This feels like such a breath of fresh air. To be so honest and vulnerable about this feels so reassuring. I have just done my biggest wedding season yet and having that post wedding burnout is really getting to me and seeing this just has been great to hear. All the best for all your future weddings.

Oh dude! The burnout is real!! I had such bad burnout at the end of last year’s season. I think it was only because we decided to change direction that I got excited about weddings again.

Josh, wow man props to being so open and vulnerable. It's crazy the pressure we put on ourselves as wedding filmmakers, but also goes to show how much we care about showing up for your clients, our business, and creating art. That's why I appreciate the wedding filmmaker community so much. You said it yourself, you haven't failed, and we're all learning.
Also, the videos you've been putting out here have been top tier quality and just wanted to say that I love your work and style! Looking forward to seeing more!

Great video! Your honesty and how you've pointed out very clearly what a failing wedding videographer has to do to save his business nowadays is rather unique and rare. I've had some of these ideas in the back of my mind for a while now, but I was dreading the day I would be forced to actually implement them. Why? Because when I started my wedding videography business I was already passionate about filmmaking and anything related to movie production. I started out believing that I had a personal vision for my wedding films, a vision which customers would find appealing and this would be the main driving force of the business, along with the former clients's recommendations to new clients. In my mind, what mattered most was what I filmed on the wedding day and how I edited it and if the client was happy. Should this not be enough? Why is it that nowadays wedding videographers are basically "at the bottom of the food chain", so to speak? If you need to get on the good side of the wedding florist (no disrespect for what they do, but just saying) and give them free advertising videos in 48hrs after the event, in the hopes that they might recommend you to future clients, then I think you should switch businesess and move up the food chain. Shouldn't other wedding vendors be contacting us and paying us to make them advertising videos? If nowadays for your videos to be "better" you need to look at and copy the style of other successful wedding videographers then what's the point of doing this in the first place if you don't believe in your own filmmaking vision? If we need to be researching to see what people want to watch on instagram and "invent" fake wedding content just to get views and not use our own wedding content then, again, it seems our business is becoming irrelevant. What advice would I give to anyone starting out as a wedding videographer? If you like or even love filmmaking and video editing DO NOT start a wedding videography business unless you only view it strictly as just a business like any other. Do not mix your passion for filmmaking or video in it, only do what is required for you to succeed as a business. Sorry for being blunt, but it generally seems that the wedding videography business, as a service/industry, will eventually become extinct and replaced either with social media creators which will use a phone to produce wedding content, or by a subscription based app.

It's awesome to see such vulnerability and honesty, and I have to think that shooting and editing this was cathartic for you in many ways. As someone starting out in the wedding business right now (I shot one wedding four years ago), it's really helpful to see how you're learning from your mistakes. Just know that you haven't FAILED (though it's a great title), and that you're taking all the right steps to grow. You have everything you need to be successful - whatever that means to you. 👊🏻❤
