Engraving an iconic Steve Jobs photo into epoxy using CNC machining. This was made using less than 3 quarts of epoxy and a scrap piece of plywood which cost $48.00. I designed this image on Vectric Aspire using the Photo Vcarve program. I used a 60-degree Vbit to do the cutout. This process took me 3 days of waiting and about 2 hours of work.

After watching this video and the previous one of John Wayne and liking this one a lot better. Can you please list the Epoxy Resins that you used. There are so many available, that it makes it hard and potentially very expensive to determine which epoxies one should use. I have both VCarve and PhotoCarve, but I have another which I would love to try as it is specifically designed for recreating pictures into CNC Art that was around long before VCarve and its many offshoots was available and known as BMP2CNC.

Hello dear friend Thank you for this good clip. I did your idea, but I had a problem in cleaning the surface of the paint. To be more clear, my question is: What tool did you attach to the spindle and use it to clean the surface of the paint? And how long should I wait for the paint to dry? (Do I have to wait for the paint to dry completely and then clean the surface, or is it enough to dry a little and then proceed to cleaning)
Thank you for the help - wasn't happy with my "wood" photos. Went to the epoxy with white base and black powder. Awesome! Wish I knew how to attach a photo to this comment.

I too enjoy photo V-Carving into Oak, Mahogany, Pine etc. but my results vary drastically.
I find that my selection of images has a lot to do with how well the carving comes out.
I’m trying to reproduce an old photo sent to me thru e-mail and not having much luck.

When you leveled the white, ran the file poured on the black working it in, then did you level the black to the exact Z height that you leveled the white at?

which vbit you used, and how many inches is it?
If your epoxy gives you enough working time to clean up, drawing it around with a piece of threaded rod will give a fairly uniform layer & keep from under filling any areas.
how do you import the image/file you're trying to carve did you have to edit the image to get the most realism

So you just paste a picture into v carve/aspire and it maps out the carve perfectly? Or was the image pre designed in a way to be carved? Can I do this with any photo without too much trouble?

John Wayne ALWAYS went 100%
so u did 1st white epoxy ,carve with these settings ,then u add black epoxy and run it again on same settings ?
he first added white epoxy to his board. after that he ran a 60 deg v bit to engrave the image into the white epoxy. next came pouring black epoxy on to fill the grooves. once that was set, he used a surfacing bit to clean off the surface to get rid of the over-pour on the black which just left the black that was in the v grooves.

that was my question! this whole video changed my understanding of photo vcarve. here's my notes I wrote down after viewing this video "He fly cut to get the final image !!! No sanding and image came out great. He didn't say how he flycut. Maybe start high and move lower? You could keep cutting lower and lower till you get what you want. I still don't know how this would work. Isn't there multiple depths created by the vcarve? Maybe not, he used a 0.07 max cut depth so maybe the blacks are created by varying the width of the groove cut while maintaining the same depth. This would mean that the flycut method would work. You just need to get the right depth and you could find this depth by trial and error. Start high and then move lower. Maybe if max cut depth is 0.07 in then the cut depth might be 0.03 or somewhere near this." thanks, you have given me some things to think about. fly cutting makes this process much easier as I had been sanding to get to the final image.

Well done! Actually think it turned out better than the John Wayne you did previously. Looks like there is another one laying on ground - how many tries did it take to have such a good result.

MrCcfly on the ground - right side while he is first holding up epoxy board explaining what he is going to do. It may be a different picture or it may even be the same one with him filming the intro after he did the first version. I was just curious if it took multiple tries to get the right settings.

@@cutting-it-close No brasil trabalhamos com milímetros, não estou acertando as configurações, quais profundidades seria em milímetros? Eu uso uma VBIT de 90º de 0.1mm a ponta e 6mm de haste

@@cutting-it-close I did not understand how it was the path that generated to remove the excess epoxy, I believe it is a fill, but the doubt is, how deep did you put FlyCut to pass, and if the Z axis was zeroed over the material ???

I've done both ways... John Wayne and Steve Jobs. They do not come out the same. Either he's not showing us everything or it's photo shop. He don't give you how far he's sanding down in John Wayne one or this one . So I can't say for sure
@@cutting-it-close on john wayne did you sand the raised lines all the way down or just cleaned the lines and then painted and then sand the raised lines down? your help would be very appreciated i have to do one of a friends son who died of heat stroke this last year. no matter what i do it dont work.
