The Meaning of Saint Peter’s Name

There is an interesting story behind St. Peter’s name in the gospels.
He was actually born with the name Simon son of Jonah, but Jesus gave him the name Peter instead. This is why St. Peter goes by a few different names in the gospels: Peter, Simon, and sometimes Simon Peter.
The name comes from a story in Matthew 16 in which Peter correctly identifies Jesus as the Messiah. Then Jesus says:
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Mt 16:17-19)
The name Peter comes from the Greek word petra, which means rock.
In a similar way, St. Paul often refers to Peter by the Aramaic version of his name, Cephas. The name Cephas comes from the Aramaic word kefa, which also means rock.
Years after Jesus’s death and resurrection, Peter became a central figure in the Church. He traveled to Rome, the capital of the Empire, and there he led the growing Christian Church as the first bishop of Rome. As the first bishop of Rome he is also the first Pope after which all popes have succeed him in a line up until today.
