You are a ROCK STAR in my book! I've done a lot of data merge in my long career, but never before with InDesign, and finding the right process for 3-up labels was a headache until I found your video. Clear, concise, perfect! Thanks!
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it!
Ugh I admire you for your patience????? I started mail merging 20 years ago with relatively hardly any glitches in Microsoft products. InDesign and Avery should have this seamlessly figured out by now. I am so tired of wasting my time trying to figure out Indesign.
Yes, I used to love the Microsoft products for mail merge, but now I'm totally an InDesign convert for that! Once you do it a few times, it gets easier. It would be nice if Avery and InDesign got together on it, though!
Was having a hell of a time figuring this out and Adobe's help was awful. This got me up to speed quickly. Thanks!
You're welcome - and thank you so much!!
Thank you so much! You do an excellent job of explaining a left-brained process to this right-brained thinker - much appreciated!
You're welcome 😊 And thank you so much!!
Thanks you! We were having the biggest problem until you said to start a new document and NOT use the Avery template. As soon as we did, BAM! Worked like a charm. Your the starr.
You're welcome! 😊 I'm so glad it helped! Yes, it's weird that the Avery template causes it not to work!
Thank you for this video! First time using InDesign to make attendee badges from an Avery template. I was so lost on how to merge multiple records on a single page. This video helped me figure it out and I just wanted to share my gratitude. THANK YOU
Awesome; I'm so glad the video helped!!
Yes this video was awesome. I'm pretty sure that there aren't enough out there on data merge and it's other uses (other than mailing lists)
Thank you! I know I had a hard time researching it!
This was so helpful! I was able to use this info to do both nametags and name placards. Thank you!
Yes - if you have more than 30, it should automatically create another page!
Great video! It was so easy to understand, and your skills and sequence make it a no-brainer. I was able to learn Data merge in the few minutes your video took to watch. Thank you!
Thank you so much!!
Thank you for posting this!
You're welcome!!
Perfect, exactly what I was looking for. I've done it in Word before, but I want to generate gallery labels with QR codes from my database, so the helped a lot - thank you.
You're welcome!! The labels with QR codes is a perfect application for this. :D
Thanks for this video, I’ve never used Data Merge, so it’s good to learn something new with a function that I’m not overly familiar with. I’ve been working on a company catalogue using an imported XML file, which is in some ways similar to this, in that it can speed up the process, but can be fiddly when setting it up.
Very interesting - I might need to learn / make a video on that! Thank you for commenting! :D
I didn’t actually do the coding for the XML file, just imported it, but using XML can import text and graphics, in this case, into a catalogue with a predefined layout. A video on this would be interesting.
@@flytetime7637 Ok! It sounds complicated but I'll see if I can figure it out! Thank you!!
FANTASTIC tutorial! Thank you!
You're welcome!! And thank you!
This worked great, thank you so much! One thing I wanted to add is that if you have a column of data that is not filled for every cell (i.e. maybe you have a second address column for Suite #s and only a few companies have this info), it gave me an error notification. So, I just added any Suite info with the other address column and it imported into InDesign fine.
You're welcome - I'm so glad it helped!! That is good info about the unfilled data - thank you!
THANK YOU! This just saved me so much time.
You're welcome! I'm so happy to hear that!
Thank you! This was an amazing tutorial.
Thank you so much!!
You nailed it on the head with regards to Avery templates. You have to delete the template layer that came with the templates and it works! It took me frustrating hours to figure that one out. I think this is some kind of not fully developed feature. Multiple records merge prefers to have a single layer.
That's good to know!! Thank you so much!
This just saved my morning! I was getting one per page and I was stumped. I had disabled my template layer, but deleting the layer made it work. Thanks!
Thank you for this comment, I thought I was going nuts!
nice way to teach graphics.thankx
Thank you!!
Thank you for your tutorial. I have one mishap needing your clarity... When the Create Merged Document portion, my computer doesn't allow me to select multiple records.... how do I change that? From only allowing a single....
