The original lyrics are better because it’s “you’ve been scared to say” and they’re now voicing it. The new lyrics are contradictory because it’s “that you’re afraid to say” and then they say it.
More than that the new lyric screws up the tense mid-phrase! “Something up till now”: past or present perfect. “You’re afraid”: present tense. It’s driving me insane 😂
@@biancaprandin3525you're not alone - this is the first time I heard it and I threw my phone across my bed. I'm in the US and I sing this song to myself often. I was not prepared for the lyric change and didn't think he'd actually do it!
thank you Bianca for bringing this to attention, every time I sing the old one automatically and get annoyed that it's been changed 😂 (also to the other commentors pointing out how gramatically the new one doesn't make sense, didn't even think about that)
the original lyrics are gramatically correct therefore the better option, “something up til now that you’ve been scared to say” meaning you were afraid to say until this moment rather than “something up til now that you’re afraid to say” meaning that you are in the moment still afraid to say said thing
The old jingle is the better one. It is not just a switch from 'scared' to 'afraid' but there is a tense change too that doesn't make sense: "Something up to now that you've been scared to say" "Something up to now that you're afraid to say" In the new version it starts in past tense and then switches to present tense and that makes no sense at all.
No, it does. "Something up till now that you're afraid to say." A teacher would dock you points for not saying "You've been scared to say." but that's pointless. Because then you're sentence is "Something up till now that you've been scared to say." basically sets the whole sentence consistently in the past tense. Which LOOKS good in a school? But there is no grammatical rule that your whole sentence has to refer to the past tense. Only the subject in question has to be referenced to the past tense. The subject being your unpopular opinion.
The old makes more sense that you always wanted to say it but didn't until now. The new one means you don't want to say it now but you will anyway; but they do want to say it because thats why they called in.
I agree with Bianca about the lyrics, but it's not really about "afraid" vs "scared" for me, but rather about the grammatical switch from "you've been" to "you're", which doesn't make sense with "up till now". This English teacher votes to switch back!
I vote to go back to "scared to say." I agree that the change is a bit off-putting when you're so used to the original lyrics. It made my brain pause with confusion lol 😂😅
Which is why it's bad for the song. The rest hasn't rhymed at all or had similar sounds to it at all, so now introducing two words to close to each other which are too similar is off putting.
@@buckycore yup. Apparently it’s the reason for the shapes. Probably just a chef trying to be fancy and making up a nice story in reality. Eat what you like is best. Italians don’t even have garlic bread with pasta or cappuccino after 11. And pineapple on pizza is a cardinal sin. 😂
As a huge comedy fan, I’m so glad this kid has gotten far better in doing his bits. I’ve been waiting for him to finally get his timing correct, for his jokes to finally land cause he’s always cracking jokes every interview he’s in!! I see it, Finn!!!!!! The potential!!!! I’m so happy! I hope he practices his comedy muscles more and more
'Afraid to say' will always scan better for musicians, but to me the whole point of the original them tune was its clunky nature. It surprised you and that's what made it funny when people attempted to sing along.
“Up till now that YOU’RE afraid to say” screws up the tense completely!! Something up till now refers to the present perfect, and throwing in a plain old present tense mid-phrase is just wrong 😤
BBC Radio 1 - listen to the comments below! It's definitely not the afraid vs scared, it's the grammatical tense you've changed (see many thoughts below) Other than that, ZERO notes. Love Greg and this show - just get those lyrics fixed haha
Now, let’s talk about Finn. This guy’s not just any singer; he’s the dude who’s been rockin’ our screens in “Stranger Things” and “It”. But music? That’s where his heart’s at. After Calpurnia split, he didn’t skip a beat. He teamed up with his bud Malcolm Craig, and they started The Aubreys, right? But Finn’s got this itch for something more… something solo. So, here’s the scoop: Finn’s cookin’ up a solo album that’s all about that lo-fi rock vibe, and he’s doin’ it all old-school, on tape1. It’s gonna drop in 2025, and man, it’s gonna be noisy in the best way2. But don’t sweat it, The Aubreys ain’t goin’ nowhere. They’re still gonna rock out together3. And the fans? They’re goin’ nuts! Nina’s like, “Why’d I just find out 'bout this website?” And Vale’s all, “This album’s gonna be amazeballs!” Everyone’s psyched, sendin’ love from all over the globe. Mexico, Argentina, you name it - they’re all cheerin’ for Finn. But here’s the real deal: Finn’s not just some actor who decided to strum a guitar. Nah, he’s the real McCoy. A true artist who’s been hustlin’ and bustlin’ in the biz, stayin’ true to his craft while keepin’ it real with his fans. So, what’s next for Finn? More shows, more tunes, and a whole lotta love from peeps like us. And hey, if you’re into snappin’ pics or cuttin’ videos, maybe you could hit him up. Who knows? You might just be the one to design his next album cover! That’s the word on the street, folks. Finn Wolfhard - actor, musician, and all-around rad dude. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open, ‘cause this guy’s just gettin’ started.
The old lyrics actually fit within the original phrasing of the jingle. When people write songs often songwriters try to replace wording but when you write for the melody it sounds better the with the naturally fit words. Also you’re not afraid to say it?
until NOW that you've BEEN scared to say makes sense > until now that you're afraid to say doesn't make sense. afraid is a nicer sounding word than scared, but scared sounds rougher, zaggardy and more anxious like actual fear. I vote scared.
I like the old version, mostly because I don't like the stretched/prolonged "you're" in "you are afraid to say" - It sounds lazy. And if your don't stretch the you're the you have to do a hard stop, which ruined the otherwise nice flow of the song. The old lyric keeps you on you toes and fits with an upbeat jingle 😀.

Ok this is thr first time Im hearing the new lyrics and my world just fucking collapsed. Bring back the old lyrics " something up to now that you've been scared to say"
For me it's about the length of the syllables🙈most words in the tune are kept short and crisp (at least the syllables) and when you only try to drag out one word (afraaiiid) in the whole jingle it stands out as wrong
"You're afraid" is more of a lazy tongue twister than "you're been scared". The sounds of the two words are too similar. The "'re" and "raid" keep the tongue in the back of the mouth for too long. The "you've been scared" is more punchy, and more agile in it's syllables, like the rest of the song.

FACTS! No you got a big point
