I had a teacher in the 6th grade who was the greatest educator I've ever met. I knew from our first meeting that he was a straight shooter and he saw the spark in my eye when I was entertaining people. He used to let me draw funny comic strips on the back of my homework, which pushed me to actually take initiative. Counselors, therapists, no one could understand why Christopher had no drive, no academic interest, and dismal respect for authority. Mr. Ramsey spoke to me for 20 minutes and had me all figured out. There's people out there like him who remind me of Robin's characters. People who inspire me to be fearless. Those people rarely get to be as famous as Robin Williams, but to the ones they affect, they're superheroes
I hope you reached out to your teacher. Mine where defeating and never gave me an opportunity although, I know what I was worth...I did not do everything I believed in. I was anchored with appearance, when all I wanted was good. I hope you lived and gave back to the world.
I really wished my education was like this - to feel alive, to feel worthy - all I learned at school is follow orders and memorise things that never helped me deal wth real life.
i learned science, does my job require it no, but i learned the basics in case i go into those fields, I also unlike christians, learned evolution properly. if school taught me taxes etc, id be a dumbass going to church on sundays wasting time and money
My favorite teacher was my shop teacher, he taught me more about life and being a good person in the few years I knew him than the lot of all the other teachers I had in 12 years. Yes there were a few others who took their job seriously but most came to collect a pay check. Thanks Mr Barbera for showing me that helping others would only increase my ability and foster those with less knowledge and impact them with what little I had to give. I am forever grateful for your time and effort in showing me that I was worth teaching when others saw a lost cause I will never forget that.
Did you at least, know him? If you did, I bow to your honesty. If you didn't, you must have some shity family members. Personally, I thought he was a genius. But if he were to die, instead of, say, my grandson ....... well there is no comparison.
I'm so thankful I had amazing teachers like this. For the teachers that are watching thank you for educating our future, now let's work on taking proper care of our educators!
John Keating : "Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all." This is no longer taught anywhere, today our children learn to be nice obedient consumers, no one dares to think for themselves.
With everything I've watched with Robin Williams. I've seen he's excellents in not only comedy but drama and thriller. I miss him so much. If any teacher could be so passionate as he. I think our education would be more attentive. I want to re-watch it.
I think Keating makes an interesting point here. Can the value in a poem be measured by the metrics defined by Dr Pritchard? Alternatively, is poem's value greater than the sum of its parts? If so, a linear measurement system like the one he describes will fail because some poems that score poorly on one or more metrics may in fact hold enormous value. I'm reminded of Picasso who famously said: "It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child." Should we teach our youth to walk in the footprints of the greats who preceded them and hope that those who have sufficient passion for the topic to take it up as a career will still have enough courage and creativity left break out of the mold? Is everyone able to break away from the mold? The answer to that is probably no - at least not in the fashion that the likes of Picasso achieved since that requires genius. Schopenhauer best defined genius in his quote: "Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see." A poem written by a talented poet will probably measure quite well against Pritchard's metrics. A poem written by a genius will fail in one or more of Pritchard's metrics but will be so revolutionary and powerful in its method of expression that it'll give birth to a whole new genre. Given the extreme rarity of geniuses (in the true sense of the word rather than the sense used - or misused - by the modern media), teaching Pritchard's rules will do little harm. Just make sure that the students are also enjoying the poetry and make the poem come to life for them (as Keating tried to do). If a poetry teacher is sufficiently inspirational that his/her students are still reading poetry in their own private capacity many years after having graduated from the class, then that teacher will be able to rank themselves at the very peak of their profession.
There was only one Robin Williams. He came across the Hollywood sky like a meteor, and then was gone. "Good Will Hunting" showed us all that he was. For us Vietnam veterans, his "Good Morning Vietnam" told the story of what a mess that was. The great ones come and go too quickly. Robin Williams was a Great One!
I was very lucky and had some wonderful teachers in middle school and high school. Some sucked but enough of the really good ones to make a difference.
Jesus, when I watch this movie I realise how useless 'secondary' education is largely to most kids. I was bored shitless all day at school, and was so depressed by the end? I was just numb and confused. English and music where the only subjects that did ANYTHING for me, the rest? I can honestly say, a huge waste of time. People shouldn't feel that way about their education. Bored? Kids won't learn anything under those conditions.
I fucking loved english class, i'd get into epic debates with my teacher on the meaning of poetry and subtext of novels and all that. But at the same time, i loved physics, finding out how the world works, playing with lasers and shit. Yeah there were some dud classes, but mostly they were due to dud teachers.
The atmosphere created at that school by Mr Nolan and the other staff at that boarding school is downright dark and miserable. You are thought to fear perusing your ambitions, as your future has been already decided for you. No wonder one of the students ended his life. Mr Keating provides a slimmer of light in all that darkness.
He was write about the poetry textbook. You can no less teach poetry than you can creative writing...the world misses him every day...Captain my Captain...
This movie is just fantastic and he was an amazing actor,it is a shame that his demons took him away. The august(smiling clown) wear a smile to hide his pain and sorrow.
2:05 "Now when you read, don't just consider what the author thinks, consider what you think." Err, emm, that would have been nice if you didn't just eighty-six the entire introduction (1:07). I guess Dr. J. Evans Pritchard, Ph.D, doesn't get our consideration, thanks to Mr Keating.
The movie overall is typical Hollywood subversive nonsense ... "feels" over "reals" ... poetry over science ... emotion over reason ... that sort of thing. The normie summary of the movie can be found here: ruclips.net/video/1jy6Ma5QyAk/видео.html
Rubbish history lesson if they teach them about Abraham Lincoln and don't bother to mention the two poems that Walt Whitman wrote in honour of Lincoln after his assassination.
You’re wrong. This movie is a very clear symbol of private schools, like Eton, where right wing adults are raised eg. David Cameron, Boris Johnson, George Osbourne etc. It is set in an all boys school in a time where there were very little ethnic minority students. Many leftists will recognise this as a brilliant opposition to private schools and an opposition of the type of students they often create.