I'm thinking you might have things set up where only one record fits on each page. InDesign can automatically try to put more on each page, but only if they fit.
This was sooooooo helpful. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome 😊 and thank you!!
Thank you so much for this! I'm trying to do small stickers for a venue seating. Hence I want "Row 1" on one row, and "Seat 1" on the next. And then increase from there. When I do this, after copying your example on the video, I get the result "Row 1;Seat 1" and can't formate them as separate rows on the sticker. What am I missing here? Again, thanks so much!
Hmm, I'm not sure. All I did to get to the next line was hit Return on the keyboard, then enter the record. ruclips.net/video/sXIZroAKitE/видео.html
Thanks Anne! I used this method for images. Do you know if there’s any way to update the document without re-merging it? It’s basically a business card directory and every year members change but I need to keep the cover and other pages the same each year. I don’t want to have to copy and paste all the unchanged pages, if that makes sense.
If there is a way, I haven't figured it out. I have to make a new re-merged document every time I want to update something. :/ So that kind of stinks!
Graphic Design How To We can only hope for an update! 😊
@@laurad.1178 yes!! :D
for some reason its only creating a document with the first address. how do I get it so the whole page has all the addresses on it?
Can you let me know at what minute and second you start having trouble (in the video)?
Very helpful! Do you know if there is a way to do a multi record mail merge with other data on the document? I'm trying to do a postcard style mail merge, but the same address is showing up.
Yes - you'll need to add columns for the other info, then call each column in the document. This other video might help: ruclips.net/video/sX1JQ39c3DI/видео.html
@@GDHT Thank you so much!! This is VERY helpful!!
Thank you....good solution to import images
You're welcome!
Thanks

Great video!! Very clear and concise. Have never worked with Data Merge but have a project that this would be awesome to incorporate. I did it step by step and am creating 4"x2" mailing labels by Avery (8163) and created a new document. I'm not sure what's going on because for my test set up, I have 10 names/addresses in my Excel doc but when I preview the merge, I only get one column for a total of 5 labels.
Thank you - I'm glad it was helpful! It sounds like your text box might be too wide, so Indesign can only fit 1 column. If it's even .001" too wide, it will cut it down to one column.
Hello, Thank you so much for your video! I am creating stickers for wedding invitations and i was wondering how can you save each sticker individually on a PDF to be best for printing, and not all together? Thank you
I have another video that shows how to put each label on an individual page: ruclips.net/video/sX1JQ39c3DI/видео.html
@@GDHT thank youu very much!!! ❤️🙏🏼

Thank you ♥️
You're welcome!!
this is very useful!
Thank you - I'm so glad it was helpful!
Hmmm... I've saved my excel files as a CSV 3 different ways & cannot get IND to recognize. I'm on a PC though. I did a save as from excel. I did an export. I copied and pasted the data from a downloaded doc to a new one. Nothing works.
I ended up having to upload the excel to google sheets and then downloaded it & THAT worked. To get all my labels to merge & NOT be on separate sheets tho, selecting "multiple records wasn't enough. I got one on each page. I had to change the settings in options to "use existing", I think it was. I wish I jotted notes as I went along!
I was going to suggest switching to Google sheets (I don't actually have Excel so I can't test it there). And that is so weird that 'multiple records' didn't work for you - maybe it's a different version of InDesign or something.
@@GDHT Yep that's what did it. It's been tough learning how to design on a PC. Hadn't touched one since 2003, and even then it was just for email, lol. Anyway - I've figured out I should've done more text formatting first, but at least I got the first lesson done. TY for the vid!
@@lindamaddocks8040 Ok great! Glad it's (sort of) working for you!! :)
I would love for you to make them with Apple Pages as well .. 🙏🏼
I usually stick to the graphic design programs for my channel - I really have no idea how it would work in Apple Pages! Sorry about that.
@@GDHT oopps my error.. I meant to say Apple Numbers (instead of Googlesheets) haha sorry about that .. I don’t use pages for designing either.
Oh that makes more sense!! I would think it would be a very similar process, but I haven't looked into it.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks so much
