  • When she was born nearly a month ago, the cute baby girl weighed in at 251 pounds and was 36 inches tall.
    Since then, Hogle Zoo's new baby elephant has gained another 24 pounds and is an inch taller. "She's a bundle of energy," Doug Tomkinson, Hogle Zoo's lead elephant keeper, said.

    Very cute. Some greenery and a much, much bigger space would be nice. Other female elephant relatives are essential, since they are such intensely social creatures, and young ones are looked after by their mother, older sisters and aunts. I hope the mother is allowed to socialize with others of her kind - otherwise a life of isolation is terrible.

    • @cojonco
      @cojonco 9 лет назад +20

      Regretfully, greenery would be lost on an elephant. Nothing you might plant there could possibly last long enough to satisfy even ONE elephant. They eat as much as hundreds of pounds of greens every day. Elephants are one animal that possibly require more acreage than any zoo could provide in an attempt to match their natural habitat. Another person complained about the mud bath. It's necessary for elephants to protect their sensitive skin. An elephant can feel a fly sitting on it's skin, anywhere that fly decides to sit. The mud protects very sensitive skin.

    • @meso2phile
      @meso2phile 9 лет назад +27

      Yes, that is my point - elephants are animals that do require more acreage than zoos can provide. So... why is this one in a zoo which has no resemblance whatsoever to her natural habitat? Also, yes, mud baths are needed as a sunscreen for them.

      I have to agree with your original post. I love love love that she is ensured protection but I fear a bit of boredom for the two of them confined to that rather tiny space. And I also would like to see a few more elephants in there for them all to socialize and play with.

      Alright as someone who works with Animals that's not their main enclosure, that's just an enclosure so mom and baby can have some alone time where they are not bothered by the other elephants in their herd and the public, it's also where keepers will do check-ups, and exams on the elephants. So they are not in that small enclosure for their entire lives, just for a little while! I appreciate your concern though.

      And yeah, i want them to have have a better life, because unlike you, i don't view myself as a god who have the right to take animals away from their natural habitats and lock them away for my own personal pleasure. I can't say the same for you.

      No it is just right for their immediate needs to bond safely. The veterinarians want to be sure the little sweetie is vaccinated properly and healthy before releasing it and it’s mother. They have a wonderful life ahead of them in the huge sanctuary, where they will be safe from poachers, which occurs when unscrupulous hunters and buyers want a trophy or animal for a zoo and heartlessly separates the mother and baby. You may not know how cruelly they can be trapped and sold. How inhumane one could be to convert a elephants foot into a trash can! There are fewer tragedies that break one’s heart.Mother elephants have grief down themselves to death losing a baby. The heard will be so happy to meet this darling new baby, and guard it as one of their own. It will learn to play and graze with other youngsters, but it won’t get far from it’s mother! Help save the elephants! 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘

      It will have an entire elephant herd, like aunts and uncles and cousins which it will soon meet. They are always so happy to greet and sniff and smell each other. This is called bonding. They know each one by its scent. It’s amazing and wonderful! But just like baby humans, animal conservationists know not to overload the babies with too much information at a time.That blows a fuse, so to speak. Easy does it, and he has plenty to learn, but a long time to learn. We were born not knowing what to do about almost anything. What were our legs for? What to do with our arms? But this baby elephant had to learn as soon as it was born, how to walk, what that long trunk was doing on its face? Where was Mama? But just watch him as he learns and masters each step along the way! He seems so proud of himself, doesn’t he? They listen to each other and learn elephant language.
      It’s awesome, isn’t it? 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘

    I hate zoos, an elephant should be in the wild and if someone wants to see them they can go there. Captivity is cruel elephants are very social and have very strong family ties which these elephants are missing out on. The mother and the baby have been separated from the rest of their family.

    • @kurono122
      @kurono122 8 лет назад +17

      You realize that just by them being in the wild, the possibility of her baby being taken away or killed by poachers is extremely high? And has it ever occurred to you that there may be other elephants at that place and that they were taken out separately so that it won't cause stress on either of them since they have people gawking at them constantly?

