  • It took a while, but DG finally coughed up a complete Giulini box, not before issuing bits of his legacy in the form of a silly "geographical" survey of his output in American and Vienna (but not Berlin or Italy or other places where he made recordings for the label). And then, of course, there's EMI/Warner, which is a stupid story for another time...

I had a buddy in college who was new to classical music and who naturally decided that the first conductor he ever heard was the greatest of all time, and that happened to be Giulini. So at that time he was listening to that elephantine Beethoven 3 by CMG while I was listening to the sharp-as-a-tack and fleet one by Michael Gielen which I preferred and we did not see eye to eye. lol. Not surprisingly he soon found the Carlos Kleiber cult, which was as predictable as it is laughable.

I had the DG Los Angeles box and the EMI Chicago CDs, then I saw that there was also a DG Chicago box. Some of the recordings from Vienna are also in the Michelangeli DG box and I had bought a few individual records. It’s not cheap If we want them all.

You left out DG's "The Art of Carlo Maria Giulini," and, yes, I've got it (along with the Chicago DG box). It may reflect his art, but, as you say of the other minor boxes, not all of it. Wish I had the big DG set, but it costs an arm and a leg now--and I'm too happy with both arms and legs to part with one of each, even for Giulini.

I always loved Giulini's Brahms Sym. 1 with the Philharmonia Orch., the 2 Brahms Piano Concertos with Claudio Arrau and Britten's 4 Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes (Philharmonia).

Dear Dave, Really a very entertaining series on stupid policies of multiple edition of overlapping or remasterd boxes! With regard to Carlo Maria Giulini, we could add a DG 11-CD box Giulini 'in concerto'! I was also lucky enough to get in Belgium (for a reasonable price!) a 64-CD box entitled 'Carlo Maria Giulini 1914-2005' issued in 2013 in South Korea with altogether recordings by 'DG, DECCA, SONY(!) and RCA (sic) in luxurious thick original jackets! Only the operas were missing. More seriously, I think that it would be a better editorial policy to issue first a big box for the passionates amateurs and thereafter, if needed, more 'thematic' boxes for others (i. e. by composers, etc.).

I could buy complete box for 28 € to extint Dodax shop. A few weeks ago I sold two America boxes so I dont have any duplication.

UMG use the same strategy on Abbado before forego the rest of unbox recording and release complete thing with more expensive than even Karajan And will Solti for sure

Also worth mentioning - the "non-geographical" DG Giulini box... "Giulini in Concerto". At least they kept the "Giulini in ..." format. :)
What we have is a potpourri of his recordings from Vienna, Berlin, UK (The Philharmonia), and the US. The unifying idea escapes me - it is not all concertos, actually only piano ones with Benedetti Michelangeli, Zimerman (LA Chopin) and Berman are included, the rest is mostly vocal works with the Chicago "Pictures at an Exhibition" tacked on for good measure. I guess the concerto was taken in its widest sense as denoting any kind of concerted effort, including with vocal soloists. In all honesty, the selection is rewarding, and if you only wanted "other stuff" by this conductor minus the symphonies, you could turn out happy. But overall it only added to the redundancy of those boxes you mentioned.

There was also a 16-CD "The Art of Carlo Maria Giulini" on Deutsche Grammophone Italy. I had that one before and gave it away

I was turned on to his LA/Brahms by my Doug Buys(my college theory/ear training teacher)
He let me borrow his copy and it blew me away....still one of my top "Go To" versions.
    Thanks Doug 👍

DG also has a Giulini in Concerto which is not only with concertos. It also has some choral work he did with BPO. With this one and 3 boxes Dave mentioned, the only thing missing from the DG Complete box which is out of print are the 9th, Franck's symphony and half CD of Britten with BPO, plus a few opera boxes.

Sorry, I posted the same thing on your heels before reading. Got to get into the habit of going through the comments first, not always have the time though... You get the pride of primacy. ;) Btw, right you are to mention that the long-awaited big box has already evaporated by now.

Perhaps, in that case, it is warranted, just to only get the "best" Abbado and not all of it (which is a lot).

Dave, The Complete Giulini DG-Decca box is nowhere to be found at a reasonable price. I checked it hours after you posted your video talk. So the only thing we are left with are the earlier boxes you mentioned. I wonder if your talks are causing a subset of your listeners to buy remaining copies and then posting them at outrageous prices. I am mentioning this with some hesitation, because I have seen this happen with many of the top recommendations you make. I am not sure what the solution might be.

Rest assured, the Complete Giulini DG box has been selling at ridiculously inflated prices for quite some time.
