I love Johnny’s interpretation of Sweeney Todd. He doesn’t seem like an evil man he seems like a man who loves his wife and daughter and is so filled with anger he kills. I see a broken man who just wants his family back
I liked his interpretation, but I disagree with your comment. In fact, in the movie, Sweeney is portrayed way more evil than he is in the musical. He lacks empathy and emotional response. He seems much “darker” and dead inside. I loved the movie, and I love the character, but I wouldn’t say it was my favorite interpretation of Sweeney. He lacked... a more human personality I guess.

I'm a bit late, bur I partically disagree with you. Tho he isn't evil, he lost his mind when Turpin left her barber shop. He became mad, and not evil. He wanted revenge, and his family back so much, that he killed everyone who stepped in.

I kinda want to see Burton do more live action musical film adaptations of gothic broadway works. I think he really gets the aesthetic just right, and it's so great. Personally I think a Burton-led film version of the Jekyll and Hyde musical would be really fun to watch.

i would say the scariest song was God thats good. that was freaking terrifying. seeing all those customers eating the pies and becoming cannibals without even knowing. so messed up. but scarriest scene... hmmm... i don’t find the movie very scary, just freaking messed and dark. hmmm... maybe when sweeney kills mrs lovett. freaky death. or maybe when toby realizes the meat pies are made outta humans. the visuals give me goosebumps

Not the best interpretation of the musical (at least not the most accurate to Sondheim’s rendition), but definitely pretty good.
i know i shouldnt, but i do absolutely love this movie. because 1. johnny depp, helena bonham carter, and alan rickman (my fav 3 actors) 2. its tim burton’s 3. the singing and song writing was great 4. the entire cast did perfect in their roles, 5. the makeup, outfits, art, and atmosphere was perfect. and storyline was just well i don’t even know what to say. but a movie where the main protagonists are more evil than the antagonists? i never see movies like that. and to think a musical could be so dramatic and tragic and depressing and so dark and freaky yet still have good songs. i must say, in the song God thats good, it freaks me out so much especially when they sing “eat them slow and fill the crust at thinner roll” and u just see everyone eating the pies

I swear Johnny Depp plays the character so well emotionally that when he killed the judge I felt heartwarmed by it. Just looking at him get what he desired for so long is so beautiful. With any other character I would have not been so in love but Johnny Depp played the emotional part of him so well. It’s gorgeous.

The story was pretty much perfect for Burton's sort of gothic creepy direction, I'll say that much. But that said, I still haven't seen this movie. I guess I'll just have to try not to compare it to the musical, which I saw performed by the New Zealand Opera Company (plus a guy I'd known since middle school was Toby - he just posted on Facebook about it being his last performance tonight (needless to say, he's a lot older in the musical than in the movie).
Hannah Shribman-Brown you should totally watch it! It's one of the best tim burton movies!
Now I've seen it, and I like it. Not as much as the musical, and I still think Helena Boneham Carter was majorly miscast - she's just not malicious enough - but otherwise it was good, and I was right about Burton's direction being a perfect fit for the material. Also, a lot of songs were cut down or left out completely, like Judge Turpin's "Johanna" and Änthony and Johanna's "Kiss Me". Plus the opening song "The Ballad Of Sweeney Todd" and its many reprises all cut out, although it's still recognizable in the instrumentals, especially this one part: "Swing your razor high, Sweeney, hold it to the sky..." Still disappointed about the song being cut out as it is an overarching piece for the musical, but oh well. Originally the opening would have the ghosts of Sweeney's victims singing it, but the other reprises probably would've been cut out anyway - hard to translate to film.
@@strawberrysoulforever8336 Tho I haven't seen the musical yet, I agree with you, but I think they left some of the songs out, because it would have been too long, for a movie. If we think about this as a simple movie by Tim Burton, I think it's pretty awesome. I think the actors and the whole team did a great job.

Many problems the movie had that wasn't in the musical was actually in Musical Hell's review, that is up here (she reviews film adaptations of musicals, mostly bad). She didn't think it was as bad as most musical movies she reviewed, praising several areas, but also listed several problems.
isnt he supposed to be like 50 in the play? johnny depp at this time was in his 40s or 50s. i must say, johnny always looks so much younger than he is though. even now he’s still hot as always

johnny did amazing as sweeney todd and now that i think about it, even though this isnt my fav role he’s ever done, it’s probably his best. how much emotion he put in it was amazing. and the dramatic singing making it even though he’s singing its not joyous or funny or happy at all and its still so scary and dark. and his singing voice was beautiful. and the visuals and his facial expressions and voice really added to the drama and his emotions. u could see and really feel how sweeney todd was a poor depressed man and how much longing and love he had for lucy and how he was the victim yet at the same u could feel how much anger he had and how it drove him to evil and insanity. u could really feel it all at the same time. only johnny could do a character so perfectly when it comes to playing weird roles

i usually hate horror movies but i love this. if this movie didn’t have tim burton and johnny depp, i wouldve never even watched it. and no one could ever do a better job at playing sweeney todd than johnny depp. u can really feel the emotion and the darkness and evil in sweeney yet you can still feel a poor depressed man and a victim and so much anger and u can feel the love and longing in his heart for lucy. all at the same time u can just feel it in johnny’s acting. its perfect.
I am not a fan of musicals but I will just say this. From beginning to end I love Sweeney Todd. It captures me and doesn’t let me go. I love the musical so much that I have actually performed Sweeney Todd on stage once or twice.
This movie is not for everyone its heavy and hard to watch and u need to have abit of dark sense of humor too however i suggest this movie to people that are into acting and like character devolopment and catchy phrases its pretty epic :P have fun

i love the songs in this movie. when i first watched the movie, i couldnt really tell if i liked it or not. i mostly wanted to watch it because it had my fav actors in it and i love all of tim burton's films. my fav movie is the nightmare before christmas, after all.

I love this movie for its own merits, but also because I first saw it during a very up-n-down period in my life, and it helped me get through it. It will always have a special place in my memory.

I loved the stage version that my local mystery theatre put on, as well as this movie version. I love this story when it's done well.
I really like how they casted Alan Rickman as Turpin who is in sort a bad guy in the story and Alan Rickman's deep voice and the little pauses in between sentences and the way he speaks the lines is perfect and makes for good pieces of speech. Rip Alan rickman

It’s a amazing movie idc who you are. The actors where amazing , the songs don’t take away from the dark/horror/feelings/ comedy. I got emotional at the end when pretty much everyone dies, I know they weren’t good people but still... and you could atleast explain what happens to the others before ending it..l oh well still amazing
