So this was REALLY helpful! I can't believe I haven't put my pronouns in my email. I also struggle with keeping emails concise and targeted especially when reaching out to professors or superiors for the first time
Hi Brianna, so glad you liked this. Very true that we all have to learn/unlearn many things every day to be more inclusive! My channel has tried to bring up the topic of diversity and inclusion in many subtle ways, this video I've made a while ago took a lot of thought but somehow has the lowest view count(ruclips.net/video/KFiSYPShPzk/видео.html). I hope we could come up with more video ideas to promote diversity and inclusion on campus. Feel free to reach out to me!
Such a great episode! I would also say that the speed of answering is crucial, especially if you are preparing to leave academia. In industry, you should respond to every email within the same day. In business, within the same hour - otherwise you should apologize for the delay. When I see PhDs answering email after a week or two, I always worry about their career prospects.
That's true. I think the problem of this delay is perfectionism. When I was a PhD student I hesitated to reply quickly because I wanted to give the "perfect" and thoughtful answer. Now, I have learned it is still better to simply reply "I have received your email, and let me take a moment to look into X and give you a more thoughtful response on X by Thursday."
I definitely dislike the REPLY ALL button. So I don't use it. I have had an experience of people fighting in the email and it was sent to all and boy, was it annoying.

@@PhDCoffeeTime I don't think that it can be excused by perfectionism. When I communicate with PhDs, I often get one-sentence answers after a month.

That's very true, quite embarrassing to be in that email thread indeed!
