Show your support buy getting me an extra cup of coffee today ( Can never get enough when you've got a couple of toddlers haha , thanks! :D) - bit.ly/3zxOUJ5
Just changed out the coupler on mine. Your video made the process much smoother by knowing what to expect. Definitely a two person job.
So glad I found this. I had replaced the trolley to no avail. The Genie has been going strong for 24 years without a problem until this simple, inexpensive fix.
By the way, the pronouncing for coupling is cup' ling. Like a coffee cup.
The video is very helpful!!
I was a younger buck then 😅
Thanks for putting this video together. It helped me find the root cause of my broken garage opener.
Great video. thanks for posting. My Genie G2500, installed in approx. 2000, had the same symptoms, but doesn't have a coupling. But I found by tightening the clutch nut, on the motor shaft by the clutch spring, it solved the problem. Try that before taking down the opener.
I have the Genie red box installed around 2001. When replacing it, I tried to follow the video to discover that there is no "coupling", and that the motor has hollow shaft where the screw goes in as a single piece. To remove it, one has to remove the enclosure, unscrew the rear nut, remove the lock nut (and also the key in the keyed shaft) and only then the entire first section of the screw comes out... This is probably the earlier version of door opener - more reliable but noisy and difficult to disassemble.
Correct, being 20 years old it may be a better idea to replace the whole unit and it sounds like you’re handy enough to do so? Depending where you’re at you can get a brand new unit for relatively cheap for example: amzn.to/3oXGxmw
I'm now hearing the "clicking" sound as the door is near fully open so I suspect this coupler is on it's way out. Best to change it before it fails. Great tutorial.
Great video. Thank you!
great straight forward instructions, thank you!
A good DIY job to do together for a married coople.
Indeed
On Genie’s it’s hard to tell when it was built it’s not like a Chamberlain product where you know when you program it.
can i just replace the motor without the screw and track ? 1/2 hp ,,,everything is good ,,,thank you
You’d have to look around for something like that, I’ve never done it that way usually just update
I have a Genie Pro Screwdrive, that when you push the button it just makes a humming noise. Sensors are fine. I checked the capacitator and replaced it. (looked like it leaked). Same noise, so my question is would you have any dea what it is?
See my coupler replacement video ? Is it just a hum or does it sound like it’s trying to spin the screw ?
Looks like there is four or five washers behind that coupling. Any chance you could do another video showing removing the silver bearing looking thing right behind the coupler and then show what order those washers/bearings go. I feel like I may have retaining clip that got destroyed because when I put everything back together the door raised but the whole long screw/worm gear got pushed out toward the front of the garage toward the driveway
Jacob Gilchrist I haven’t been able to make any videos lately due to my living situation but I should be starting up again soon. As for the washers I’ve honestly never had to mess with them to change the coupler. Did your back end break ? You may be working with a different model ?
Is it still the coupling if my garage door opens about 2 feet up and stop? It makes a loud grading noise and gear is still turning. It can close still also once I lock it back.
Gong Tanyakorndilok check our trolley change video. That sounds more like the issue you’re having .
could this be the culprit if my garage door only opens up to sensor height?
problem started when the garage door would not close because the pulley cables came off on both sides and that extra weight on one side and caused the rail to bend. I straightened the rails and put the cables on the wheels but now my door will only open up to sensor height
JesAg sounds like your torsion spring is broken my friend. I think professional help would be best with that particular repair.
My retaining ring on the screw drive bearing head is broke. Any idea where to find replacement parts for the Genie screwdrive pro CM7600?
Joel C not quite sure I know exactly which part you’re talking about..

THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I was finally able to fix the issue. For the longest I didn't know what the problem was.
My neighbor looked at the motor and saw what t he issue was. I came here, watched this video, ordered the part, and BAM---FIXED!! Thank you!
Hi, I’m trying to figure out the model number for this unit so I can call the support line. My model number tag is covered up by my mounting bracket and I can’t access it without unmounting the unit. Can you help me out?
David Flores can you email me a photo?
My genie pro screw drive stops spinning when the carriage is engaged. Could this maybe be the problem? Thanks.
Sounds like it yes
Sorry for the late response!
I've pronounced it both ways and my opener is still screwed up.
😂
Hi my geniepro screw drive randomly stops and near the noise of the motor but no movement. So do you think I have the coupler issue? Someone came by and said need to change the circuit board? So need advice on what could be wrong. Thanks
Sounds like capacitor to me, did you get it fixed ?
Sorry for the late response.
Thank you for getting back to me and following up. I did get a technician to fix it and it was the capacitor was the issue. Thanks appreciate ur txt.
I replaced the new coupler and limit switch , then , operated garage door open . It always push screw drive out . Please help me to fix this problem .
Thanks
Hello, what exactly does it push out ?
By the video, I removed the screw shaft, but the coupling remained in the bore of the motor shaft. Have not been able to remove it with needle-nose-plyers, need help, Little John.
John Conway if you could send me photos I’d be happy to help.
Use my websites contact page and I’ll reply
Other YT videos apparently easily made in situ clearly show how easy this is. Use a long flat screwdriver, place blade into opening of the cupler and try to pivot it outwards, it might take a few tries.
