The modern Lionel engine and freight cars are impressive. My Dad built a layout with 2 tiers above its street level with lumber and colored cement over them for a mountain effect. I did not become a model railroader but have taken AMTRAK trips through the mountains out West. It was in our basement built a little at a time from around 1957 through 1967. I also like your layout. From St. Louis
I can't thank you enough for posting this. I have Lionel trestle for my 12x10 layout (which I am in the process of laying out) and intend to run an elevated track with a Carrera digital slot car track running on the table below. I am still looking for layout ideas and that wood you used gave me a GREAT inexpensive idea as how to get the Menards train depot that I have up to the train track. Again I cant thank you enough for posting this.
Thanks for sharing your well designed layout. I love the interest that reverse loops creat by their very design. I have two levels of reversing loops on my layout. And I think you will find that once you get your scenery completed, the loops will become even more interesting and important to you layout. I also am impressed that you put an access opening in the center for service. Congratulations on a beautiful train installation. Happy railing!
That is complex as hell, but it is exceptionally good at maximizing your play value for a small space. Not all that much bigger than a sofa. I love the peek-a-boo hole in the middle for accessing derailments.
Fantastic O, I love Lionel, great job.have my dads set when he was a kid and added to it with my boys and love to set it up and let 3 trains run at once. The grandkids are mezmarized just like maws when they used to watch my grandfather run his.
Thanks for running the camera by following the train through the whole course of the track. So in general you have a single long line all weaved inside itself with a turn around loop on either end. Nice!
Nice layout that reminded me of something I did about the same size and same track. In my retirement about 10 years ago I pulled out a lot of old Lionel stuff to put together a 12' by 9.5' lay out. At first I used all old Lionel 0 gauge track and then switched to K-Line snap track which gives me a similar appearance. I did use 042 for the outer loop and was going for 054 but snap track is hard to find now. I even half an upper platform like this setup to run a set. I have no reverse loops because of lack of room (too many old accessories). Continue the good work.
Thank you very much! That layout sounds nice! Too bad they don't make that K-Line snap track anymore - it is really good looking 3 rail track! Thanks again for the comment!
Love the set, but I like the scenery myself to enhance the experience. That said, my father was more in to the mechanics of the hobby, just like this, so it was a chance for us to collaborate on a project together, dad on the track me on the scenery. God bless dad! (This so reminds me of him, thank you)!
Very very cool. I have a fair size layout in half of my garage and where you cut your “man hole” I have built a NASCAR slot car track with the RR crossing. It works great for the train but the cars seem to crash there a lot. A good time is always had by all, Cheers!
That's a Beautiful layout! One thing that I noticed , as a neewbie; it's rare, I've noticed is the cost of the layout, is never discussed. I guess it falls under the category; if you have to ask, then maybe another hobby is what you should think about. It's really and truly a wonderful hobby to have though.
All coming soon just getting started on this layout now that the layout is up-and-running I can start modeling scenes and get my superstreets up and running to I also have some action and animated toys to get installed to will post more videos of my progress
Mike and Mark - It might be a good idea to cover the crawl space with something that looks like the ground and you would be able to just lift it up when you want go get to that area to work. You can put some odds and ends on it like trees bushes, etc. In the 50's and 60's I had a 4 x 8 board which was popular at the time. I had one passenger train and one freight train. I was addicted to it all and was always building something. I see that the newer tracks are more realistic. I remember the large transformer that you use. It was the largest that Lionel made at the time. The volt and amp meters are a nice addition. I remember when Lionel first came out with Magni-Traction which kept the engine from falling off the tracks at made it possible to pull more cars and go up hills. It was a big selling point. Are you going to fancy the system up with scenery and lights? I had all sorts of lights and goodies.
This is really well done. I have the same 12’ x 8’ space and would love to see your track plan. Please share if possible and thanks so much for posting.
I like it too. Could I get the track plan too? It would be perfect for my new train room space if you’d be willing to share. Thank you for sharing this video. It’s great! I’m inspired. Send details to mattingly@rogers.com please and thank you.
A 4 % grade requires the track rise about 1 inch in 2 feet. To achieve the 5 3/4 inch vertical clearance must have 12 feet of track. Layout looks really nice and runs great.
Does not appear those 031 curves will support an articulated. For a small space, the layout crams a lot of tech and terrain into a small space. Well done.
Love the layout, and especially your control center. Can you tell me where to find voltage and amperage meters like those you are using? Thanks so much for posting this!
Thanks for all the positive comments glad to see that everyone likes it sounds like I'm going in the right direction lots more to add and do will post videos of my progress thanks to everyone for the support
I really like this layout , and would like to use it,in my own built for I made the mistake and put the train up around the tree for Christmas for the grandkids, I did a ho when I was younger and one in the 90s is there a lay out plan what track I need. Thanks
Did you hear the chuff & whistle on that Big Boy? Ha ha. Yep, for realistic purposes, it is good enough for me 😁 Thank you for being happy that I'm happy 🚂
love this layout, Mark. I’ve been locked in analysis paralysis in determining my layout. Wanting to do it once and right. So I hope it’s okay that I am imitating this layout somewhat. Would you mind telling me the size of the man hole?
The layout is roughly 8x12 the ends are 4 ' the sides are 3' wide. So the hole is roughly 2'x4' but not exactly I had to cheat it here and there to get it on there
Happy 1 year to this post. Brilliant layout. How wide are the turns that you ran with that big boy, looks like less than 072. I want to imitate this when I make mine. Great work, and thanks for sharing.

mark Enbicott Looking forward to seeing the completed project. After 20 some years away from the hobby I’m going to finally build a good sized layout in my basement with Lionel Super ‘O’. Construction starts right after the New Year ! Have a great New Year.
Full focus on trains and the design and not too much landscaping, I love it, thanks for sharing!!
Landscaping coming soon
This is one awesome track plan with all K-Line switches and tracks. Thank you for sharing this incredible layout / platform with us! Amazing!!!

Wow! This is a fantastic little layout, very clever track plan.
Glad you like it! Thanks!
pretty impressive.. I like the fact that you can change directions and basically double the track plan..nicely done in this size foot print.
Really great multi train running and a clever design of a small space layout. Like you say on the video - a really cool control panel too.
very nice layout. i really like seeing multiple trains going at the same time.

Outstanding thoroughly enjoyed this well done layout and video. Thanks for sharing.
Love the way locos and rolling stock handle such tight curves with ease nice layout 👍
027 is amazing!
A very nice layout;one of the tunnel entrances reminds me of the East portal entrance to the Hoosac Tunnel up in Florida, Mass.Keep up the good work!
LOVE seeing the K-Line Shadow Rail track! It looks GREAT !! Very nice, clean layout & control panel !! Nice job.
I agree! I really like the looks of that track!
Saw their videos last week and was impressed. Nice seeing some close up views and getting the audio comments.
Thanks for running the camera by following the train through the whole course of the track. So in general you have a single long line all weaved inside itself with a turn around loop on either end. Nice!
Right! Plus they have three separate loops to easily run three trains at once.

Are there any updates to this layout, especially the wiring diagram?
I am a bit surprised that the Big steamer could make those corners.
It seems like that loco would have a larger minimum turn radius.
It is the Lionel version of the Big Boy with TMCC and it has a minimum radius of 031
