Congratulations! 1968 was the first time I went with my dad and uncles. I was 8 years old, and my dad speared the only sturgeon of his life. Shortly afterwards, I was Florida bound and hadn't been able to try it again. It is/was a rush.. lol 😂😅 Love what ya'll are doing 😊
Never gone sturgeon spearing, more than likely never will, but it is a fascinating thing that goes on up north! I hope y'all get to enjoy it for years to come!
Great job Jacob!!! I love seeing the anglers or outdoorsmen doing their part and literally be a part of the conservation. But I guess we are with all species, deer, turkey, bears whatever. Hunters and fishermen are the true conservationists. Dang I'd love to tangle with a sturgeon one day. It's mind blowing how old they are!! 54 year old fish!! Crazy....crazy awesome

I now live in Florida, but originally from Michigan. I'll tell you what, absolutely no offense to anyone else but there are no better people then Midwesterners!! The love, the friendliness, the work ethic, the accent😂😂, how well we treat each other. I loooove living here in Florida but dang I get home sick sometimes bad!!! What a cool video!! Here in western NC our DNR has a river that is stocked with Sturgeon and has a hatchery that you can go see the baby fish before they are stocked into the French broad. It’s really cool to go see the fish. You can also go see the trout before they are stocked

I grew up in Shawano and remember petting 10 footers back in the 70s when they were spawning.

Grew up in Shawano also. Memories of watching a WDNR guy get flipped into the river when he got ahold of the tail end of an 8 footer, south of the Shawano dam.

Great job using your platform for information. Anyone who has caught one, big or small, (even by accident) should appreciate this fish. The wolf harvest is another firiey subject. There is a lot of opinions and information both sides don't want to listen to.

A pit tag just like the tag that they put in pets. Able to figure out some of the fishes life history.
You all (lady in the beginning of video) made the comment that there was only 40k sturgeon left I dis agree. I live just south of Memphis on Mississippi River in North Mississippi and we bank fish for catfish with night crawlers and redworms and it’s nothing to catch 15 to 20 sometimes many more at each trip ranging from 2 to 4 lbs and some time much larger. These fish do migrate. This is one of the oldest species left on earth dating back to to Cretaceous period( dinosaur days). Note we do not keep any of these fish.
@davidzlers - she was talking only about one lake . The lake Winnebago system alone has 40k adult sturgeon .

It doesn't sound like the situation is that bad. Sounds like the biologists have enough evidence to prevent the season from closing.
Now i know why Washington is letting the sea lions decimate the sturgeon in Columbia river.
Have to keep the traditional ways around. Please remind us when we can voice our opinion to keep it going. We have got to stick together and the amount of ppl THP reaches we can make a difference. Without hunting and fishing the money for conservation is non existent.

I'd be curious to know what entity petitioned the USF&W to list sturgeon as endangered? My guess would be some animal rights group.
These crazies that are NO WHERE near Lake Winnebago tell us how to manage a lake 5 minutes frome my house... i yearly take my grandsons to see the spawn. The DNR use to have a great program to do the spawning watch. That the wardens killed during cv19 i did it a few times. The last time I did the watch, the wardens I had contact with shouldn't even have any badge period.

The antihunting world is branching out into fishing and this sturgeon situation is only the start. It was low hanging fruit for them to start with years ago. They use the esl and then pick away. This is a serious deal for sturgeon spearing and fishing, but bigger picture, this is the crack that the anti fishing will use. Thanks for all the great videos THP and thanks for sharing the details of the sturgeon situation in WI. Do not trust anything the center for biological diversity says or does if you enjoy hunting and fishing
WDNR might be the gold standard in when it come to sturgeon, but when it comes to everything else they have let the people of Wisconsin down again an again. They have lost sight and have become completely worthless to people who hunt and fish. Hard to find anyone who has anything nice to say about the WDNR. Travel around the state and the disappointment is easy to find. It's sad that they have pushed away outdoorsman for political objectives.

What everyone needs to remember is that the biologists, fisheries/wildlife techs and wardens do their jobs the best they can and it the bureaucrats that ignore and overrule what the biologists say
@seanhansen9383 I agree that politicians are a huge problem. The biologists for the DNR don't care about hunting and fishing. It has become clear that all they care about is money. They also will never admit to mistakes they have made. They align too well with the politicians, and that is part of the problem.
The wardens are part of the biggest problem, all of them are 5 feet tall, pissed off, arrogant and lack any common sense and they are the people directly interacting with outdoorsman
@@adamrichmond5965 then you have had very different interactions with wardens than I have. Keep in mind I have screwed up and received citations on a few occasions from WI wardens. But I screwed up and misunderstood something the wardens were awesome and understanding explained the regulations to me and yes I got the citation but never lost license, never had gear confiscated