    • @4exgold
      @4exgold 8 лет назад +9

      Hikari Angel elephants in the wild are not stressed out by tourists. there's thousands of square miles for them to roam free. if youve ever been in an African national park you would see first hand how relaxed they are because theyre protected. and saying they should be taken into captivity to avoid poaching is as stupid as saying someone should be locked up in prison in case they get murdered someday!

    • @kurono122
      @kurono122 8 лет назад +8

      There are many animals that are endangered that are being saved now because of captivity. Zoos aren't the best, I can agree with that, but reserves or sanctuaries shouldn't let go of animals in danger of being killed. Majority of the last rhinoceros in the world were recently sent to be kept in captivity on a reserve in Australia because of it. Elephants should be out in the wild, but those that can't maybe because of some illnesses or injuries, leave them be where they have a good chance of getting better. And just some news for you, national parks don't stop tourists either. A friend of mine recently went to one as a graduation trip. Several trucks drive by there all the time from tourists according to her. I also can't even count the amount of videos people have taken in those national parks as well

    • @Debbyiamme
      @Debbyiamme 7 лет назад +4

      Also, Elephants and other animals are only protected in the parks in Africa; where there are tourists; if they don't roam outside of the area. And the same as if they are in the parks then there are poachers that are still getting into the parks to kill the elephants. Most zoos now have so many strict regulations on them. Also the elephants are changed through out the day by replacement elephants, so they do have others on the property, at least, at our zoos. They've got plenty of food and water and plenty of room or roam. Another thing is that it is documented that most animals in captivity live years and years longer then they live in the wild. I'm not saying that they should all be taken out of captivity and if I ever see a zoo that isn't running by best strict standards, I will be the first to turn them into the the City, Department of Zoology and every other department that is supposed to be looking out for our animals. Trust me that if the Elephant wanted out then they would be busting out all the time. Sure the ones we get are the sick ones brought back from near death, they get nursed back to health and then they have babies. Not long ago the there were no strict regulations but that God for animal activist who have helped to look out and speak for these animals. I personally know of one Zoo that was shut down and the first to get out of there was the elephants. God Love them because I know all of us here do except for a few crack head that don't know their asses from a hole in the ground.

    not a good area for them. zoos that dont have the space and enrichment should n o t have elephants!!No wonder this is the first time after 90 years...and what kind of a "bath" was that?

    • @RamkumarPerumal-Ram
      @RamkumarPerumal-Ram 9 лет назад +7

      I agree. The worst zoo I have seen where they kept elephants was in Seoul, South Korea -- the entire enclosure was full of hard concrete surface! And the people who were taking pictures seemed to have no clue about the natural environment suitable for elephants. I felt so disturbed. I was never a big fan of zoos before that, and I have never been to a zoo anywhere since that visit, more than 10 years ago.

      Zoos are updating their enclosures for elephants that has much more room and allows for them to have all of their needs met.
      But there are bad zoos as well as good ones

      Ramkumar Perumal best zoos I've ever been to was in Arizona, USA, closest thing I've seen to a zoo... safari. They laid it out great so the animals had optimal space to roam and have fun and the guest had minimal walking times. Sadly no elephants, but it would have been the perfect place for them.

    1:30 am on a snowy Montana night in October 2021 and I'm watching a baby elephant that is much like a human toddler- going constantly!! What fun!! I'm reminded of a caption from a family circus comic strip- Gramma tells mom who's surrounded by children, enjoy them every minute dear, before you know it they'll be grown and gone!

    due to the fact that the ban on elephant hunting has been partially lifted and there is a tremendous amount of poaching, elephants are bound to become extinct in the wild by 2025. there is one elephant being shot every 15 minutes, mostly for ivory which is being consumed on asian markets. when they kill an elephant cow they often leave the calf alive. rescue missions such as the sheldrick trust in kenya look for these orphans and try and nurse them back to health. the problem is that elephants are extremely sensitive and these calves often die from the mental pain of witnessing their mother's slaughter.

      The big pharmaceutical companies discovered the profit to be made if the psychological community could diagnose childhood as a mental disorder. So the American Psychological Association set out to give it a name and they came up with "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder". Now big Pharma, in conjunction with the psychological community, are reaping whirlwind profits at the expense of children who wish nothing more than to have a childhood which is unfettered by daily drugging.
