Based on these hints and clues, and history..... you can tell that Toranaga is based on Ieyasu Tokugawa.... FAMOUSLY KNOWN, Ieyasu in his childhood belonged to the Mikawa people (Matsudaira clan, aka Tokugawa other clan name), and his clan lost a major battle and lost prestige. So their heir, aka Ieyasu, was sent to the ODA clan and became a hostage (Living along side the famous ODA NOBUNAGA).... When they grew up, oda helped Ieyasu get his clan back in order and Tokugawa clan basically became Oda clan main ally, guarding its rear against Japan's greatest warlord (Takeda Shingen). At this time, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (AKA the TAIKO), became Oda's shoebearer (literally carrying his shoes), and eventually vassal.... Oda eventually was betrayed by Akechi Mitsuhide (another vassal) and his clan basically got mostly wiped out. John ist NOT a pirate. He mentions previously that he has a "letter of marque" from the Dutch, which means he is a privateer. The big difference is that a pirate is an outlaw who attacks random ships and bases to plunder for his own. A privateer may use the same methods but does it not (only) for himself but for the government he has the letter of marque from. So basically a privateer is a mercenary at sea who attacks only ships and bases he is legally authorized to from the government which hired him. In John's case only spanish and portuguese ones. This statue of a combatant protects him unter the laws of war. He can't be hanged like a criminal but has to be treated as a prisoner of war by his enemies. It can be argued that the Japanese don't care for all this because it is their territory and they are not at war neither with England and The Netherlands nor with Spain and Portugal. But it matters for the Portuguese. If they would play along their own laws they would have to admit publicly everything what John told Toranaga about them which will lead to their undoing. This is the main cause they want to kill him by assassins or hang him as a "pirate".
I agree, that he is most likely a privateer, but what about when he told Mariko, "i have no lords, i came out here on my own accord" makes me think hes more pirate than privateer (with what little difference that would make to japan). However, that statement he made could have been made from a privateer, or a pirate.
@@stephenmoney4722 I think he means that literally. He does not serve an english lord. And he describes his motifs clearly in his monologue about the horizon. Gat to remember Buntaro is Hiromatsu's son and Fuji is his granddaughter, also Mariko's father was the main General for a lord who is now dead, he was the main guy before the Taiko
I cannot believe the writing on Buntaro's last stand. They made us really not like this guy through the first 3 episodes, only to show us how he is actually a hella formidable Warrior who did his duty to Protect his Lord and his family.
I dont think Ishrio ordered the hit on Blackthorne. It was the Christian regent. The dude working with the catholic translator/church. Thats why i think he wasnt surprised the Anjin was still alive. Also this show is amazing!! So glad yall are reacting to it.
Blackthorne most likely named his son after the House of Tudor, the ruling house of England at the time. His daughter is most likely named after his current queen, Elizabeth the first, house of Tudor
The Monarch: Legacy of Monsters team owes Anna Sawai a big apology. This show proves she can act, she has the talent and charisma. Monarch just gave nothing to work with.
Im pretty sure Torunaga already knew how to dive and swim, he was just making John tired so that he can race him. But also testing his resolve, patience, following commands and perserverance
Probably. I remember in the book Blackthorne was teaching Toranaga how to dive and he kept belly-flopping until he got it right. I remember that scene well because anyone who's ever belly-flopped knows how painful ( 😵 ) it is to do it once let alone do it multiple times as Toranaga did. It's a shame that was portrayed in the TV show because you really got a sense of Toranaga's perseverance and desire to learn as well as the bond emerging between these two.
He "knew" how to dive already- he wanted him to "bathe" as his smell was still not addressed especially now that he has a title of imnportance - and also maybe now a bit tired before the "race" to shore... Loving this series!!
I caught the bathing part as well and was cackling as he dove in over and over. I didn’t think about the fact of his new title being the reason why, just that the smell was terrible for them, hahaha! That said, his dive was more of a belly flop even after that, so I wonder if it wasn’t like 3-fold for him to learn, bathe John, and tire him out.
Technically, this isn't true? The scene goes a bit differently in the book, but even in just watching the show, you can tell Toranaga actually bellyflops slightly when he goes to dive alongside John.
