How To Remove Stuck Quick Connect Fuel Vacuum Lines - Without Breaking The Clips!

- I can't believe I didn't figure this out sooner! But after breaking a handful of these on my Ford Mustang, I finally got it, and I'm happy to share this knowledge with you!
Similar clips are found on all kinds of vacuum and fuel lines of Ford, GM, Dodge Chrysler vehicles. The connectors come in all shapes and sizes. Some are more friendly than others! Even with these tricks, they can still be a bit sticky. Just breathe and be patient!
If you do happen to break these clips, here is a kit that contains some sizes that I could not find in any local auto parts stores. If you're really in a bind, you may be able to get away with a zip tie in a pinch (your miles may vary)!

Seven years of cursing this design and breaking clips I finally look this up and immediately try it THANK YOU I feel like such a fool! 😂
Knowledge is power. Thanks for showing the proper way to remove the lines. Most fittings under the hood these days are designed to be broken by mechanics that just don't know how to remove them; let alone the DIY's. And dealers won't just sell you the clips, they'll want to sell you the whole enchilada. Thanks to you and RUclips !
I have great respect for people that can admit we never stop learning no matter what age we are.
Thanks for the great info
You just saved many people a whole lotta time, frustration and money, is not for the small clip purchase only but for all the gas spend driving around sesrching for the correct one.
This has to be one of the most useful videos I have ever watched. .Thanks for sharing and, please just keep em coming. THANK YOU **************
Thanks for such a clear concise explanation! Just went through this myself after working on cars for 45 years and still picking up great tips from others!
I've broke these clips more times than I can count and have to keep them with my fuel line repair kit. Appreciate it 🙏 💯 🙌
They break because they are hard and brittle.
Same principle for all quick disconnects, forward tension...Thanks for the great tip; it will save us all the frustration of getting it on and off by design.
Dude you saved my ass, I been fighting with this all morning. Watches a hundred videos it seems like! Glad I found yours.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
You never get too old to learn. I consider myself a very experienced mechanic, and I still learn something very important occasionally. And, yes I've broken my share of those clips.
You are a flipping lifesaver. Thanks to you, I don't need new fuel lines in addition to my new pump! Car is fixed and your video was the final thing I needed. Thank you!!!
OMG! Thank you, thank you! I was trying to get the hoses of an evap canister that had this style connector. I started down the path of trying to pry the clamp out with a screwdriver and then felt it wasn't going to work. Scoured the internet for a while before I found your video, and sure enough - easy as pie the way you showed it!! Thank you for helping me avoid the broken clip route!!!!
I’ve gotten so frustrated with these 😂 even tried searching for how to properly remove them because I knew there had to be a way! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this information delivered so simple! ❤
I replaced fuel injectors on my 2003 Lesabre 3800 the other day. The fuel inlet is just like the white clip. I got lucky and it didn't break when I used my pick to pull it out the back. At least I know now and it didn't cost me either. Thank you.
THANK YOU for this video! This worked for my Hyundai Sonata in tank fuel evap line I
could not get it off my fuel pump until I followed this method (even after watching mechanics on other videos fight to get it off saying how tricky it is - not tricky at all if you know how!)
Thank You So Much! for the Video on how to remove the evap an fuel lines!
Now I Know How! 😃
Thanks for sharing an important tip. I have learnt something new.
You saved me! Why did you think this was obvious? It's not at all!
Earned a subscriber. Small channels unite!
Thank you man! Was not easy to find how to do this since I didn't knew what the hose was for! I was guessing vacuum hose because it's mounted on top of my V8's driver side valve cover.
Well after 4 broken clips, I found this video! For next time! Thank you!
I ended up removing the injectors from the manifold, now way this little bugger would come loose. Thanx for showing. There is even an special wrench for this.
Been wrenching a long time and those type of clips are always a pain in the arse. Thanks for admitted your own "stupidity". You just saved a lot of us suffering from the same case of the dumb from ever having to admit it.
