Hello. I have been attempting the strafe jump for a few months and have even had people try to show me how to do it through voice chats and being in game with them. I can get to 500 speed but only maybe two times got over 600. I was wondering about mouse sensitivity and controls for such settings. Also I think there must be a moment when I should be pressing the space bar and the strafe keys and I must be doing something wrong with that combination. I can't figure it out and I am determined to do so. Thank you for this and continue playing great games. :)
hello I know this reply is a bit late, but in the case you haven't figured it out and would still like to learn it, here are two tips that should help: - tap the jump key instead of holding it. In QC there is a small penatly for accelerating when holding down the jump key, but if you tap jump when you land that penalty isn't there. - the real meat to get higher speed though, is to look a bit further to the direction you are strafe jumping when you pick up speed. Let's say we pretend we have a top down view of your character. If straight forward is 90 degree, 0 is horizontal line to your right, and 180 is horizontal line to your left, then initially when you start strafe jumping to the right (or left), the degree offset from 90 degree will be about 15 degree to 20 degree (I made some number up, since I don't have the precise angles, but the theory should be correct). Now as you pick up speed, going from 400 ups, to 500 ups, and increasing as we speak, you'll want to increase that offset. So instead of looking 15 to 20 degree to the left or right (depending on strafe jump direction), you'll want to look a bit more. You'll know you found the sweet spot as your acceleration sees a big increase. Hope that helps. Sorry about wordy explanation, but that's as good as a visualization of the principle as I can give, with the limited knowledge I have of the math behind the strafe jumping mechanic which I got from another video.
@@SleepyRickyC92 Yeah I have given up trying to learn. . .I have tried all you have stated. I have had people send me tutorials. I have had people show me in person. . .I do the things right, but it doesn't show up right haha. Thank you though.
Been playing Quake for few years now, and I strongly reccommend to bind jump to Right mouse button. It greatly improves your timing and accuracy of jumping in general (rocket, strafe, etc.)
I recently starting using jump with right mouse button and spacebar for zoom and holy shit does it help! One of the best tips I've ever received for this game.
I have a question that relates to the underlying mechanics, so you might not have an answer for me. Why is it that you turn toward the strafing direction, rather than away from it? As far as basic vector analysis goes, presuming you get one unit vector forward with "w" and one unit vector left with "a," you should be jumping 45º to the left if you're facing straight forward, so turning, say 45º left should have you jumping entirely sideways instead of forward. One imagines you should need to turn 45º to the right to compensate and maintain forward momentum, so I'm confused as to why it works backwards to this.
Nevermind, this: ruclips.net/video/rTsXO6Zicls/видео.html explains it. It's based on how the engine updates player acceleration; by turning toward the strafe you add more acceleration than you do by turning away, and you normalize this to your intended direction of travel by the alternating turns. Weird.
I have been trying to get strafe jumping to work for many years, been trying for hours and hours and even more hours. I probably been trying to get strafejumping to work for +50hrs in total and I cant get it to work at all. I do exactly like you describe to the point of my hands shaking in pain due to trying so many times, but I still cant get the speed to increase what so ever almost. I dont get it at all. I could not get it to work in Quake Live and I not get it to work in Quake Champions. Its so weird. I can play the game otherwise, and I have been playing computergames my hole life so I am not a beginner in that regard, but still it seems like it is impossible for me to get it to work, what am I doing wrong you think??! D-:
Hmm, might be a small error, are you also pressing forward and a strafe key as your jumping together? You need both movement directions to create the speed :)
@@myztroZenAku yes that is the thing, I am doing all that, but, I think I might just not have the feel for it for some reason. I push forward and a and d and a and d in coordination with moving the mouse in the same direction just like one should and just like you showed in the video, but still I get some speed for like 1 sec and then I fail. I cant even get to the third pillar on the jumping test on Quake Live... Its really frustrating, I which I knew someone that could just show me irl but I don't.. oh well sigh thanks for answering anyways
oh wow so I'm currently learning this and seeing your key inputs in slow mo solved my issue. I didn't realize you were supposed to press the strafe key before your next jump, I thought you did it as you jumped or a little before.
Strafing in this game is completely different then CS strafing. I have been strafing without holding W and now in this game you have to hold it. Its screwing me up.
I understand the basics but I can't for the life of me get to the top speed. I'm typically at 400 ups on the Speedometer, whereas people on Twitch get to 520 within a couple jumps. I can get on occasion to 500+ velocity but it's just luck. I have a hard time controlling the directon too. In Quake III too I have experimented with half circle. I can't get past 400 velocity on the initial jump, so I can't clear the "opc1" map. Any tips?
faB you are making something wrong, I learned in 2 hours nearly perfect strafing/bhopping. (500+ in Tachometer after 3/4 jumps) Quake Champions is my first Quake, but I tried Quake 3 Arena and works perfectly too. (Dont hold spacebar)
It's essentially the same but different when you turn. You're using your initial momentum and instead of alternating strafe keys, you continue moving in that direction and turn. Notice after I pivot, I don't turn my mouse but I jump twice on the same line. When this happens, you won't gain as much speed but you'll be able to turn effectively
@@myztroZenAku just to see if its possible... could you go to training tutorial and after picking protection (before finish tuto) there is 3 pillars .. doing an 8 there with strafe jumping... is it possible? im trying to do that... not a ez task but sometimes i can manage tho only 1 pillar to other xD the turn arround strafe is what i want to learn
I'm very fresh to Quake and strafe jumping, but it's coming along slowly; I'd love to see a follow up video that talks about combating movement predictability.
Why don't just hold down Space (the jump key) instead of pressing it again and again? From what I tried it seems to jump again right when I touch the ground, better timed than I could do that manually.
Generally it's habit; I find pressing each time makes me feel more in-control. An added advantage is you can stop pressing in immediate situations. Other scenarios where holding the space will make you jump when you're telling your brain not to too slowly e.g. someone surprising you around a corner