You know when I remember knowing I loved Game of Thrones? It was the scale and the world that sucked me in, but smiling at watching the characters joke around and the writing and realising I was fond of the characters as people is what kept me coming back week after week. At the end of that episode there I realised I was feeling similarly for these characters too
I never watched GoT but I relate. I love a good plot as much as everyone, but ever since I was a child, my real joy has been characters. So this episode was really perfect for me because we got to see more sides of the characters, especially Mariko-sama and John. It's so good.
Marikos husband, in my opinion isn’t dead. They didn’t show his death on screen and most of the time when that happens they’ll pop up when you least expect it.
i also saw a scene in Anna Sawai’s interview with Jimmy Kimmel and it was a scene that hasn’t been shown yet and it looks like her husband who is firing the arrow.
everyone in japan learnt how to use a spear/glaive, men and women. Mariko using a glaive during a moment like this would be very accurate. whether she would win or not? different question
Actually Stephen. However, I wonder whether Mariko received further training as a onna-musha (female warrior), or as a Besshikime (female guard) as part of her service to Lord Toranaga.
Those four regents are definitely not allies. Remember, the Taiko chose them specifically because they all hated each other and did not get along, to maintain a political impasse until the Heir came of age. They only recently united on this one issue of distrust of Toranaga's motives because of his strategic family marriages making him more powerful, so now they're united in seeing him as a threat. But in all other matters they are not allies and do not get along.
They don't need to rip out the pages because Blackthorn already revealed the secret that the Portuguese were basing out of Macao. So the reason for keeping it secret were no longer an issue
HATAMOTO, no small title to be given, especially to a Gai-Jin. Toranaga is quickly warming up to Blackthorne, though when he said "Unless I Win" in the garden, you could see Toranaga was already finding him intriguing. Can't wait for the next episode. Great reaction, as always.
Blackthorn should actually feel at home witnessing the court intrigue going on in Japan 😂. After all, England had recently just emerged from the War of the Roses which had much the same ingredients: powerful lords switching sides multiple times like the Earl of Warwick and Baron Stanley, hostage taking, underage heirs being fought over by supposed protectors/regents and then getting "disappeared" (the Princes in the Tower) etc. Heck, he even named his son Tudor after the line that probably wouldn't have come to power if a certain faction hadn't switched sides _mid-battle_ at Bostworth Field (and *spoiler alert:* will also happen at Sekigahara 😛).
You only do seppuku if you're defeated or disgraced, and Buntaro was honored by his liege lord and as of yet undefeated, which is a cool detail :) so he keeps fighting.
Episode 3 was so good and that whole mutual respect between Hiroyuki's character and Cosmo's character was perfectly established by the end of this episode as a setup to the next chapter.
Yabushige is played by Tadanobu Asano, who's a BIG DEAL in his native Japan, starring in the likes of Ichi the Killer and Zatoichi, and has in recent years managed to form himself a MAJOR character acting career in Hollywood too, best known for playing Hogun in the Thor movies, as well as the villain in the Keanu Reeves 47 Ronin movie, one of the main "antagonists" in Martin Scorsese's Silence and Roland Emmerich's Midway, and even played Raiden in the recent Mortal Kombat movie. He also STARRED as Temujin, the future Genghis Khan, in the masterpiece 2007 historical epic Mongol.
Lesser known fact about feudal Japan suggested momentarily this episode- Men and women both were all by default considered bisexual. One being straight was not the standard exactly. It was always most polite to assume bisexuality first if you didn’t know. No stigma other way. That didn’t really develop until the empire became more global.
Spoiler Alert: Buntaro survives in the book. And his attitude towards Mariko is because she is daughter of a traitor (IIRC) - her father betrayed Taiko (again, if I recall the book correctly) And Fujiko-sama will become Blackthorne concubine (again, iirc)
I like how they show the difference in culture between the quiet and respectful japanese, and bellowing unwashed englishman from Tudor England. The current Monarch being Elizabeth I, who's father was Henry VIII, the king that famously killed and divorced his way through 6 wives to find one that could give him a son (or didnt look like a horse). Very different from Japanese culture...