Bro I feel like i struck gold!!! Thanks you
Man that was a life saver. I was getting flustered 02 ramger fuel vent hose had the white style.
The zip tie to the rescue. I used it on my 6.7 diesel fuel return line. Been on it for 2 years now. 😅
Thanks you just save me from breaking clips. All the way from South Africa,Cape town (the mother city)
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Dude!! This is gonna save me so much time.
Thank you!! No one seems to show how to do this in videos related to fuel lines. Us plebeians have had to try and figure it out ourselves... I'm trying to swap out the fuel sending unit in a Jeep right now, and I'm not about to brute for this thing off x_x
A thin flat wrench to go over the locking clip snuggly, and a medium sized flat screwdriver to lightly wedge the pipe of works every time for me.
I have done the same thing to. We are trying to get to the problem and get it fixed so we're rushing through the small things not paying attention to the small details. So don't feel embarrassed 🤘✌️
Thanks for the useful information.
These connectors are horrible.
Ty Pete I have to change the fuel pump in a 2007 jeep commander and decided to cut a access panel above ..I went and bought a disconnect set I guess I don't need them now! Ty
Thank you, great Tip!
Thank you
Squirt of silicone always helps and another squirt when reinstalling too! 👍
Really appreciate, you saved me 😅
that is correct . push first then pull and this is for all quick connectors . good video .
Thanks! It's definitely not immediately obvious. To pull off, first push on 😆
Hello Pete,
Like all the others - Thank you!!! I've been looking everywhere for this and ironically many other videos show the wrong way - or breaking it.
Question:
On the example you showed - Do you have to remove the red outer clip off 1st,,,,and then press the housing down to press inside clip in?
Hope I'm making sense? and thanks in advance.
Regards,
Jack
Wow, thank you so much for this information. You saved me a lot of grief. LOL
Thank you!
Nice work lad
The problem is that these 'quick connects' are usually in a horrible position to 'push down' on them further when on the vehicle itself. So the better mechanism would be "Go back to the stuff that worked before!" and phase out these quick connects.
Ah, but the lowest skill worker on the assembly line can put it on quickly, even with a blindfold. That is the key.
They normally are not that bad if you work on cars …. Honestly easier than using a disconnect line tool on non quick disconnect lines
@@FirieonOG I've worked on a lot of stuff. Mostly old and racecars. Never had a hose clamp get stuck. Whether the video was helpful or not, thanks for watching and commenting 🍻
Thank you! Broke them all:(
thank you!
Great video....thanks....
Are these kind of quick connect has a dual shutoff feature?
Thank you plenty much Young Man. I'm 70s I thought I knew it all.⁉️😂🙈🤣☮️
thank you sir
We use a silicone spray 1st and move the union up and down to let the lube seep in.
They always come out without breaking ✅
Yes and maybe some shop air to clear out debris.
When I started my current job. They had a bag of those clips, because they were doing the same thing until I showed them the correct way. They said same thing you said when showed them. We never touched that bag again.
I'll take a double serving of dumb embarassment for not having figured this out myself. Thanks for the UUUUUghe, Pete.
Appreciate it.
SOAB. Thank you.
thankyou
Nice video. Don't be hard on yourself. Many of us have done the same damn thing.
I almost wasted a hundred bucks on a fuel line disconnect tool set, but even the guys selling those won't put up a simple video telling how their tool functions. I almost broke my clip, but I ended up leaving it connected and just swinging the intake to the side to get the job done, but it's been bugging me ever since! Thanks for the information. I did already order a box of those clips anticipating problems the next time, but the strange thing is, that the clips in question here are listed on the box for GM and Ford, yet I'm working on a 2015 Jeep 3.6 Liter V6 and it has those very clips.
Mopar likes to copy everyone else's homework 😏 Glad I helped!
