  • First we bought a cheap Maserati Quattroporte and VW Phaeton. Then we lived with them and told you all their issues. Now it's time to drive them in ways never intended - like autocross! When our intended track day got cancelled, we set up our own course and brought along our sports cars for reference. This was a strange and wonderful day, with unexpected results!

Which is kinda misleading since it actually shares most of the technical stuff with the Bentleys of that time. A very, VERY underrated luxury car, which was possibly the best luxury sedan in the world at the time it came out, better than Audi A8, 7 series or S class.

I love how the Jetta XL’s rear view mirror kept tilting when the car cornered hard.
I quite enjoyed this. Thanks guys.

The Phaeton was some piece of engineering and design for the time. Considering it was built for driving on autobahns, it was interesting to see how fast it did this course (particularly considering it's age). To me, still a beautiful car!

This was amazing. I was really hoping to see the big boys do well, because of the laughable physics arguments. But for the Phaeton to beat the Cayman!?!? That made the video.

I really hope this video encourages more people to come autocross. This proves you don't need a sportscar to have #funwithcars. Great video guys. I love the fun you guys are having... only 2 weeks before we start our autocross season again. Shame you guys didn't have more room and less poles for a faster course... but you made the best of what you had available.

I'm the guy who set up his BRZ with an OFT and FT-86 Speedfactory's UEL catted header and the cat back exhaust; just like your FR-S. The biggest bag for the buck, though, was mounting Pilot 4S's on Enkei RPF1s. The transformation was AWESOME! Yes, the Primacy HP's wear like iron, are very controllable, but they have no grip compared to the Pilot 4s. With the Pilot's you have to be going really, really fast before the traction nannies take over.

I think you guys should add an Autocross segment to ALL the cars you review and set up a time board similar to the old TopGear. Would be interesting to see how the family vehicles like the Rav4's and the Telluride do in these settings. You know because soccer moms and dads need to be able to make a quick get away from whatever mischiefs they are committing.

In my Lotus I increased the negative camber in the front compared to the rear (actually increased it ib the rear too but the balance is now to more aggressive front)
Also try changing change tire setup to 195 front 225 rear or 205 front 235 rear.
A great everyday tire on the Lotus except for the coldest conditions is the Yokohama AD08RR. It is more expensive but really good as well

Can anyone explain what's the difference between "turn in" and "rotation"? In OZ the second word isn't in common use when describing handling.

    • @EverydayDriver
      @EverydayDriver  4 года назад +4

Turn in refers to the car's initial response to steering input. Rotation refers to the way the entire car actually spins through the corner and where you can feel the center of rotation in the car. It's possible for a car to feel good in one area and not in another. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

That's the thing about Italian cars - on paper they are terrible in every way and all the metrics about them are awful. And yet, when you drive them, they just feel magical..... P.S. Not surprised the Phaeton won - with AWD, lots of torque and an automatic, you can just slingshot it out of corners, esp. on a tight course.

    • @captainvector

They did say that the Phaeton benefited from running last. It would have been interesting to have run the Lotus and Cayman again at the end, when they were more familiar with the course and it was cleaner. And maybe they did, off camera. After all, the video is really about the two leviathans.
