  • When a Roman mosaic was uncovered on farmland near Coberley in 2003 the site became protected under the countryside stewardship scheme and investigated through a small excavation and a limited 'geophys' survey.
    Time Team travels back to find out more about what lies beneath the surface.

      Yes. I have to admit that, at first sight, I figured he'd never sully those beautifully-creased knees in the trenches -- he'd just boss the diggers around. Shows how one should never make assumptions!

    The most important result of this amazing program has to be the geophysics. The better we can predict what is in the ground based on geophysics the less we need to dig and destroy. I visited Corinium (the easier way to say Cirencester :p) in 2010. I was in the Cotswolds touring by car all the Roman and Medieval sites I could find. Had a disappointing surprise when i went hunting for the Roman road that goes N from Corinium... no sign of it. Then asked at the museum and it turns out the modern road is literally built over it. Time Team mention it, called the Ermine Way now. It was used throughout the Middle Ages and later became a modern road. Pretty amazing and apparently common in Britain. Something I thought was limited to Italy.

    This is about the time I think a lot of viewers started to think "oh no, another Roman Villa." It started to feel like we'd seen it all before and the attempts at alternative, more modern archaeology like the last episode about a Georgian mansion, and the blitz dig, were frankly a bit boring. People often bang on about how the show was killed off by the changes made that Mick hated but the reality is, viewing figures had fallen sharply by this time and the show was struggling. The uncomfortable truth for Time Team diehard viewers is that the show may have just run its course and armchair viewers who have no love of archaeology other than a natural curiosity of what is under the ground, got bored with it. I think it's marvellous that through RUclips, a whole new generation of enthusiasts (including a lot of Americans) have discovered the show and continue to enjoy it. It was a great show and the legacy of its archaeological discoveries will endure.

    • @billie-jobenway8658
      @billie-jobenway8658 5 лет назад +5

      Agreed, a lot of the changes made to the show were a reaction to falling viewership, not the cause of the end of the show as is often argued. Bringing in a second presenter and other new personalities was both because they were trying to appeal to the interests of a newer generation of viewers. Couple that with the fact that it was 20 seasons. People die, people move on to new jobs and locations, the show itself changed location if I recall correctly. There was no way the team could remain intact for so long without jarring changes.
      I too am glad that the show not only educated and increased interest in archaeology in Britain but also across the pond here in the US. I have always had a love of archaeology and Time Team allowed me to be there to see it happen, sometimes in real time such as Time Team Live episodes. They have done such a great service for the field of archaeology .

      Though it hurts me a little that the role they arranged for her in her late stages of pregnancy required her to pretend to not know things we know she knows, ie “and what is opus signinum?” Helen has an advanced degree in archaeology; at least when Tony fills the role of pretending not to know things so experts can explain, it doesn’t fly so directly in the face of education.
      Of course, there’s a disturbing number of commenters over seasons of videos that truly believe that Tony has no idea what’s going on…

    Excellent example of the life of an estate, with multiple additions over time. Reminds me of the Turkdean villa shown in S5E4 and S6E9. Neil Holbrook used to really annoy me but as I have re-watched these maybe I have gotten used to him. (His near-incoherency when speaking quickly still bugs me, though.) It is definitely a tribute to the archaeological world that someone who Does Not speak in plummy Oxbridge accents could rise to the top of the profession.

      Neil used to bug me at first too. It was his test pits mostly. By the time I was watching the entire series for the third time I had a different opinion of him. He seemed to loosen up some as the years on the show progressed and I guess so did I. I let go of my opinion that only full trenches got them anywhere and stopped holding his more cautious style against him. It was watching him drop about a dozen or more test pits in a roman villa and then expand them as the archaeology proved to be worth it.