If they broke the Taiko rules (which each of the Regents had previously agreed to), then their enemies could claim they reneged on their words and thus could be viewed as usurpers - making it easier for their enemies to gather more allies. Remember, all parties are looking for reasons to start a war when they have an advantage (moral or otherwise).
While everyone else is living in medieval Japan, only Blackthorne seems to be living in modern America. He doesn't seem to understand the role he is playing.
Nothing wrong with Buntaro, he is a strict father that hate seeing his son cuddled by his wife, he is a famous soldier and has an appearance that must be held up, and his woman obedient to not let his image be torn, there where strict rules.
Tadanobu Asano aka Yabushige in this series is like Littlefinger haha. youcan check out his films like Ichi The Killer and Electric Dragon 80,000V. he is also the antagonist in Takeshi Kitano's reiteration of Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman
you mean creepy voyeur yabushige was also grim hogun of the warriors three? wonders never cease. and the thor character's name rhymes too. hogun, shogun. 😄
I think I’m the only person struggling to love this show. I love the book and original miniseries so maybe biased. It is missing key story elements like how he actually begins learning to speak Japanese and his friendship with Rodrigues. I think the show is aiming to be truer to the actual historical events rather than just the book which is fair enough but I just love the book so much.
I get what you mean. I too have seen the 1980 miniseries many times, have read the book many times, and right away I was spotting the differences. Anjiro = Ajiro, Yabu = Yabushige; etc etc. It took a bit to accept and get used to it, but I am all in now. And John Rhys-Davies is so much better as Rodrigues than this new guy.
Anyone read the servant empire series remember the name bunto a certain character that acted the same wonder if his character is taken from that book Japanese styled ppl too
A lot of the roles of females have been overlooked; I’m assuming due to modern sensibilities. Blackthorne’s reluctance to bathe is shown, but not his acquiescence and enjoyment of being bathed and dressed by lovely Japanese women every day. The influence of the various courtesans has also been downplayed so far. Of course Mariko fights. She isn’t a servant, but a Samarai like her husband. Female Samarai can also commit seppuku by cutting their throat instead of disembowlment.
It's quite surprising but there are quite a few activities that require you to have a head on your shoulders. It would be quite inconvenient to be decapitated.

Toronaga is master of illusions.. Even Oshido cant keep up and the costume design, fantastic!!! Except for John's bikini bottom of course
he is the master of tricks
Favorite torch shot is the Fire Wyrm coming down from the mountain before the climactic battle in the Thirteenth Warrior.
You only do seppuku if you're defeated or disgraced, and Buntaro was honored by his liege lord and as of yet undefeated, which is a cool detail :) so he keeps fighting.
I feel like the translation lady and blackthorne are going to fall in love
Episode 3 was so good and that whole mutual respect between Hiroyuki's character and Cosmo's character was perfectly established by the end of this episode as a setup to the next chapter.
A stunt double to dive in the water? Lol John kills me sometimes
😂 @14:58 Blackthorn claimed his children are Tudor and Lisbeth! (That's just Queen Elizabeth I.)
Loving this these reactions, keep them coming guys.
Btw thought I saw you on sunny Greg.
Great Reaction! This show is so great! 👍 🗡️
The female assassin was fantastic!
RR John's enthusiasm for the show makes the reacts worth it even more
Lesser known fact about feudal Japan suggested momentarily this episode-
Men and women both were all by default considered bisexual. One being straight was not the standard exactly. It was always most polite to assume bisexuality first if you didn’t know. No stigma other way. That didn’t really develop until the empire became more global.
Spoiler Alert:
Buntaro survives in the book. And his attitude towards Mariko is because she is daughter of a traitor (IIRC) - her father betrayed Taiko (again, if I recall the book correctly)
And Fujiko-sama will become Blackthorne concubine (again, iirc)
Damn, I hope he gets a good character arc cuz he’s one hell of a warrior
I can't stand him...
Best show out currently!
This and Master's of the Air
The ones who Live.. was amazing too
“Hows your mother?”
“Dead”
“Aw..”
