This was really nice. Years ago I taught calligraphy (English), and for some styles a circle is very important. So to start my students I would line the walls with paper & have them start making huge circles, then gradually make them smaller & smaller while trying to retain the sense of it being done with the whole body, even when it was now being done small & with a pen. Because I believe that the movement originates from a place other than the hand and that if you have captured & can channel that energy, you will be able to do it with every part of your body.

Great application to the art! Sensei Ray, you have truely proven that the understanding of the core principles of martial arts can be applied to other arts as well and the connection between the brush and the sword/footwork. I hope to be as refined as you have become! Great video and hope to see you again soon!

For people who dont know what the circle is, it's called the Enso, and it's mostly drawn with calligraphy. The Enso or 'Zen' circle means enlightenment, Void, Incompleteness, And The nature of zen.

A superb piece. This is an excellent representation of the scholar/warrior lifestyle and ideal. I hope to see more of this kind of "Martial Fine Art" in the future!

This is very interesting and inspiring Ray, thank's for posting and sharing you're thought's. I am also interested in the links between Budo and other Japanese arts and I plan to take up Shodo in the near future it's an aspect I have always wanted to investigate as a Budoka.

Greetings, enjoyed your video and your comments. I teach Cha-no-yu and find that helping others (and myself) understand and apply the principles and actions from practice beyond the Tearoom and as the fabric of their life is the real practice of Do.

I would be so gratefuL if you could post a link to your friend who was classically trained in calligrapy. I see you made your own brush with her instruction. Ultimately, I would live to make my own brush.
Is that shrink plastic covering a bamboo ferrel? These magnificent big brushes cost around $700.- to buy.
I am fascinated by these huge ink creations & performances. Thankyou kindly for your response.

Then that's what he makes. Look up enso. It's a practice, a daily meditation thing, so if you're not peaceful and collected within, then you just may end up making an oval, but that's fine. That's what you created at that moment, in that day, when you were immersed in those feelings, emotions, and situations in that day, at that moment. It's kind of like your external actions and your external products, your fruits, will reflect what's going on within you.
