are dead just not how. I think it wouldn't do any good to tell her, at this point it would just be ripping open an old wound for what exactly? What could Winry do knowing Scar killed her parents like what, 7, 10, years ago?
    I'm just saying, it was wrong to lie about Hughes to Ed & Al, but I don't think the same is true for Winry about Scar.

    Manga note for this episode:
    Lust didn't actually do too much to Marcoh at the time. She threatened him and a little girl that had come by his house, but she left him there for the time being.
    However, after Lust's death, Envy and Gluttony were sent to collect him. Envy was disguised as Breda, the person Mustang had just sent to go find him, but as soon as Marcoh saw Gluttony, he tried to slam the door on them. So Marcoh was only recently captured following Lust's death. (Also the trip depressed Gluttony, because he could smell Lust in Marcoh's house)

    Havoc can't get automail cuz it's an internal injury to his nerves. Automail needs the nerves intact and undamaged, hence why its used for severed limbs. They can't exactly replace his spine with automail.
