The people are nice. Nepal is really underdevoloped, because of the Himalayas and less arable land.
The HDI is not indicating how nice the place or people are. It could be the nicest place on earth with the happiest people and still be last place on the HDI.
The list is set up based on three key elements:
1) long and healthy life (average age till death/healthcare system/…)
2) being knowledgeable (education/number of students/..)
3) standard of living (living situation/average income/..)
Lets be honest: Nepal is a beautiful place and probably the people are too but based on the previously named indicators it is not top tier.
The Life expectancy is 68 years - that’s 10 to 15 years less compared to the USA or most countries in Europe.
The healthcare system is not fitting international standards. The Prevalence of disease is significantly higher in Nepal than in other South Asian countries, especially in rural areas. Moreover the country's topographical and sociological diversity results in periodic epidemics of infectious diseases, epizootics and natural hazards such as floods, forest fires, landslides, and earthquakes. A large section of the population, particularly those living in rural poverty, are at risk of infection and mortality by communicable diseases, malnutrition and other health-related events.
40 percent of the Nepalese are illiterate, 30 percent of the children are not registered in any school, although schooling has been compulsory in Nepal since 1975.

Nepal is one of the most beautiful and peaceful country.
Nepal has air pollution, natural disasters, lack of good jobs, lack of healthcare, too many mountains for proper infrastructure, civil war, corrupt government, lack of access to education, poverty and extreme population density. Sure the Himalayas look nice, but Nepal is certainly not a good place to live unless you are in one of the very few rich, safe areas.

Yeah, I am born in australia, but half of my life I was in Iraq, and I can say that iraq was so beautiful. Iraq was kinda misunderstood people think that iraq is a war place. Though, many people seem happy about their environment and their leader. Just because the internet says so doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the worst.
Not just the internet, though. NK's human's rights violations are very well known and documented. A lot of defectors have spoken up about their time in the country. The only reason NK isn't ranked number 1 is because it's not even on the list (I check).

You need to study about other indices to understand HDI.. HDI is just one reflective index of development.. High HDI doesn't mean good living conditions..
UAE has a HDI of 0.89 bt nor even royals r keen on staying there.. Bhutan has HDI of 0.6 but they hav their own index based on happiness.
Basically HDI just factors development, and development doesn't mean proper living conditions.

I know why it's so terrible living in Nepal, it's because the nation is just the Himalaya Mountains and smashed between China and India who absolutely hate each other. The mountains makes it really difficult for travel, and China and India just cause a lot of distress for anyone living in between, I mean if China or India fire a nuclear missile and it malfunctions it could end up hitting Nepal or Bhutan. And also, it could take hours just to go a few kilometres because of all the rough terrain. Apart from that, the snow-capped peaks and wildlife like yaks and goats would be amazing scenery.

@The BlackMace Yeah about that,hearing is one thing but seeing is believing.This country is actually worse than it was five years ago,I can't tell you all about it but if you still don't believe me,pay it a visit but a word of caution;do not visit any of the other states apart from lagos,come with someone who knows their way around or quite preferably someone who comes from the country,and lastly watch out for custom officers at the airport because they will try to hustle some money from you and even while in the country be careful of the Nigerian police,I would know because they almost framed me for something I didn't do.