So true for so many people. Be yourself there's no one else more worth living for than you!
Truth!!!
True. Being human is a gift - only if you get teachers who make you feel alive.
i learned science, does my job require it no, but i learned the basics in case i go into those fields, I also unlike christians, learned evolution properly. if school taught me taxes etc, id be a dumbass going to church on sundays wasting time and money
True.
"It's not the bible, your not going to go to hell for this" - The best line I've ever heard.
Here’s to Mr. Keeting and all the other amazing teachers out there mistreated for their individualism.
thanks❤
Oh Captain, my Captain!
We miss you!
RIP and long live Robin Williams (July 21, 1951 - August 11, 2014), aged 63
You will always be remembered as a legend.

Nothing is so strong and honorable as respect that's earned and returned .
I miss this man more than most of my own family.

I had 1 teacher that was in the same Keating caliber. He was the one who helped make high school enjoyable and helped me form my philosophy on life.
I saw this & I must say,the line he says about looking at things differently, it's got to be one of the BEST things I've heard!
There were less than a hand full of teachers like him but most of us had at least one you remember.
I was very Fortunate
My English Teacher in
High School 1973-1976

This movie is an inspiration for all poets
John Keating : "Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all."
This is no longer taught anywhere, today our children learn to be nice obedient consumers, no one dares to think for themselves.
The late Robin Williams portrayed the greatest teacher of all.
RIP
I seriously wish we had teachers like this. Maybe i would have actually learned something.
My Dear God - - - I hope that Robin knew in his heart how much he will always be loved
Miss him so much... Thanks for being a part of my life Robin
I wish I had a teacher like this.
"Rip and tear, until it is done" -Mr Keating, probably
9 years the world lost the amazingly talented Robin Williams❤️❤️
July 21st 1951 - August 11th 2014
The best movie I ever seen in my whole life.
It would be so nice if my students had memories of me teaching like Mr. Keating.
With everything I've watched with Robin Williams. I've seen he's excellents in not only comedy but drama and thriller. I miss him so much. If any teacher could be so passionate as he. I think our education would be more attentive. I want to re-watch it.

I wish I had a teacher like Mr Keating.

The football scene, is it deleted scene? It's good. :)
It has been a while since I've seen this movie, so I can't say with conviction, but I believe this made the final cut.
This was in the movie.