Hey, I just happened to think. I did go online looking for the clips and I had found the ones on amazon that you had listed also. So I got those ordered for next time in case I need them. That first clip that came off, though, I never really found a source for those, and I just worry about dropping one of those and losing it, so if you know a source for those, I'd appreciate finding out. Could probably do without it I guess, if it came to that.
Thank you soo much 😂😂
Hell yeah was stuck on the same thing bro
A Homer, doh moment.
Good video. Happy Motoring.
But often doesn't work under vehicles on evap when dirt & gravel gets behind the clips which prevents them from being depressed. Would love to get my hands around the necks of some of these engineers
What to do if you broke it⁉️
It fucken works thanks
Wow. Ford made that pretty common knowledge years ago. I didnt realize people were breaking these. All spring clip fittings have to be pushed in to release. All of the tools used to release every other fitting has you push the tool in and push down on the fitting then pull off. Amazing what one views as common knowledge isnt so common. Explains all the zipties I find to replace the clip.
Fkkkk ive been sweating removing those. Thanks for the videos
Gm use these on emissions systems....
Shit ! Your not alone 😭. I've done the same thing to in the beginning
Also blow all dirt from around it too, the dirt will bind the clips.
Cummins actually have a special tool for that.
Another thing i do is spray penetrating lube on all quick release clips. That helps with tough & dirty clips. Works like a charm
I do that too. Makes it so much easier. I use it on those 4 wheeler clips that hold the plastic trim on the fenders,
Except that penetrating lube will degrade the plastic. Just don’t. Use some soapy water on em if u need some lube w plastic don’t use petrochemical stuff on it.
@@michaelbenoit248 it also makes the plastic shiny. Just kidding. I usually wash it down after I get it put back together, to neutralize the petroleums.
Hail to the King baby
nice vid! whats the sound track?
Punch Deck - Fluid Dynamics
ruclips.net/video/7MfrkYl24N8/видео.html
the same with many types of electric connectors in all cars push first
Happened to me too
I always break those tabs. The fuel filter uses them too. All I can say is..."DUH?".
I think Subaru uses something similar on their fuel lines
All I ever mess with that little c clamp alway was a pull out so how I get around the broke legs anyone know.
Common push push then remove
Volvo uses these on all the fuel lines.
Can you fix this clip with a new clip part ?
Only if you watch till the end of the video! 😉
How do you remove them once broken?
Pick, slot screwdriver, or needle nose. Not much holding them in at that point.
Chrysler uses these connections to… and they suck !
الف رحمة ع والديك
OMG, those devious bastards! Just when you think you have mastered every disconnect, (fluid, electrical), they come up with this! It would be neat if they included instruction on their disconnects in the manual or better yet,how about a couple of samples.
I want to wager whoever published the first few DIY vids on removing the fuel line on the Ford fuel filters was a Dorman employee trying to sell more clips. Every single DIY vid on this website for doing fuel filters you see someone breaking the clip
Don't be embarrassed!,I've broken heaps. They just don't learn..
Not stupid at all, those “quick clips” can be a pain in the arse.
Ive made that mistake a few stupid times 🤦🏿♂️😂🤣😂🤣
It's plastic. It breaks because plastic only lasts about 10-15 years before it becomes Uber brittle. You're supposed to break the clip and replace it. Either that or do like I do and cut those stupid things off and use a regular hose clamp. Metal hose clamps can last a lifetime.
wow I feel like an idiot!!
FFS.... I broke 2 yesterday lol
Count me in as an idiot, I've done the same thing.
Thanks
Bruh
.the music !?
I think just lile you busted alot of clips
horsewhip the engineers....this is just another example of overly complex automotive engineering.
Yeah but it takes the guy on the assembly line a fraction of a second compared to a hose clamp 🥴
He said horsewhip because he got his ass kicked by a piece of plastic 😂😂😂😂
That's the crappiest design for connector I have ever seen
Get to the point you talk too much
Thank you
Thank you
