What happens when tragedy befalls the happiest place on earth? This question was answered in May 1964 and January 1984, when Mark Maples and Regina Young lost their lives while riding Disneyland’s Matterhorn Bobsleds roller coaster.
Generally speaking, when people spend money and time going to places like Disneyland, they go there to have fun and have one of the most life-changing moments of their lives. They do not go to these amusement parks or board their roller coasters to be maimed, or worse, to have their lives ripped from them.
It is then expected that amusement parks will do everything they can to protect their customers from getting hurt or dying while riding their roller coasters. But expectations are like wishes, and sometimes the people whose job it is to make sure the riders are safe are too careless or too chill about it, which leads to the tragic stories we all know.
It is also not uncommon to see people on these rides actively putting their own lives in danger by trying out stunts or being lax about their own safety. The scariest thing about roller coaster accidents is the fact that you could be having the time of your life in one minute and then be maimed, dead or a headline in a local newspaper in the next minute.
This is the story of two of the deadliest roller coaster accidents to occur on Disneyland’s Matterhorn Bobsleds roller coaster, how and why they happened, and who is to blame in both of these unfortunate accidents.

Riding the Matterhorn is like a free chiropractic session cause of the roughness. Ride it first thing in the morning. You'll be wide awake after the ride.

Sadly unless you can prove otherwise, you have to assume the person killed unbuckled it themselves...

My grandmother used to take us to Disney World all the time, when I was little. It was a lot of fun and a lot less expensive.

Why do people insist on removing the restraints put in place to protect them? Then the family wants to cry foul. Sorry, but play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

The family is opportunistic. They feel they may as well cash in on the idiot so it isn't a complete waste.

Wow, the story about Dolly Young... I'm a bit in disbelief of a lawyer that would use the claim of basically two male ride attendants being *impressed* by two beautiful guests in the group, to be so distracted that they didn't do their jobs properly? Now that's some straw grasping, to be perfectly honest. Disney parks see beautiful guests every day. What makes someone think this day would be any different from the last, or the one before that, or even a week before that? Honestly, I'm disgusted that some "well-known" lawyer in the area, would go for such a demeaning accusation. It's really sad to see what some people will do for money. Yes, I'm speaking about the family, AND the lawyer both getting their pay they feel "due to them."

Well my heart does go out to the family for the loss of their loved one. But there is no easy way to say this but it’s pure stupidity and foolishness to disobey safety protocols. When we are young we think we are invincible. I love the Matterhorn. I was my first real roller coaster. I think I was maybe 7 years old the first time riding it.
