I think that she's a creative and innovative artist, and liked her solo music before iam. I didn't realize she had such a cult following with gay men lol. Most of them are over the top and need to chill.
I knew it! Blue was written and shot in real-time, and it was clear that she was trying to get us to participate more in the creation process but instead everyone just worshiped her as they do any other pop artist. She seemed pretty disappointed with us as it drew to a close.
You didn't realize, really? Where have you been for 7 years? Mostly gay men supported iamamiwhoami (financially and by sharing it with others to grow the audience) and made it possible for the project to grow into what it is today. Maybe you should be thankful :)
So I'm thinking that, basically put, this song is about the pressure she feels from some fans treating her like a god. And she's saying that if she really is a god, or Jesus-type figure as people treat her, that she'll soon be crucified or burnt at the stake, by either her admirers or her haters. Very interesting. Take note to her closing words: "I still have fire. Simmer down. Simmer down..." The song is very good too! Love it! So happy to have iamam- I mean... ionnalee, back with us :P
And as a sidenote: it's so funny that during the song I was thinking "I'd love to hear her real voice, singing acoustically, with no effects on it", and by the end of the song I had my wish! Acapella even.
Jonna has such a way with her physical performance, her expression, her poise. The exaggerated haughtiness of the TV pop idol is delicious, and the delicate, curious mimicry of the idolizer is exquisite. She had this all through iamamiwhoami (most profoundly in Kin) and she seems only to continue to perfect it.
The speech at the beginning of the video is from Winston Churchill's "The Threat of Nazi Germany", November 16, 1934. "Many people think that the best way to escape war is to dwell upon its horrors and to imprint them vividly upon the minds of the younger generation. They flaunt the grisly photograph before their eyes. They fill their ears with tales of carnage. They dilate upon the ineptitude of generals and admirals. They denounce the crime as insensate folly of human strife."
Your guess would be as good as mine. It could be a subversive reference to rising anti-Semitic and fascist sentiments world-wide, it could also be in reference to the songs subject matter. There are so many interpretations, really.
yeah the whole thing is a pretty obvious commentary on fascism like it or not lol but then again jonna lees music has always been pretty unabashedly political , just perhaps in a way that it hasnt previously registered as such
Extremist political groups are terrifying. Tyrannical autocracies and fundamentalist, theocratic movements all over the world are responsible for such terrifying violence in the name of Superior Races, Superior Religions, Superior Sexualities, Superior Genders, etc. Communism is rather outmoded, however, and has actually been in steady decline for quite a while. Although populist left politics are growing in America, worldwide, they are the minority and declining. Even the far left political movements in America veer towards the more peaceful, negotiable ideologies of Socialism and Progressivism than such an outdated, absolutist ideology like Communism. On the contrary, the most violent and oppressive political movements we see across the globe are conservative + religious ones: Fundamentalist Islam and Fundamentalist Christianity. They sway socio-economic political states towards in-group mentality, the violent oppression of who they deem unholy or unworthy, and autocratic, totalitarian, single-party governments. Times would be less scary if we stopped violent political thought from becoming mainstream. We made that mistake over a half century ago and millions of people died because of it. We're letting it happen again. Also, as an art historian/artist, I must inform that all art is political, due in part to its sheer existence as a cultural artifact, let alone that it may also be intentionally political. Artists are making much more intentionally political work as of late because the world is a more political place. Art is merely a reflection of the times we live in.
so much imagery here, the strawberries, the throwback to the "in concert" phone call videos and most of all Blue began with the black box of Kin burning, Samaritan has the clear box of Blue burning in the fireplace
jrod2824 I think the figure we saw in Hunting For Pearls was her running from these people, and now they caught her and they are forcing her to be a deity because they know of her power.
You know what, ionnalee is right. Just because she came out of nowhere with her previous project, made amazing audiovisual art, and danced on ice, doesn't mean some of you crazy fans need to call her "god" "goddess" or "my forest nymph lulz." And I can only imagine how some fans acted at her pop up shop. She's very humble and just wants to be regarded as a normal, female artist and people should treat her as such.
Marnetta Vanderbilt I gotta confess that people exaggerate sometimes on the Good things that say about her (I myself did this a couple of times), but she IS amazing with her music. I always enter in a deeper level of my mind when I Listen to her music.
Alyson Henrique You're absolutely right! She has created images and sounds that evoke some of the strongest emotions I've ever experienced. Truly unique artistry. However, there needs to be some boundary between the fan and artist. I'm sure she loves people appreciating her music but treating her like a deity or pressuring her when she doesn't release something new is ridiculous. But I guess that comes with any popular artist who puts their work out in the world.
