Pac-Mac RLX Rear Loader: City of Arcadia

  • The post-Christmas glut of garbage provided the perfect opportunity to revisit Arcadia, FL and their two truck strong rear load fleet. Although essentially a bargain basement rear load body and chassis, the Pac-Mac/Ford combination doesn't struggle too much with the route. No doubt the packer geometry could be better when it comes to clearing commodity in the hopper during the first half of the pack cycle, as evidenced by all the spillage onto the street, but I'm sure part of the reason for the messiness is a crew used to less-frequent hopper cycles on a usually much lighter route. Nevertheless Pac-Mac sites an exceedingly optimistic 3.6 yard hopper volume (Compare to the 2RIII's 3.5 yards). Packer cylinder arrangement is unusual. Similar to the sort of "offset-pusher" type like on the 2R/II/IIIs and McNeilus, but with the stationary ends of the cylinders mounted to the inner sides of the tailgate instead of a brace spanning the width of the hopper. The smallest Loadmaster body uses a similar setup.
    The Ford F-750 is a departure from the usual International or Freightliner and made for quite the treat. There wasn't quite as much of the signature Ford air brake sound as I was hoping for, but some squeaking and hissing still made its way to the microphone. Might just come down to gentle pedal application on the part of the driver.
    Thanks to Chris and the rest of the crew, as well as FormerWMDriver. Filmed December 29, 2014.

    Have to admit George, it's rough seeing so much spillage, perhaps a 2-3 inch panel to close off part of the hopper, might help.

    I like how open the tailgate is. Would be easy to clean, or to work on. In fact, everything about that tailgate and body looks easy to wash down. And the access door is HUGE!. You can see it around 2:20 Good find, and good video.

      Reserector Both are good points. By eschewing the horizontal brace across the hopper area and instead mounting the ends of the slide cylinders to the tailgate sidewalls Pac Mac made maintenance access very easy. Same goes for the massive door on the side, definitely jumped out at me when I first saw the truck.

    This is pretty cool, first time I've seen a Pac-Mac and also first time I've seen one of these Fords being used for the medium sized truck it is. Heard plenty of the loud screaming during the packing, sounded pretty sick from 5:59 coming up the road =] I couldn't help but notice this truck also had a white flasher in the top right corner of the tailgate instead of a brighter colour - thought it was a reverse light, so I was tripping out when I saw it flashing during pick-up haha Yep that bite the packer takes of the hopper isn't really too great, quite pathetic really, but I guess it's fine if these guys usually only collect half of what they do. Funny it's a decent size tailgate, but the packer sits low and the sweeping volume is shit - be fantastic for reeving a 6yd or something :P Otherwise the packer in general looks pretty rugged; ribbed plates and beefy cylinders so she'd pack alright eh? Also had to chuckle at the start of the first clip with the other loader just hanging off the tailgate while the other guy did all the work, clearly he underestimated what was actually set-out there lol

      MitchellM15 I learned a bit about these Pac-Mac bodies at WasteExpo. Doubt you'll see many more any time soon. They predominantly sell direct from the manufacturer rather than through a dealer, so their market penetration is pretty much limited to the Louisiana, Mississippi, and surrounding areas nearer to the Pac-Mac factory, with a sparse dealer network elsewhere. They're fairly overbuilt and will apparently pack 1000lbs/yd stock, and an example has been modified by the company with a higher pressure pump as a test to pack even tighter with no ill effects so far. Still not sold on the packer geometry when it comes to clearing the pile of trash in the hopper but I don't think it's a deal breaker, depending on your application. As for the Fords, they used to see much more medium duty market share but it has steadily declined in recent years. Perhaps the new 2016 model will turn sales around. The white strobe on the tailgate is technically illegal, Florida only allows white strobe lights on school buses and construction vehicles. I assume the local police have better things to do. Noticed the same thing about the helper in the first clip, I assume he was fairly new to the job.

    Nice catch! Pretty neat little RL company. They don't look to bad at all! Pretty damn efficient to. I love more local refuse body manufacturers. Any idea how long they've been around?

      Thanks! Their website says RLs were added to the product line in the early 90s. I agree, a good looking truck and a very cool company which I genuinely hope sees continued success. Would love to see them build up a dealer network and expand their products line. Word on the street is a 13-16 yard rear loader is in the works. That's a high volume market, they could really give the currently dominant New Way a run for their money.

    very poor hopper design the blade is too low and it causes it to push trash out of the hopper onto the street

    • @georgewuzheer
      @georgewuzheer  9 лет назад

      It's a brilliantly capable mid-range rear loader. It's just the rated hopper capacity that's a bit of a stretch. Best compared to the Leach Alpha or Heil PT1000.
