    That patu is frigging gorgeous.... hell it wouldn't be hard to convince me to give up my duty ASP or Casco if I was allowed to carry a patu that size or a little longer. I know I'd definitely carry it off duty as my impact option 😁

      @@KoaStudio it gives you options lol..... flat side if the assaulter is mildly ornery and needs a bit of a reminder on manners..... edge side if one is well past the point of polite discourse 😅😂🤣

    Alot of time and effort go into keeping the weight balanced when making a patu also like the Taiaha there many different forms and variations on use🙏🏾 most of NZ Maori martial arts is deceptive so its hard to understand the full power of our weapons unless u are shown proper technique and form😁✌🏾 it just my opinion but I hope that helps brutha🙏🏾 Much love and thank you🤎🙏🏾 keep doing what u do💯 #nzmaorilove

    • @KoaStudio
      @KoaStudio  3 года назад +1

      Balance is a tricky thing haha. I tend to make my pieces a bit thick on the handle but that is because I am making them to fit me.. so it’s weight and feel fit the size of my hand and strength. In the hands of a trained martial artist for that style of weapon, I wonder how they would like it 🤔🤔

      I grew up mostly in Hawai’i but my family is a massive mix of cultures so growing up with a love and passion for everyone’s history is what I try to add into my art. First learned on Hawaiian weapons but love to extend that to surrounds cultures and weapons as well. Mahalo plenty for your support! Very humbling! 😊

    I am convinced. Koa is the prettiest wood! it's always so satisfying when it get's oiled.
    How was the club used? Was it a primary, a secondary, did people dual wield them?

    • @KoaStudio
      @KoaStudio  3 года назад

      I would have to agree 😁 the patu could be used as both a primary and secondary. It was used with quick power strikes focusing the energy of the swing on the edge or blade of the patu. I don’t know if they duel wielded them but i don’t think so. Maori warriors like Hawaiians tended to fight largely in Melee range so the use of the patu and or mere would not be uncommon.

    • @michaeloxlarge4345
      @michaeloxlarge4345 4 месяца назад

      Maori did dual wield patu, the patu swims like a fish using a stabbing motion, these short powerful jabs would be aimed at soft vulnerable places like the mouth and neck.

    What do you think is the most deadly weapon you've made?

    • @KoaStudio
      @KoaStudio  3 года назад +4

      Good question 🤔 I know generally how the weapons I’ve made were used but I am not martially trained. Some of these weapons are used like blades and leave deep lacerations. Some are blunt force and can honestly drop a person in a single well placed hit. Each of these weapons were designed for specific uses and fulfilled them beautifully. But, since I’m not trained, from my experience I would say the Hawaiian axes have cut the deepest. But the way the Taiaha cut through 1” wood dowel like it was nothing. That across the face 😳 or even neck! Haha it’s hard to pick honestly!

    How would people make those without power tools?

    • @KoaStudio
      @KoaStudio  3 года назад +2

      In Hawaii and many islands they would use hand tools made from stone and natural materials and use stuff like lava rock and sand as an abrasive(sandpaper).

    • @KoaStudio
      @KoaStudio  3 года назад +1

      I am very familiar with a few different Haka dances such as the “Ka mate”. But I have never performed it. The Haka is a Maori dance and they are considered sacred. There are some wide known ones but when performed for a specific occasion it is not uncommon for a Haka to be written by an elder for that specific use. There are similar dances in almost all of the Polynesian islands of the pacific.
