What's most remarkable about hanging out with Anthony Boutard besides his passion for food, it's his incredible breadth of knowledge about organic farming. He does everything by hand, and he constantly is learning from his observations and field experiments. As Boutard is readying his corn seeds for planting in this video, he is doing another experiment by separating the 3 different corn varieties onto different plots of land to learn more about their unique characteristics.

I’ve been looking for this information for some time. Considering you posted this video 10 years ago, I find it to be the best I’ve seen. Can’t believe more people haven’t watched and commented. If you’re still online, I’d love to see how you take it from field and the process you use to actually dry it. Thanks!

That was really interesting, near the end, where Anthony mentions the black mark at the base of the kernels is a sign of the ear being mature.

that was one of my favorite things he said too…because they're orange. Of course!

This is what farmer Anthony says, "Yes. Different colors do cross pollinate. The color in the corn kernel varies by variety and landrace. Some have all of the kernels the same color, and others a mixture of kernel colors. People who want to grow corn for seed need to isolate their plants from other types of corn.". ...and thank you!

I'm wondering about the machine Anthony is using to clean the seed corn. Did he get it through Lehman's, as he did the corn sheller? I could use a fanning mill like that to clean up my popcorn before putting it on the market.

Such a great video! I would have loved to see all that information and machines when I was starting to grow corn in 2012

I asked farmer Anthony, and this is what he said, "It is a "corn sheller" manufactured by C.S. Bell.Among other places, they are available through Lehman's."

I was about to ask the same thing. Popping the kernels off by hand is getting old. Thanks for the info.

May I ask if the different color corn cross pollinates? Great video!
