    Short Stabyhoun description:
    The Stabyhoun is a powerfully built pointing dog with average height between 20-21 inches, which is 50-53 cm and weight is typically between 20-25 kg, which is 45-55 pounds. The females tend to be slightly smaller than males, but the difference is not extremely big.
    For a long time the Stabyhoun was crossbred with another dog breed from Friesland, the Wetterhoun. This crossbreeding was pretty common in the beggining of the 20th century, but because of it, the original purebred dogs started to dissappear. This changed in 1942, when both breeds were officially recognized and the crossbreeding was halted.

      Not yet ..... because I'm a big big fan of Belgian Shepherd Dogs and have only just heard about Stabyhouns.
      From what I've discovered so far they've a lot of similar characteristics.
      To have one of each seems very tempting.

    I live in Canada and have a 7-month old staby. She is extremely friendly and a wonderful family pet. She absolutely loves children and is very sweet and gentle with them. She learns new commands and tricks quickly, however I can attest to the stubborn streak-sometimes she seems to “choose” not to listen to commands. She does need a lot of exercise, and is obsessed with chasing small animals like squirrels (and she already caught a small mouse in our yard). She also loves digging in the yard, and needs a lot of redirection for this. Great dog for families, as long as they have time to put in to good training and lots of exercise.

    These are truly family dogs. Meaning they love to be active with the family. The are good working dogs. My Stabyhoun is great in search and rescue and special search. He has helped us find things in the house that we misplaced. At age 9 he started agility. He loved that as well. It’s not a dog to just walk around the city park or around the neighborhood every day. They need a lot more stimulation than that. So please, don’t buy one unless you have a 12 year plan with some sort of dog sport or hunting. They need to use their brain. Also teach them proper way to be home alone for a while. They are good with other pets as well. That’s it from us!

      @@amandalehtonen7732The answer is a little difficult, but i wil try to make it clear to you. In Friesland, a Provence of the Netherlands, the people are, like the Stabijhoun, proud and a little stubborn. They are the only provence that uses thei own language (Fries). The name Stabijhoun is an example of it. This is not Dutch but Frisian. houn is hond in Dutch and dog in English. Most non Frisian people call the dog Friese Stabij.
      Because most of us are fond of shortening names, we just say Stabij and Frisians like to call the dog a Bijke.
      Hope this helped a little.

    • @babboon5764
      @babboon5764 2 года назад

      @@geertbongers8909 Ah BUT In England we call dogs dogs and hounds ........ hounds more often than we call them dogs
      So Bloodhound, FoxHound, Basset Hound ........... would all be 'hound', eg in conversation 'You would not *believe* what that famin hound's gone and done' (holds up lace and small part of shredded shoe).
      Also in German 'Hund' - easily understood.
      Evidently we all have a close common language root on the *important* things.
      That said. Bijke isn't actually shorter than dog or hound.

    Origin. Is that all? A oneliner? You can clearly see, this must be a mixture of several other dogs, that got a new standard. Just watch these white legs with tiny black dots, there are more breeds having that. Maybe from some Spaniel? You can try and find video's and books on it. Besides, this is a great family dog. We had a Stabijna (in German it is a Stabeinahe) for years, that is "almost a staby", Oscar was a bit smaller. But he definitely had the Staby behaviour. Escaping and hunting was his passion. Poor ducks.
