Phillip, your reviews are very straight forward! :) Always informative and easy to understand! Thanks!!!
I bought one 2 months ago and after 46 years of playing, this little goodie is turning out to be my favorite. My last combo was/is a Line 6 DT-25 and this Mesa RV-25 has superior overall tone. But that’s the difference between an all tube Mesa and an L6 tube hybrid.
Sounds brilliant brother, great playing too. Thanks for this best demo I've seen.
Loved the review! Straight to the point, and it sounded cool!
Buddy! Thank you so much for this video! I have a 2061cx and a TS9 just like yours and I was looking for a video where I could have the exact notion of the size of this head. Thanks again!. Cheers.
Man youve become my favourite youtuber!
Sounds so much better than any review of the mini rectifier I've seen👍
This is the Rectoverb not the mini
This is as good of a review of this amp as I’ve run across. I have owned one for a few months now and absolutely love it for its versatility and beautiful clean tones especially, but blues tones do take a little tweaking as you said. I run wet effects through the effects loop, and dry through the front and it’s very versatile, which is what I was initially shooting for. It’s a very loud amp, that’s for certain, and very gigable..
Why watch a review of a product you've had for a few months lol?
Giggity
Phillip, I saw a review you did where you said this Amp does not sound great at lower volumes. I'm considering one of these however the band I play in does try to keep the stage volume low and mike every thing. given that what are your thoughts. Thanks !
Thanks for the demo! I've been eyeing this amp for a while and have started to go back and forth between this or just buying a Dual Rec Solo Head. Do they sound much different compared to their mini ancestors? Are the Solo heads too loud for house practice? Would be cool to see a comparison video of the big rec vs the mini. Thanks!
Dat shirt tho.
Good review man. Keep em coming
Phillip,wich pedal(s) recreates best a M/B Rectifier? Thanks!
Hi Phil, when you A/B'd this with the Mini Rec did you find the gain the same? I'm thinking of changing to this one but my Mini Rec seems to have a bit more of a sizzle on the high gain vintage and modern settings. It's hard to tell on RUclips though. Cheers
Thank you.
Hi Phillip, would an EQ pedal help with the volume issue on this amp? I'm trying to get a decent metal tone at basement volume, with a child in the house. I can push it nicely with a drive pedal, but even with the volume very low its very hard to contain this thing. I was thinking of a mesa 5 band eq in the loop, to shape the sound and maybe take the volume down a notch. Can you comment on that?
Nice review as always Mr. Philips. How do you compare this recto verb to EVH 5150 in both clean and high gain tones?
Hey great review, but can you switch the two modes with the footswitch? Please someone answer! Thanks
Rita really cleans up nicely.
I just picked up one of these - what do you recommend for Amp Jewel lights - I don't like that red on mine. Does anything work or Fender ones or?
Hey, is the clean channel loud?? loud enought to play over a drummer i mean
Good review but needs better recorded sound. What camera Mic you using?
Phillip, I know these are apples and oranges, but what are your thoughts between this amp and a Fender 68 Reissue Deluxe or Vibrolux? I have tried all three, own the Deluxe and I am looking for something with a bit more variety (master volume, two channels, effects loop, different tones, etc). What I love about the Deluxe is it takes pedals so well, but I find the basic tone is not too inspiring. Thoughts?I like most everything about the Mesa Rectoverb, but am wondering how it will sound? My ideal sound is a slightly driven Bassman, but at a reasonable volume.
I can help you with that. I've been looking for a new amp for a little while, and narrowed things down to a 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb (not the 65 reissue, the one with the Bassman channel) and the Mesa Rectoverb 25 (combo). Like you, I wasn't looking for a metal tone, but I need a good clean as well as a good crunch that sounds good even at home.
In order to make my decision, I've rented both for a couple weeks, to make sure I could give them a proper try.
Both are great amps, but I decided to go with the Rectoverb.
The 68 Custom is a good amp, but I find the build quality of the Mesa to be better (it's dead silent where the 68 Custom has a little of background noise, the 68 Custom pops when flipping the standby switch).
Tonewise, the 68 has a little more resonance and presence in the low end, but the Mesa has a tighter bass response.
You can dial the Mesa to sound like the Deluxe (just slightly roll the mids down and presence up), but the 68 has a little more sag/compression. You really have to play it to feel the difference.
Both take pedals very well, the 68 Custom sounds glorious when pushed a little (4-5) on the Bassman channel with a fuzz face pushing it (but it's loud).
Also, the Mesa has a master volume, and you can really get a great tone at bedroom volume. The 68 can give you a good tone at low volume too, but it sounds a little sterile (sounds much better when you start going above 3).
Agreed. I own a 68 Custom Deluxe and all of that is true. Live, it it is glorious, but at home recording/practice levels it is not that inspiring. I love the custom channel at a volume of 4-5, but I want an amp that is a bit more versatile. Thanks for your feedback.
Best little amp I ever tried !.......is that the same amp as the combo ?
Nice playing and tutorial
@phil do you still have this amp? Still like it?
Awesome review! Can you comment on the tone of the clean channel with the "pushed" option engaged?
I'm looking for that bright blackface Fender tone and was hoping I could get it from the mini rectoverb.
The clean pushed mode is my favorite because I use a tube scream in front and it is very Marshall sounding. The amps clean is great, but the only Fender I think it sounds like is the Super Sonic.
Would it be ok for rehearsals / gigging volume wise?
You prefer the mark 5 over this right?
So this was the closest video I could find, but I picked up a Rectoverb 50 112 combo. It has the bias switch on the back, I want to hear the difference between 6L6 and EL34. But I can’t seem to figure out the bias switch on the back. Does it slide or does it pull out. Mine seems stuck and I cannot find any info.
