That's the great thing about creations from different parts of the world, the unique design language and approach from each region make the car culture special. With that said, fuck the haters.

    Im 42 Raced a lot of fast cars. To this day nothing scared me more then the first gen viper, zero assists, torque that exploded the rear tires at any rpm. Its the only car i have ever driven where the whole time you have to focus. Ive driven newer gt500s where i can drive fast with ease. Theres is so few on the road because of this. Awesome Car If you have balls of lead.

    I'm from the UK and know fine well Vipers were designed to handle 👍, people also make fun of how you can get the same peak power out of a turbo 4 cylinder, seemingly unaware how in a street car powerband, torque, and response are a massive factor in how it actually feels to drive.

    • @user-hc5si5tw5p
      @user-hc5si5tw5p Год назад +1

      They also forget how heavy most those turbo 4s and i6s are. They often weigh more than an LS v8 and not much less than a single cam v10 which has a much much higher tuning capability.

    Great video! I wish you had mentioned the Dodge (aka Chrysler) took the Viper to Europe and entered the FIA -GT2 series in 1996 and by 1998 the Chrysler Viper was winning all but one race in the series totally walking over the best the Europeans could offer. This dominance continued for the better part of a decade. The Viper had several class win at the 24 hours of Le Mans and also Daytona, In 2000 the Dodge Viper was the overall winner of the 24 hour race at Daytona passing the struggling to prototype car late Sunday morning. Here is a reference to how the Viper stomped on the best the Europeans could offer in their own racing series. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Viper_GTS-R

      You can say Thankyou to Team Oreca for that as they were the ones that made the viper competitive. At the same time Porsche decides to stop factory support in 96 for the 993 GT2 Evo in focus for the semi failed GT1 911 to compete with the dominating McLaren F1. Which by the way the GT2 and viper was the original competition but the McLaren was so advanced that's how the GT1 and GT2 category split....... In IMSA the GT2 Evo had more success against the American vipers were not campaigned by Oreca...... But originally The vipers were terrible during the Bpr series but Oreca did so much development each year......

      Jeremy Clarkson said one of the nicest things about Viper too. He said that all supercars after testing and filming for an episode of Top Gear would typically break down (on some occasions even during filming).
      Viper on the other had took extreme abuse, and the day after they finished filming, it started up and was good to go like nothing happened.

      Bit of a stretch. A Viper team managed by the French, engineered by the English, with all European drivers.
      Also wouldn't exactly call it dominating European cars, considering it couldn't compete in GT1 and had to go up against their 2nd best offerings.

And having raced these cars, THANK YOU FOR CLEARING THE AIR ABOUT THE HANDLING! I've said the same thing for years about the excellent handling and the yoyo's wrecking them mostly because of the huge torque... There's nothing wrong with the cars, it's the drivers of the time only being use to 100 ft/lbs of torque and not being able to drive, especially without nannies!

    Great job as always. Thanks for re-visiting the poor handling myth. I have wanted a viper since I saw my first RT-10 in 1993. Now that I can afford one the Gen 5's are becoming too expensive so I'm looking hard at Gen 2's but was worried that they are more prone to spinning without traction control. You are helping me understand that I can keep it between the lines if I respect its abilities and get my foot out of it when it tells me too. That plus keeping fresh rubber on it and I should be fine.

    • @johnhufnagel
      @johnhufnagel Год назад +3

      We lost a lot of SRT-4s in the early days for the same reason. People not respecting what the car could do and driving beyond their abilities. When you're only charging $20k MSRP for the second fastest production Chrysler at the time, you get lot of... uneducated... people behind the wheel. The Gen1 and Gen2 Vipers were equivalently cheap for what they can do.

    I have never stumbled across your channel until today. When I read the title of your video, I feared the worst! I am not going to lie, when I read it, I thought no way is this guy going to expand my knowledge of anything Dodge Viper! I've owned over 20 Gen 1, 2, & 3 Vipers throughout the years and used to be pretty involved with the Viper Community. I've done the tours and heard all the Bob Lutz, Tom Gale, Roy Sjoberg, Lee Iacocca, Carrol Shelby, and Dick Winkles stories. From the involvement of Lamborghini Right down to the double bubble top design taken from the Shelby Daytona designed by Pete Brock. The first thing that popped into my head was, if any of the old Viper Alley Members from back in the day, stumble upon this they will have a field day because, with that title, this guy is setting himself up for a barrage of sarcasm. To be honest I only watched the video to prepare myself to read the commments! At the 25-second mark, you grabbed my attention with the funny clip but then blew me away with the fact that you sought out Roy Sjoberg and had actual clips of Roy telling you in his own words how the headlights came to be and the reason Iacocca did put cupholders in the car, two facts that I never knew! That alone is information that can now be added to yhe archives. Like you said only a handful of people may have known and likely would die with Roy when that time occurs. This may have never been shared with the public had you not had the initiative to ask. Thank you so much for this info and Video. Although I have not owned a Viper for several years now, I met some of the most interesting and best people I have ever had the pleasure to know and kept up with many of them over the past 23 years. The Viper owner's community used to be pretty tight-knit and spanned from coast to coast and beyond. I certainly hope that it still is. SUBSCRIBED!!!

    This is a great video, being well researched, great looking, and including the impressive interview clips of Roy, together with your personal impressions, being a Gen II Viper owner. The only thing I would have changed was the click-baity title. Without that, it would have been flawless. I have a 2000 Viper RT/10, and I still enjoyed learning those inside stories and lessor known facts about the Viper. Thanks!