That's what you get when you get all mysterious and shit in your work I guess :/ Then again, the whole iamamiwhoami thing all started by talking about how people wanted to use her talents for themselves or something.
I'm confused by OP comment, she is not a forest nymph? I mean there's irrefutable video proof that she came from another dimension out of an aluminum tree into our world and was enlightened by magical fluorescent lights. Like... I'm not saying it was aliens but it was aliens
i am so thankful to be born in the same era as her and i get to experience all the wonderful art she helps form into this world ;;__;; this audiovisual blast makes me so emotional.. thank you Jonna for being a constant inspiration! I truly love everything you create!
O artista faz musica somente "To whom it may concern".
I absolutely adore every bit of this. I really like how TV-Ionna begins the performance with an almost throat-clearing kinda motion/sound, as if requesting attention for all to hear the message she has to send
Love everything about it. The song, the dance, the clothing, the environment, the dialogue, Claes, the song she sang at the end, and of course, Jonna Lee.
OFFICIAL LYRICS Oh, the future is gonna be bright A clear path and all the stars are out Looking up at the dark blue sky Walking steady, not blinded by the light I don't believe in a god, Let's leave religion out of all this I don't remember promising my life And soul to bring you all bliss If I am what you say, I expect to be hanging from a wooden cross When all this is done, it's done Oh, the past will never be the same Once I am done, good memories will be gone They guard their secrets with their life I spit on your fo-forsaken tribe I don't believe in a god, Let's leave religion out of all this I don't remember promising my life And soul to bring you all bliss If I am what you say, I expect to be hanging from a wooden cross When all this is done, it's done Oh, thy beauty makes me go blind When you are near, my senses don't function I give you this empty life Can I be your soldier with a knife?
This is magical. I thoroughly enjoyed this music video. Jonna Lee......you are a TREMENDOUS talent. Your mystery is what keeps me coming back for me. To whom it may concern? Me.
I've been a fan for over four years, and while I've witnessed her sound steadily moving toward mainstream pop, her messages and art direction are so incredible and addictive, I'm not going anywhere! Also, there are so many references to her older work in this!
Seeing as the lady can't make bad music, I didn't mind waiting for this. I always glean something new each time I hear her existing work (which never gets too old to keep the melody seeking demon inside me appeased). What I love about Ionnalee is that she's not only an auditory delight; she's also entrancing to the eyes. And her videos have this haunting quality that leave you longing for another watch, wondering, "What'd I maybe miss?" The music alone's amazing - but enjoying it with the visual aspect just touches facets of your spirit in inexplicably unique ways. Keep doin what ya do, girl - on your own time. Going at your own creative pace is what keeps your art so brilliant.
OH MY GOD. It's perfect. I have no words anymore to describe my feelings about it. I've been waiting so long for you, Jonna, and you came back! I even can't imagine my life and the playlist without your art and music because I grew up with your music and videos as well. You are kind of inspiration. I hope we will see something extraordinary and unexpecting from you. Anyway, I'm happy that you with us again. Looking forward to your concert in Russia. Love you
Delicious! Sounds a little different from the iam project - I'm loving it, can not wait to dive into this new incarnation of Jonna and Comme des Garçons and discover all of the symbolism, real and imagined. A match made in heaven - name a better duo (I'll wait). I'm with you all the way ionnalee xxx
"I don't remember promising my life and soul to bring you all bliss."
Just rewatched b and the others from 7 years ago - that stuff was brilliant, once in a lifetime type of creative work. Not as thrilled by this newer stuff, but it still has great merit
Nymph, I'm crying, your pure art is the greatest gift for me, the only one thing that makes me feel happy. I am like a giant, who can explore a huge world inside, essence of myself. My gratitude to you!
wow, the collab with Comme des Garçons looks really good, ionna! (I like the i in jonna, keeps it personal!! it's almost like it's an answer: i am, am i? who am i? ionna lee) really love the strange places you have been finding in music, been following for a long time and only expect more in the times you decide so or feel like doing; hope it is a beginning for a new visual album, you sure have a say on that, you've been the first one to tell stories in full length! real love from Portugal!
""I don't remember promising my life and soul to bring you all bliss"
Damn.. Some meta-roasting of the fans begging her for new music?..
In the interview she did, she stated that part of the inspiration for this song is her frustration with being put on a pedestal by the fans
Samaritan: someone who gives help to people who need it
I think that she's a creative and innovative artist, and liked her solo music before iam. I didn't realize she had such a cult following with gay men lol. Most of them are over the top and need to chill.

