How to make the Clearest Ice. Bottom Up, Directional Freezing.

- I have tried for years to make the clearest cocktail ice. I have tried many methods like top down cooler freezing and molds. This is the best way. It uses the same idea as a $10,000 Clinebell Ice Maker. All you need is water, a cooler, a fish tank pump, and a freezer. Four and a half days later, you have a little chunk of frozen mana from heaven for your cocktails.

Am I missing the ice cutting video? I just looked and didn’t see it posted on your channel. Feed the need!! 😂😂
Thank you thank you thank you! wow. The cutting off the bottom of the cooler - solved all my issues. You sir are a genius and my new hero!
Hahahah. Hardly a hero but certainly obsessed. See you for a live show sometime!!!! Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 6pm pst
Wonderful!!!
Thank you! It was a journey, but this is by far the best ice method. I hope you find success in your clear ice adventure! Cheers!
Any new developments or improvements to this cooler process that we should know about? Got the fan and rack tips down but just curious if something else has been discovered on your end.
I'm doing experiments about temperature right now. I have always put the freezer at the midpoint but I am going to make the next ones at the low and high setting. My New Years resolution is to make more short(ish) videos like this where I do more experiments and ice experiments are my favorite experiments!
Sounds great I'll be watching!
Have you considered putting a wire rack under the bottom of the cooler in the freezer for better airflow??
Infact I did! I haven't updated the video yet. It not only helps with the speed of the freeze but also the shape of the ice. Great Catch! Cheers!
@@DrCush Awesome!! Good to hear that it helps. Thanks for the quick reply
@@biggieb400 no problem! thanks for the reasonable and well crafted question!
Yes I use a crate that elevates my unit
I built a 20 gallon unit that makes a 9" thick by 20" long and 10" wide
Excellent video. Do you have any recommendations for splitting the ice into neat cubes other than using a bread knife and a mallet? Hammering the ice has been inconsistent. Hate ruining a nice block of ice.
I do! This might seem crazy, but I use a band saw... not exactly a normal kitchen appliance, but that is the best way to get perfect sides! I am working on a cutting vid now to update this one. Cheers!
@@DrCush I'm looking at band saws too. I see a few bone cutting saws that butchers use--are those the types of band saws that we can use to cut ice?
@@robert_ash Mine is just a normal bandsaw. It cuts through the ice nicely. The ice almost melts when it hits the blade. I am sure more power would be sufficient, but not necessary. For reference, mine is the WEN 3959 2.5 amp 9 inch bench top. It works perfectly.
@@DrCush Thanks! Gonna check eBay for those
@@DrCush Thank you! I was worried about water rusting the blade and the parts on the saw. Thanks for your information!
Hi! Any progress on the ice cutting update? I would love to see the bandsaw in use. Thanks!
Chris! Absolutely! I am working on the full new video this week. I have a new block waiting to be cut and filmed. On its way! Thank you for the nudge!
@@DrCush Perfect! I just made my first block with this method and I love the ice but hate butchering it! LOL!
Does the water pump freeze too?
If you pull it out at the right time it'll be good. If you forget about it, it will freeze into the block. Same as top down freezing, if you let it sit too long it will freeze too much. But, this method will still be clear if you let it go too long, and the pump will survive at least 10 freezings (that's about how many times I have forgotten about it and frozen it into the block of ice). This method is more forgiving than the top down Coleman cooler method. Let me know if you have any other questions.