I just changed this 10 minutes ago, easy stuff.
I should have recorded it...Hope you fixed it 2 years ago!
Hello. I was wondering if you could help me. My genie screw drive is making a humming noise and I changed the capacitor thinking that was the problem. Unfortunately it wasn’t and I noticed the motor not spinning. Any idea on what the problem could be?
If you changed the capacitor with the same one and it’s still doing the same thing, it’s most likely the motor itself. You could try logic board but honestly that sounds older than it’s worth?
Thank you for posting. By the way, it's pronounced "cup-ling" not coop-ling. LOL
B Mode lol my brothers give me crap about it all the time. Thanks though 😂
@@GarageDoorGuidance dont change a thing, love your gentle easy-going presentation style
G Lasser thank you! Honestly just doing what I can to help no gimmicks. Not a lot of people do that nowadays
@@GarageDoorGuidance you're an Ace, damn the torpedoes.
👍🏻
Is coopling the same as spooning?
Screw not spinning there is just a loud buzzer sound when you push the garage door or remote button.
Sounds like the capacitor to me
@@GarageDoorGuidance no that was good from what I could see, there was no sign of leakage or selling. I ended up taking the motor to pieces and I cleaned it all out then re greased everything and it works again. It's loud, but works.
Hello, I had this problem with my genie unit, lasted for years before this happened. But now after replacing it the first time, the coupler's oval shape in the motor side of the unit stripped again after 6 months and just not too long ago it happened again after about a month of replacing the part. I've replaced the part a total of three times, last one only lasted a month. I thought it was a problem with lubrication, so I bought a lubricant made for garage door components and that did help in that the unit now operates smoothly and has never been quieter but it still strips the coupler, any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance!
xsanmiguelx sounds to me like the door may be heavier than usual an that would cause your opener to work harder. If that’s the case then I can see this happening to you.
Only other thing I can think of is either a bad part or something with the RPM sensor maybe
Thanks! Is there any test that can be done to determine if the weight of the door is in fact the problem? I have tried to manually operate the door and it feels ok to me, but I'm not an expert in garage doors nor have I compared it to other doors to know that's the case.
xsanmiguelx when you have the door in manual mode, bring it up half way. ( bout 3.5 feet off the ground ) when you let go, it should stay there. If it comes crashing down - too heavy. If it comes flying up then the springs are wound too much
Do you loosen the other side Or just one side?
Usually the back should be enough
you didn't mention that you have to take down the whole assembly from the ceiling.
But you don't.
You don’t I just had it removed to make the video easier for me
@@GarageDoorGuidance Too bad, I learned a trick how to get it out of the recessed area by another youtuber that apparently had zero issues filming using an installed one.
Use a long flat screwdriver.
ruclips.net/video/8CVs6HcIBWQ/видео.html
Oh he pronounces cupler correctly, too.
does anyone have a genie genius model gg1950 rear lens cover? I know it fits all metal smaller body motor trac dives. willing to pay shipping and the price of the item.Let me know! Thanks!
Chris Dyman that’s an ancient Dino there! Wish you luck in finding it. (:
Is this a repair that can be done while the opener and rail are still mounted to the ceiling? Can I just remove a cover and replace the coupler?
Yes but you’ll need to create some space to be able to shove it backward or the rail forward in order to have enough room to get the coupler out. Whether you loosen the front of the rail or motor itself
@@GarageDoorGuidance Great, thank you. I think I can manage that.
I would do the front 👍🏻
How do you program these?
Juan Garcia there is a small round black button next to the lightbulb socket on the left ( when you’re looking at directly at it ). Push it then push your remote 3 times, that usually does it unless you’ve got a universal remote.
@@GarageDoorGuidance Thanks for the quick response! Do you have a Instagram or something I could send you a picture on? I have a 98 screw drive and it doesn't look quite like that if I'm looking into the light bulb sockets
Juan Garcia yep @garagedoorguidance on insta
What model number is that Genie?
Sorry I don’t have it anymore and don’t know the model numbers by heart
This shows a motor that is not actually in place but on a table or on the floor. It does not tells you how to do it when the motor and screw shaft are actually on the ceiling . Do you really can move the screw backwards while it is in its regular location? that would have been a much better video.
If you can't figure out how to do it with the unit in place you probably don't have the mechanical aptitude to tackle this project.
I agree with Carlos here. The screw for at least my setup, does not move unless disconnected from the other rail segment. The video is good quality, however, how many people are going to remove the motor and the first segment of the rail/screw to do this? This would leave the rest of the rail/screw without support, unless one could find a good way to support it. Tips on handling this (maybe more common scenario) would be very helpful.
Cup-ling
I was a younger man then 😂
2001 I think but I don’t know.
Genie usually has small white sticker with the date on it as well
Is that a chicken-coopling?
Matter of fact yes
“cup-ling”
Haha yeah yeah I know now !
it's pronounced 'cupling" not coopling.
If you read the comments this has in fact been established lol
Why the heck are all you guys miss pronouncing coupling?
For fun
Obviously they're doing it for a cupple of laughs, duh.
Anybody else cringe when he says coopling? It's pronounced cupling.