I think that apart the reverb and the look, is the same oh Mini Rectfier 25...is this ture?
+Phillip McKnight in your opinion would the rectoverb be too loud for 'bedroom use' I dont gig but want a decent tube amplifier. Would i be be better off getting something else for home use?
+DexterLlew It is tough to get a great sound at super low volumes with out a pedal. With a pedal, it can be at any level.
It depends on your definition of bedroom level. For almost any amp has to sound good it needs to be loud enough for the speakers to push some air. On my opinion yes, you can get some sweet sounds out of this amp without pissing off the neighbors.
Good morning Phillip! Question, I have read that the drive channel is loud enough to cut through a band but the clean channel does not have enough volume. We do not have a boogie store to try one out, thanks for any info.
I do not know, I haven't tried it. I will have to see
Thanks
I'm thinking about getting one of these in a combo version, thing is I'm not in a band, are they ok for bed room/living room use?
Big Daddy [OFFICIAL] it's a gigging amp
8 ohm speaker out will work with two notes captor X 8?
Just one question, those 10/25 watts are loud enough to play live with a drummer? Thanks.
Yes, rock and blues, metal would be hard to hear.
Thanks for answering!
Question, I have the same head 2 weeks old and notice when transporting in my vehicle I hear a clanking in the amp! Is there something loose inside or is that normal? seems to work fine, just wondering if you kind of move it back and forth you can hear it. Thanks for any info, Chad
That is just the reverb tank. It is basically two or four very long springs and they are bouncing and hitting the can that surrounds them. Sounds horrible, but it is perfectly fine.
Thanks,I was thinking this was the reverb, but thought the reverb was just a tube. Got it now thanks.
kingedwards99 o
so you plug your effects, lets say Boss Chorus, to "Loop Send"?
The head and combo are the same thing right
This question might sound silly but I have an Orange 212 16 ohm input. But these Mesa minis have two 4 ohm and 1 8 ohm inputs. Will this head be compatible with my 16 ohm cabinet?
Yes. No problem at all. 8ohm goes into 16ohm and a lot of people think it sounds better also .
How does 8 ohm go into 16 ohm?
I was always told 8 head 8 cab
4 ohm head can go into 4,8, or 16 ohm. 8 ohm head can go 8, or 16 and 16 ohm head can go 16. There is more to it than that, but the easy thing to remember is the more ohms the safer.
Anthony S. Right on! I like that saying too. I've also described it to people who've asked me like this: Its like pushing a car in neutral. Amp+cab in same ohms is like pushing the car on a perfectly flat road, pretty balanced. Amp into higher ohm cab, like pushing the car ever so slightly up hill, but it's doable. Amp into lower ohm cab is like pushing the car slightly down hill, eventually the car will go faster than you can run to keep up and your legs will burn out. That's what the output transformer does!
maybe the extra trans is for the reverb
not sure
I believe the part you refer to as a choke is actually a transformer for the reverb on the amp which would explain why your mini rect doesn't have it. I'm not expert enough on the stuff to say 100% but I'm pretty sure that's what I've read in my fender schematics. Either way great video. Nice collection hanging around you too.
You are a 100% correct. I found out after the video it was for the reverb. I was just trying to figure out why the rectoverb is warmer and slightly fuller sounding than the mini rec. I guess it's just in my head or maybe it's just the reverb. I should have updated that info thank you for pointing it out.
There were a couple of circuit updates for the mini rec on the earliest versions I believe .. these could account for the slight diff in sound you were getting , these can be done by hobbyists or back at Mesa.. of course the mini rec is aimed at the high gain metal market so maybe it does have a more aggressive sound anyway.
Looks way sexier than the mini rec
How does this compare with the mark v 25?
Jim Copeland: the Mark V will run circles around this RV25 for flexibility. The upside is the 25 is a versatile, easy to use amp right out of the box. Whereas the M-V will have you constantly searching for the perfect sounds/tones because the possibilities are so vast/advanced. I chose this RV-25 for that very reason. They are both outstanding for their price, but I personally am not a tweaker. I’ve owned many amps but no longer gig so this is turning out to be may favorite after 46 years. It’s a plug n play delight👍
What speaker cabinet are you using in this demo?
The one that he mentions within the first ten seconds of the video.
Thanks my friend! Play with a Strat..
Hey Phillip, I wonder if you are still digging this amp in 2021?
Yes, still use it.
@@PhillipMcKnight Just got one. Very excited. Thanks for responding.
YEAH
Its my dream (( Very expensive price tag now...
Man I love this amp so much. It was a bit difficult to dial in at first. Then I read the manual, got a Maxon OD808 and it got easier.
I eventually managed to get two Mesa 2x12's with it, one open with Black Shadows and one closed with V30's and the sounds these things make combined are just surreal.
Ever tried the clean channel with a P90?
It has EL84's, you keep saying EL34's. Good review otherwise.
You are correct. Thanks for the catch.
Power transformer, output transformer, and reverb transformer. No choke or input transformer.
I guess this amp isn’t good for bedroom use..
It's very decent at low volume.
Gimme that Gibson, for freeeeeeeeeeeeee....
Dude that amp has EL84's. Get the DSL 20 it has EL34's. The only low wattage amp that uses them. That's why the Marshall DSL20HR kills this muddy sounding amp. Mesa has seen it's day. Engl, Peavey, Marshall, is kicking their ass.
I like your videos man but sometimes you pratle right along with nonsense I think you should stick to exactly demonstrating the product May I suggest when you get through listen to your video and listen to yourself and that way you'll be able to tell if you were yakking too much
