Installation of Microwave Roof Vent on New DR Horton Home (use rigid duct, not flexible!)

- The DR Horton Range Hood Microwave did not come with a vent out the roof. So I had to install one.
NOTE - I have since been informed that flexible ducting is not up to code. Use rigid ducting! I have since swapped out the ducting for rigid ducting
The parts I used were a stack hood (3.25 x 10) offset transitioning into a 6" round duct, and two 6" round ducts 8' long. Also a couple of 6" pipe connectors, ducting tape, and some loctite multi purpose sealing foam. Parts cost was about $80.
I paid a roof guy $150 for the installation of the louver vent in the roof. I didn't feel comfortable cutting a hole in my roof, and I'm pretty sure it would have voided the 10 year warranty on my brand new house... so I had the DR Horton roof guy do it instead!
Message me or comment if you have any questions.
that video was awesome i am shocked i found it. I bought a dr horton express 2 yrs ago and i cant believe how cheap everything is in my house. I am slowly replacing everything.
You bought an express home what did you expect? DR Horton is a terrible builder. Garbage house will fall apart within 5-10 years
Flex duct piping for vent hoods does not meet most building codes
Thanks. I have since learned this is true and I have replaced the ducting with rigid ducts.
Looks like a good time to move the receptacle over 6”.
Thank you
So helpful 🍻
Do not use flex duct. Not code in most states for range exhaust.
Yeah, i read that oil can get caught up in it and it probably causes resistance to air flow.
I did that job once and had a piece of stainless steel cut to be a three sided box that I put on top of the cabinet, so it looked like a duct
so that box was not connected to a duct and vented outside originally?
@@jicalzad what I created was just something that looked like a square stainless steel vent. It just covered the ductwork to make it look more finished.
Nice job!!
Thank you! Mine has this but water just leaked down the vent and on my counter tops. It’s not raining out and only thing we had the tub running. But it’s in the cabinet and microwave. Any advice ??
Editing my comment - just saw you said it's NOT raining outside. This probably means you have a water leak in the attic somewhere near where this pipe is installed. It's possible a nail or staple hit something. If it's a VERY SMALL amount of water it could be condensation but if it's a noticeable amount of water then it's probably a leak that needs to be fixed ASAP
Let me know if you fixed the thin doors and or put insulation in the walls for noise cancellation. Thats my next project, i hate the large gaps under the doors and inside the house has no insulation just the outer walls.
In State of CA Not flexible only solid screw with 1/4 head screws and tape with code tape with flipper the video wont pass inspection
Thank you. Luckily not in CA, but in my state I was made aware flexible ducting is not up to code. I have since replaced the ducting with solid.
How do I take out the microwave? I tried but there seems to be a bunch of those tapes and not sure if its a good idea to just pull it out. My microwave’s fan stopped working and I wanted to check things out.
You'll have to remove enough tape to find the screws that are holding the microwave up. They should be towards the front of the cabinet. There are usually 2 or 3 screws holding the microwave in from the top on the front. Then the microwave will tilt downwards. It is being held in the back on the bottom by a mounting plate that is screwed into the wall.
@@marcantonio152 yes but when I pull the microwave down it felt like Im pulling out the duct(?), I don’t exactly know what is attached to the microwave but it seems like theres a bunch of tape just like the ones in your video. Would it be safe to just pull down the microwave?
The damper valve can be screwed in. You might need to take the tape off to find out. If you don't, pulling it down could cause some damage.
Frigidaire microwave vented at the top
Also i had a ton of problems that they fixed so let me if you have any and i will share.
Interested. Been in a dr home for 2 months.
Should air still come out from the front top?
No, not if you did the first part by unscrewing the fans, taking them out, orienting them to the top, and screwing them back in. It should vent out the top.
@@marcantonio152ok just making sure. I have one and it has the vent running to the top but it blows through the front top.
You shouldn't get any air out of the front of the unit. It should all be blowing out of the duct.
DR Horton roof guy do it instead! ?? How did you find a DR,Horton roofer
I asked our foreman for the neighborhood to give me the contact info for the company that did the roofs
Is it possible to run the duct work in the wall instead of inside the cabinet?
Not directly. The vent comes out of the top of the microwave. So the duct has to begin from the top.
sound gone 2:30 to 2:37
thanks, I don't think there ever was any sound there. just me measuring the duct.