Yeah I actually found that holding space works better for me in Champions. Not a strafe jump champ or anything, but I could pull it off in QLive, without holding space down. In fact, holding space made it harder for me. QChampions is the opposite to my experience for some strange reason for me. I simply can't strafe jump for some reason I time it really wrong or too late, but with holding it it works. I'm thinking its a server delay and I am always pressing it too late. Can't think of any other reason for it to be working so badly for me, I am doing the same thing.
Maybe its placebo, but I used to hold jump to strafe jump but now I only press it before landing and when I time it right there seems to have a little speed boost.
Correct me if I'm wrong. When you start a SJ in a direction, let's say strafe left + mouse look left, while you are still in air, before you land, you then press strafe right + mouse look right, is that correct?
If you cut at 90', you will most likely lose all your speed; but if you enter at an angle you want to change at and make a small degree change, you'll be able to do it

Space bar probably

how about binding jump on scroll?
Mouse 4 for scoping
What's the background music?

whatever works best for you
I would tap. If you were to play Quake Live or Quake 3 holding the space bar it would severely mess you up.

Dodge movement is definitely on my list of videos to make in the next few weeks!
what is your sens/DPI?
Hey mate, it's 1600dpi with 0.567 in-game

Can't beat budget 2 mousepads put together ;)
What is the software you are using to track what keys and buttons and where your mouse is?
It seems really handy to have!

What's the song called?
how to make run faster ?

just synchronise direction of mouse & with direction of arrows & the direction u want to jump in :p
Will CSGO experience help here?
a bit, but my habit of spamming strafe for bhopping in csgo made it a bit harder to get used to the quake movements.
but is there any way to jump and change direction of movement? Like 90' corners?
If you cut at 90', you will most likely lose all your speed; but if you enter at an angle you want to change at and make a small degree change, you'll be able to do it
Only with Anarki/Sorlag who have more air control. Alternatively you can do some corner cutting with Slash's crouch slide.
