being a Chinese, the name "flying dragon" immediately makes me feel this might come from a fellow Chinese speaker.. "Flying dragon" used to be the nickname Chinese players gave mutas when starcraft 1 was popular in China but with no localization. The official translation of muta is actually "异龙“, different/strange/exotic/malformed dragon. Chinese language can get very ... "descriptive" when handling translation of names from a different culture. Chinese translation of Thor is literally "Thunder God", viper "flying snake", colossus "massive statue" .
If you think about it, it makes perfect sense and isn't that different from the original approach. Original unit names in StarCraft are not just random combinations of letters, but rather random combinations of words and particles of European languages, specifically English, Latin, Greek and Scandinavian. "-ling" is a suffix for baby animals, so zergling means "baby zerg"; "Terran" is a Latin word for "people of Earth"; "Colossus" is Greek for "giant" or "massive statue"; "Viking" is Scandinavian for "rogue warrior" or "pirate"; "Hydra" is a Greek mythical creature, a "many-headed dragon" if you wish. "-lisk" is also some sort of a Greek suffix, as in "basilisk"; Thor is a name of Scandinavian thunder god; All modern European languages and cultures are heavily influenced by Greek and Latin and to a less extent by English and Scandinavian. Thus, there's not too much to translate in terms of names, when you are translating into another European language. I know that in Russian version of StarCraft2 only English parts are translated into Russian, like "widow mine", "ghost" and "bane" in "baneling". The situation must be different in China, and it's a natural decision for the localization team to translate the names into originally Chinese ones. P. S. linguistic origin of names can be a great tool in writing. For example, names like "R'lyeh" and "Cthulhu" in H. P. Lovecraft's novels feel alien because they are either random combinations of letters or have some obscure origin. Another great example is "Dune" by F. Herbert, where he used primarily Arabic words for names.