Wow. This is THE most badass way to come back at some of the toxic fans. And it's just a really good song as well.
What do you mean man? Is epic song though
@@overlord1037Those who obsess over her. Calling her Goddess and Queen - every darn time.
@@amberbaum4079 Um, alrighty then :D Still a great song. I hope things are good yo ...
@@amberbaum4079I find it so funny that that one Andy Zaturno guy who's worshipping her in the comments of every single video is missing in this one

you will have to try harder. or you can just read her interview on another magazine.
I like your idea on this. I can actually see it being very real.
Completely off topic but I think I recognize you from GGD lol
Also, great interpretation!

thank you so much @ Illustrious13- i was wondering why it seemed so eerily familiar
what conclusion should be made out of this?
and what relation it bears to the song - can you please explain?

I agree to the first two points but there is no seethrough-box in the fire that resembles BLUE :(
I think the new "box" in this era is the T.V. itself..

OFFICIAL LYRICS
Oh, the future is gonna be bright
A clear path and all the stars are out
Looking up at the dark blue sky
Walking steady, not blinded by the light
I don't believe in a god,
Let's leave religion out of all this
I don't remember promising my life
And soul to bring you all bliss
If I am what you say,
I expect to be hanging from a wooden cross
When all this is done, it's done
Oh, the past will never be the same
Once I am done, good memories will be gone
They guard their secrets with their life
I spit on your fo-forsaken tribe
I don't believe in a god,
Let's leave religion out of all this
I don't remember promising my life
And soul to bring you all bliss
If I am what you say,
I expect to be hanging from a wooden cross
When all this is done, it's done
Oh, thy beauty makes me go blind
When you are near, my senses don't function
I give you this empty life
Can I be your soldier with a knife?
These aren't the official lyrics, but it's what I hear anyways lol

Thy for it. It's funny that there are still lines in it from the bullett magazine interview what was almost 6 years ago.

Once again some brilliant audiovisual by Jonna Lee. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Good job!

Love it, you're such an amazing artist and human Jonna ♥
I have been a lover of her music since I stumbled upon her about five years ago
OMG! OMG! OMG! THIS IS A WET DREAM. When she next tours I am travelling from Sydney to see it. Who else is coming??
This is such a good song! I just accidentally ended up here! Amazing!
Can I PLEASE LIKE THIS MORE THAN ONCE, PURE GENIUS.
It is soooo good to see that the art of making great and provocative music videos is not dead!

this is great Jonna....it's very uplifting and energetic.......
the bass is huge on my system.....like my whole house shakes
So amazing!
The song, the video, the outfits, the dance moves.
When they speak swedish they say "Anpassa dig lite mer efter oss"... in english: "adjust yourself to be a little more like us"
Thank you very much! And what did he say right before?
It's so vage but i think he is saying" Don't think you are somebody"
What i get from it is three lines:
"Do you think you are anybody/who do you think you are"
"Adjust/adapt yourself"
"Become more like us"
Fascinating, thanks! But can you write that first line in the original language?
"tror du, at du âr nån?" - literal 'believe you, that you are some?'
PERFECT!
I can't stop watching.
Ah Jonna, my old friend. Im so glad you are back. Welcome home.
I'M SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so fulfilled! I cannot wait for what is next. omg.
Of course you would be a fan of Ionna Lee, an insanely talented and beautiful woman.

WAIT a minute, I was not ready for this...
Wow, absolutely love it!
Excited for this new direction.
Nymph, I'm crying, your pure art is the greatest gift for me, the only one thing that makes me feel happy. I am like a giant, who can explore a huge world inside, essence of myself. My gratitude to you!
the message behind this song and video is chilling. How you're using your voice is incredibly important and I love you for it 🕯💓
wow, the collab with Comme des Garçons looks really good, ionna! (I like the i in jonna, keeps it personal!! it's almost like it's an answer: i am, am i? who am i? ionna lee)
really love the strange places you have been finding in music, been following for a long time and only expect more in the times you decide so or feel like doing; hope it is a beginning for a new visual album, you sure have a say on that, you've been the first one to tell stories in full length! real love from Portugal!
As always Ionnalee is AMAZING. This woman can do no wrong whether solo or not. Been listening to this for 2 yrs now. Keep up the good work!!!
