  • Ich wurde von einem aufmerksamen Zuschauer auf einen Fehler hingewiesen, was die "Bratkartoffeln" anbelangt: "Bratkartoffeln" = "Pommes de terre sautées" (also nicht "sortiert" sondern "sautiert").
    Hierzu eine kleine assoziative Bemerkung:
    "Sauter" (französisch) = "Springen" (deutsch)
Dies gibt der letzten Szene ('aus-dem- Fenster-geworfen-werden' des Gastes mit der Szene-abschliessenden 'sautierten Kartoffel-Beilage') die Pointe i.S.v. "Der Sprung aus dem Fenster"...

Yep. But while people from Denmark, Holland, Belgium and France stopped making jokes about the war decades ago, the English still can't stop themselves. Let's call this "Island behaviour" (Btw, they also do so about France, Holland, Scotland, Ireland.) in short: everything that isn't English is "Outlandish", which is rather a pejorative statement, by jolly good Jove!

There has always been a discussion about how funny Monty Python really were. But recently some of their old funny sketches have become gloomy reality, so laughter has to die down anyway. Like this one here, in the age of 2G and forced vax under green-brown German leadership. Or the famous Loretta sketch from Life of Brian.

I’d only ever read about the Python’s shows for German TV back in the early 70’s. This is the first time I’ve seen any of it. For non-German Python fans, this is more of historical interest. I’ve visited Bavaria many times and I understand what they were doing here, but it’s an example of comedy unique to one country - and unfunny to everyone else!
For anyone In the US or UK who complains that this is rubbish, watch it for what it is; a window into a different country’s humour. (My friends in Munich would be falling off their chairs laughing at this!!!)

To me, it is not about Bavaria but about a tourist's (often well founded) fear of being ripped off and made a laughing stock in a strange country. Also pokes fun at national clichés in general. It would not take much of a rewrite to place this in a French or Italian restaurant. Cleese's High German is indeed admirable and very clear, but of course somewhat out of place in a Bavarian inn.

I suppose it was made for German TV as even with my schoolboy German I can only make out less than half what is being said. There would be no point putting it on the BBC - I don't think the slapstick parts would make it worthwhile showing to British audiences.
