    Bob of Bob, Bob and Bob. Thank you for the OSHA/Firefighter's data on ladder safety. I never go 32 feet on my extension ladder, but the three points of contact rule of ladder safety was very important to highlight. Thank you so much for that education as well as the importance of the caulk around the edge of the gable vent. Regards, Leslie

    Do you know what I do? I use a putty knife. I stuck it between the framing and the vent to locate the fasteners. Then I set the blade on the screw/nail and I hit it with my hammer (to break it). Or I'll remove the louvers and go from there. Sometimes the trim will come off, with exposes the fasteners

      Drip edge looks so ugly lol. I just j channel the whole square and use protecto wrap behind and around it all, then silicone caulk the small gap around the vent that sits inside the j channel. I never use drip edge at all anymore unless above a door with trim on top

      Just go up in your attic and measure the existing vent. Now hopefully you have a little wiggle room between your vent and the studs. Order a new PVC gable vent that is slightly larger. Place the new gable vent over your cedar shakes and trace around the nail fin. Take an oscillating tool and cut on your line. Then nail the new gable vent to the sheathing. Cover the nail fin with your building paper. Run a bead of caulk around the entire vent and then install 5/4 window casing to cover the nail fan and meet with your cedar shake.

    Would you do this if the house had aluminum siding?

    • @randomreviews595
      @randomreviews595 Год назад +1

      Yes, except. What you should do is make the vent center, cut the siding square, make it equal so the vent fits center, adding 1/16 on each side for j channel to fit. You need to get some flashing tape it’s the 9 inch wide one protecto wrap at the Home Depot, the j channel is a big long 1/2 pvc j channel in the wood depot also, you’ll probably have to make the frame to match the new vent with some 2x4 or plywood, mount the vent, flash tape it starting at the bottom and overhang the sides.. then you flash tape the sides and overlap the bottom and extend up above it.. then you flash tape the top so it over hangs the side pieces.. that way no water gets in.. this guy just put a little bead of caulk… that’s the fast way, then you mount your j channel in.. if you really want to know how to do this fully, msg me back and I’ll email or text ya dude

    14:13 The siding was cut correctly around the original vent, your replacement doesn’t fit the siding. Your caulk might fill the gaps, but it looks like 💩

  • @regressmenot
    @regressmenot 3 месяца назад

    Were you attempting to distract from the fact you don't know what you're doing installing a gable vent with the tedious ladder safety briefing?
    The vent you installed is too small for the pre-existing hole cut in the siding.
    You either replace the siding to close that enormous gap or you get a vent larger than the pre-existing hole.
    Then you cut the siding to accommodate the new larger vent.
