    I've been building my dream home and homestead off scratch on 18 acres of forested land in Canada Welcome to my home build and my desire to become more self sufficient!
    This week I got ready for my biggest inspection yet. All of my rough ins and my framing inspection. Everything seemed to go wrong with my plumbing ABS test. And then the inspection happened. I'm so disappointed and hurt and I'm not sure where to move from here.

    Do not take it personally.I know that's hard to do but being someone who works with inspectors everyday there are inspectors out there that let the authority go to their head.Ive been a carpenter for 30 yrs and I can tell you everything you are doing is great!Just keep in mind to try to not let any emotions show with the next inspector.Just act as though you've been doing it for yrs.Confidence goes a long way when they interact.Your home is going to beautiful and filled with love when complete.Your crushing it!keep up the great work

    I was working on a renovation of a 100 year old house and did a bathroom remodel (involved removing a wall, moving the door, and moving plumbing, electrical, so it was not trivial). I was not doing the work myself but was acting as a GC to coordinate the various trades people (framing, electrical, plumbing, drywall, etc.) The plumber had cut holes in the joists under the floor in order to get the bathtub drain pipe over to the stack. He had cut through 8 joists in a row and in the wrong location on 5 of them. The building inspector said he was failing the inspection and that I would need to get a structural engineer involved. I just about had a STROKE and immediately felt sick to my stomach. I actually felt dizzy and thought I might pass out, no kidding. I had visions of many thousands of dollars and months to correct a serious structural issue. The next 3 weeks were extremely stressful because I was on a very tight deadline with people expecting to move in and I had no idea how to even contact a structural engineer, etc. Fortunately someone referred me to a "retired" structural engineer who was extremely competent and wrote a professionally stamped set of instructions (1.2.3, etc) to implement the fix. The fix involved angle iron (I never even knew what that was until this incident), drilling holes in very specific locations on the angle iron, using very specific screws and installing it in a very specific manner. In total this involved, a structural engineer, welders and my framing contractor who installed all of this. I was so very relieved when the inspection finally passed 3 weeks later. Later, the plumbing company (a well-known and respected company) also reimbursed me for the cost of the structural engineer, the welding and installation because it was (obviously) their fault. But I still had other costs due to the project going almost one month over the deadline that they did not reimburse me for. But looking back, I have to say I did learn a lot during this process. However, it was not a fun way to learn. I saw someone's suggestion to you about getting some help from an experienced contractor to navigate through these particular issues. I think that is a good idea. It would be good to have someone who has been through this before and it can also be a help psychologically to help remove some of the stress. If possible, maybe they can even be present during the next inspection. It is unfortunate, but you may have one of those horrible inspectors that just like to make things difficult for people. Some inspectors just get off on the power trip thing. This is by far the longest You Tube comment I have ever made, lol. Good luck, you can get through this Biata! Someday all this will be in the rearview mirror.

    As a former Building / Plumbing Inspector in the GTA and retired home designer for 22 years I would recommend not getting into complaint / challenging the inspection with the Chief Building Official. There are some inspectors that I have both worked with and dealt with that are just prkx and with no real self-fulfillment in sight try to gain an upper hand on people who are not fully familiar with the Building Code. Rather, try obtain the enlistment of a local builder / contractor who is familiar with the local inspectors who can guide you through correction of the deficiencies. What you can do (and is required under the Building Code Act) is to ask for the deficiencies listed in writing with appropriate code references. Remain non-confrontational and professional. Otherwise they will feel they have won! Keep up the good work and don't get discouraged.

    • @SimpleLivingwithBiata
      @SimpleLivingwithBiata  Месяц назад +12

      I actually agree in not challenging the deficiencies and just getting them done. BUT, where I’m stuck is the derogatory comment and pushing to have a different inspector on my file.

    • @CharterRights
      @CharterRights Месяц назад +6

      @@SimpleLivingwithBiata Unfortunately the path to have a different inspector may lead to more heartache. These people are in tight with each other and the next one might be tougher and more demeaning than the first one. By falling into the trap of confrontation the original inspector will claim victory and know that he can get under your skin - whether they are technical issues or not. I used a much different "old timer" way of inspection by showing builders - especially homeowner builders - how to take the most simple path to meet compliance. Most inspectors today have no practical experience and have no idea why the code requirement is there in the first place. I too would take issue with many of the things they asked for and rather than argue with them, I would ask them to show me the Building Code reference that applies to each infraction. Proof is in the putting. When they prove themselves wrong they will retreat and rethink when and how they challenge you the next time.

      @@SimpleLivingwithBiata The inspectors work with the builders/contractors to gain work. They discourage DYI. It's lucrative "politics". Trust me I know. Kick backs and friendships is a thing. It's sad but true. Some are just downright shady. Hire someone to get the issues and address them. IF you try to fix them yourself 99% of the time you'll get one right and two wrong and never get anywhere with them. It's like a courtroom, hire a lawyer regardless of whether or not you could probably do a better job than them or even need them, it helps that "economy", it's weird but humans are weird. IF you don't hire a lawyer the judge will hold it against you. I believe the term is being a "fool". Hope that all makes sense.

    Inspections are done to make sure everything is done according to code, you know that, so if there are issues you have to correct, add, change, whatever it is, they are not mistakes, just issues that you have to correct to make your house perfect. If you were perfect or we all did our work perfectly we would not need inspectors. What you have completed is amazing, learn as you build, very well done, I’m impressed, you can be very proud of what you have accomplished. Three cheers so far ‼️❤️

    I think you are incredible. Wha you are doing and have already done, I thinke there are very few men who would even try this unless they had some trade. It sucks that you are feeling less than. It says more about the inspector/s than you. You just have to keep plugging along. After what you have already acheived you can jump thru any hoop. In the end you will have a wonderful home built to house your family. You should be very proud of yourself, and what an example to your daughter.

    Biata, like a few other people have said, don't take it personally. I have failed inspections before and yes it sucks, but I moved past it. When I installed my manifold system, the code read I could leave the manifold with a 3/8 inch line and go directly to each water fixture. Well, the county I live in didn't like that and made me redo it with 1/2 until I was at the fixture sight. I even showed them the could in writing, and it didn't help. There is always going to be someone out there who thinks they have to be right because they are in a position of power. So pick up the bootstraps and get back to it. You're too intelligent and hardworking. Don't let them get the best of you. Always take a step back and look at everything you have accomplished.
    Now, let me help you with the pressure test. This is what I did. I extended the pipe longer than I needed and then glued a cap on. After the test was completed, I cut the pipe to size.

Truly dislike knowing there are males out there with let’s just say egos. I don’t get virtual inspections at all. There is no opportunity for back and forth human connection. No chance to let slide some things that truly do not matter but a written book says they do. I’d request a written list of any non pass items. You got this! I know you do. I have watched all of your build and have totally enjoyed it. Don’t let an a hole get you down. The inspectors will always give a homeowner builder a hard time because they think they are better than you. If you have his derogatory comments on film I think you should take that to your local building department. They are the ones that hire the inspector and you should no way have to deal with that. It is always hard to pass on the first inspection of that type. SO KEEP YOUR HEAD UP BECAUSE YOU ROCK.
    Make them give you a detailed list of the failed items with the code number. Put the list on the wall like you do your plywood list and then just do one thing at a time and mark it off you will be surprised how quickly you will get through it.
    HANG IN THERE AND KEEP THE FAITH.