This show is cinema
I like how they show the difference in culture between the quiet and respectful japanese, and bellowing unwashed englishman from Tudor England. The current Monarch being Elizabeth I, who's father was Henry VIII, the king that famously killed and divorced his way through 6 wives to find one that could give him a son (or didnt look like a horse). Very different from Japanese culture...
This episode was phenomenal
That shogun actor is also the badass scorpion character of mortal combat
He tired Blackthorne out diving again and again before the race xD 42069 IQ move.
While also getting him to bathe, truly one of the strategists of all time
28:31 Can someone explain why it matters that Taranaga resigned from the council? What's forcing the council to follow Taiko's rules?
Bureaucracy, of course they can get around it but the Bureaucracy will slow it down buying Toranaga time
If they broke the Taiko rules (which each of the Regents had previously agreed to), then their enemies could claim they reneged on their words and thus could be viewed as usurpers - making it easier for their enemies to gather more allies. Remember, all parties are looking for reasons to start a war when they have an advantage (moral or otherwise).
While everyone else is living in medieval Japan, only Blackthorne seems to be living in modern America. He doesn't seem to understand the role he is playing.
at the end...Reminds me of "Dread Pirate Roberts" - Most likely kill you in the morning... (taking long time to translate the journals)
Best show of 2024
Nothing wrong with Buntaro, he is a strict father that hate seeing his son cuddled by his wife, he is a famous soldier and has an appearance that must be held up, and his woman obedient to not let his image be torn, there where strict rules.
Favorite carrying fire shot: Apocolypto, when Jagures Paw is being chased in the jungle at night.
Bandits be catching stray bullets in this show 😂
12:20
and the man was being polite.
he would have been 300'd right there.
"THIS! IS! JAPAN!" _SHHHNK!_
Ok, it is done. Rodríguez is, with Iñigo de Montoya and Maximus, the coolest Spaniard character ever to be depicted on screen.
Asano's character(Yabushige) is like Bronn from GOT
you mean creepy voyeur yabushige was also grim hogun of the warriors three? wonders never cease. and the thor character's name rhymes too. hogun, shogun.
Speaking as someone who has niether read the book or seen the mini series, this is like texas BBQ to us. We are in Awe.
Lol once i seen him i was like thats the dude who called cate blanchett a evil demoness
LETS GO LOVE YALL
Moves and countermoves, guys. Ishido will make another chess move. But his fate……hmm? Wait & see.
Why do they mess with the transparency in every other shot?
9:45 he knows blackthorne is still alive because he literally ordered his rescue lol? You guys reacted to the episode like a day ago 😂
Yo bros
The translator..
Better in Shogun or Monarch?
ReelRejects, have you seen the 1980 series?
My issue is we didn't see the guy die he just was pushed back into the alley.....
It's interesting that we don't see Baruto's death though.
Anyone read the servant empire series remember the name bunto a certain character that acted the same wonder if his character is taken from that book Japanese styled ppl too
We didn’t see the husband actually die, who thinks his coming back?
A lot of the roles of females have been overlooked; I’m assuming due to modern sensibilities. Blackthorne’s reluctance to bathe is shown, but not his acquiescence and enjoyment of being bathed and dressed by lovely Japanese women every day. The influence of the various courtesans has also been downplayed so far.
Of course Mariko fights. She isn’t a servant, but a Samarai like her husband. Female Samarai can also commit seppuku by cutting their throat instead of disembowlment.
Is this on Netflix
FX and hulu
I know it's cliche but I think Mariko's husband is alive because he was not seen being killed 😁
Please let the episodes of this Wonderful show arrive faster pleassssseeeee?
They're all in the same castle, Osaka castle. Im sure what happens there everyone would talk about it. No need for spies.
Paper walls don’t invite privacy
@@plan_r4005 not to mention all the dead bodies and needing a doctor for John
Hey remember Reel Rejects basically racist review of Glory. They still haven't issued an apology.
i mean fire and forest scene may be goes to RRR not the stunts just the scene
It's quite surprising but there are quite a few activities that require you to have a head on your shoulders. It would be quite inconvenient to be decapitated.
