That's the same with anything where you want to be fast or efficient. 100m sprint, formula 1 racing, golf, speedcubing, even in most martial arts you usually want to finish your opponent as fast as possible. Speedrunning is anything but unique in that aspect.
@@nothydrostorm6711 Ironic are speedruns that take longer than normally completing a game. But paradoxical is that more time is spent so less time is spent.
8:50 it actually doesn’t save 5 frames here, fast accel only save 5 frames in the first and third room of 8-4. In this situation a perfect fast accel would save 2 frames. 11:24 You actually don’t release the b button or do a 1 frame jump for this clip since the pipe is 3 blocks tall. Other than that great video!
Love the video, I think you should use the term "segmented" instead of "spliced" though. I know they mean the same thing, but splice has cheating connotations
as a big fan and never player of the NES version, this is wonderful to learn! it's amazing the versions in are actually so close, if it wasn't for Speedrunning, I think we would assume them to be identical beyond aesthetic change
this sort of concept is really funny and interesting! two games i grew up on, mario bros 3 advance on the gba and mario 64 ds, have some iconic glitches fixed and yet their speedruns and TASes are just as insane for example, you cant blj on the ds but you can groudpound through the floor in many places lmao
the fact that some iconic glitches like the flagpole glitch were left in reminds me of a question ive had for a while if someone were to code a game with speedrun glitches deliberately put in, such as knowingly putting a tiny gap in a wall, would that defeat the purpose? i mean part of speedrunning is to solve the puzzle of the fastest run, so would intentional glitches break that motive?
Not really. At the end of the day the main purpose of a speedrun is finish the game the fastest way possible using both intentional and unintentional mechanics, at least in an any%. I don't see why something as a "intentional glitch" would defeat that purpose.
Given the absolute gem of a game that Celeste is and the enduring popularity of its speedgame, no it would absolutely not break that motive if done right.
I'm honestly more surprised by how similar the All-Stars version is than I am by how different it is. I assumed it was rebuilt from the ground up, and everything from physics to enemy behavior would be slightly different. The fact that even something like the flagpole glitch is still possible, let alone has most the same setups, is mind blowing to me.
1:49 that took me so offguard x3, i did not expect GRAND DAD anyways i might be a bit spoiled but putting in indicators and animations when you're explaining stuff would be really neat
I'm honestly surprised that a lot of the same tech exists in both the original SMB1 and the All Stars version. You'd think that since it's running on an entirely different engine, stuff like pipe clips, the flagpole glitch, framerules, subpixels, and the 4-2 wrong warp would be complete non-factors or at least work very differently to the original. Hell, even the BBG still exists, though it isn't helpful like in the original. And the human limit for each game is within 1-2 seconds of each other! SMB1 in All Stars is a VERY faithful remake.
All Stars isn’t a remake per se, it’s actually closer to a remaster. It was built off of the original games’ source code. That’s why the physics are identical to the originals, the same glitches still work, etc, because they’re actually just the same games with a new coat of paint. The glitches that don’t work aren’t a result of an engine change or anything like that, it’s because they were manually patched out. The most notable gameplay difference is the brick physics in SMB1/Lost Levels, which was actually a mistake on the developers’ part.
Fun fact at around 3:07 he says the original super Mario Bros is not continuable after you lose all your lives but few people know that when you lose all your lives in the original super Mario Bros if you hold down the start button until you hit the select screen then select the game again you can continue from where you left off
It's very neat seeing this version of SMB1, which seems INCREDIBLY different on the surface, still retain some of the same glitches and underlying mechanics as its older counterpart.
i really enjoy that at 4:25 the lion king level 3 hakuna matata song plays lol, first game i ever finished at age 9, best days that time when games were simple and enjoyable
pal tas is barely 4:51, but it uses many tricks known as "full flagpole glitches", which involves the following inputs: L R L+A R. since pal runs at 50 fps, youll need 5 inputs within a span of 0.08 seconds. afaik this trick had only been performed by a human once, so getting several of these in a row in a speedrun will not happen for a long time with the current knowledge.
While I do like this video, I do think it's very clickbaity as the thumbnail depicts SMB1 when it's really SMB1AS. As 4:53 has been proven physically impossible on SMB1, you're making people think some new discovery/framerule had been found, only to realize (in disappointment) its in all-stars, and I'm pretty sure everyone knows 4:53 is possible in all-stars.
Is it impossible to walljump on the left side in the first Pipeworld? or is it just slower? I mean if u drop and jump from the left wall u could start steering to the right eralier, but it s to late then i guess? :D (i mean for the Left+right tas.. it needs 1 frame haha xD

So why don’t people clip through the staircase for the warp area on 4-2 in the same way the clip through the pipe at the end of 1-2 to get to the warp are??? That would save a lot of time, I think, though I am far from an expert with this stuff.
