Does anybody else think sports, ALL SPORTS, MLB,NHL,NBA NFL, just had a different feel in the 80's? God it was a great time to be a teenager and sports fan.
From the state of Michigan and this will always be my favorite moment. I remember it like it was yesterday sitting in the living room with my grandma and mother and this put the exclamation points on that wonderful '84 season
The conversations between Williams and Gossage and Sparky and Gibby are just absolutely classic. One of the great moments ever caught on audio as well as video. The noise of the crowd was deafening that game. I attended Tiger Stadium many times from 1962-1999. It was amazing to watch baseball AND football there. Closest seat in Major League Baseball. Unbelievable for football as well. You could here the football pads colliding and the QB's and lineman yelling. Great memories. Thanks for posting.
Tiger Stadium...best place on the planet to watch a baseball game. Loved the upper deck that went all the way around! There's something special about an upper deck homerun because you know you really got all of it!
Carl Loud in 89 or 90 I was sitting in the upper deck a little towards RF and Mark McGwire hit a home run about 10 feet away from me. I’ve been trying to find video of it for years.
After Sparky retired my brother was inline at a grocery store in Riverside Ca. Sparky lived in Thousand Oaks Ca. Silver haired guy was talking to the cashier in front of him with this gruff voice. My brother who was raised in Detroit like myself could only see part of the guys face, so he tapped him on the shoulder "excuse me sir, r u Sparky Anderson"?? Sparky turned around and grinned and said "I used to be" 😄
As this world series was happening, I was delivering pizza for Domino's in Grand Rapids Michigan. And listening to the baseball on the car radio. Wearing a Tigers hat that barely fit me because I have a big head. I was delivering a pizza to an apartment. It was on the second floor. I knocked on the door and the man inside yelled come on in he was watching the baseball game. He literally wouldn't pay for the pizza because it was the last out of the World Series. Which I watched on a customer's TV waiting for him to pay me. I will never forget this.
If only Goose had looked over and seen Sparky give Gibby the "swing away" signal, maybe he'd have thought twice. My favorite Tiger Stadium Home Run ever! I'd love to see Detroit do it again. "Bless You Boys!"
My best memory of baseball was an ordinary game I was listening to on WJR. I couldn't tell you who we were playing. But it was the nineth inning. The Tigers were ahead by one. Our opponents had runners on first and third with one out. On WJR the listener could tell by the sound of the bat hitting the ball if it was good contact or not. So, Ernie Harwell says, "Here the pitch." Then CRACK. I think that sounded good. Then Ernie says, "BASE HIT!" just like he always did. There was just enough time for my heart to sink when Ernie says, "NO WHITAKER!" Then Ernie gave a little laugh as if to say "I forgot who was playing second base." And of course the Tigers turned the double play. Thanks to Ernie that is the best play I ever saw a second baseman make, and I saw it on the radio.
I was there that evening, the crowd was all over Gossage, remember he was with the Yankee's and we don't forget things like that, There were a dozen guys down the aisle on the 1st base line yelling at Gossage, 'You Suck' was the nicest. After the last pitch my uncle grabbed my arm and said don't let go of me and we survived the crowds outside! Awesome!

My parents and older siblings went to the 2 games of the '68 series and left me with the 'baby sitter'. Now the Yankees are in the World Series all the time in the late 70's and they have TV of little babies at the games and my siblings were going to the games with their friends in NY. Sooo, I always complained about me not going in '68 soooo... my Dad in a moment of weakness says in '83 'If the Tigers go to the series again I'll get you a ticket, OK'. Well, hello '84 and it's looking good!!! Well, here we are in the World Series and my Uncle has tickets to 2 games. My Dad says I can have the ticket to Gm 5 as he wants the Gm 3 ticket AND I have to get myself to Detroit on my dime. Well, he lost that bet and I took a Greyhound to Detroit and saw GM 5 with my Uncle, 30 rows back on the first base side. It was something I'll never forget. My Uncle knew what may happen so he parked 2 miles from the stadium at a friends business and we took off right after the end. Wild scene. My Uncle, a Korean War Vet just said stay with me stay with me as we made it out of the crowd. If I could ever be so lucky again!

John Shelby gave me a bat after one when i had a broken leg. Had to use it to fend off a would be intruder. Still have the bat ;)
One of the greatest teams ever. Even though this will probably be the only time I’ll ever get to see the Tigers win one in my lifetime, it was a great memory!
god I loved this team! i was 15. Had a job working the food truck for the ABC crew. Got to go in and watch the 4th through 6th innings. I miss Sparky. he was the best
I had the pleasure of shaking hands with Sparky at the old Tiger Stadium. We were on our way out, looked over and there he was talking with some business woman. My brother-in-law and I went over and shook his hand while he was walking with her. He never broke eye contact with her. They were discussing something, yet he still offered his hand to both of us. He had a huge grip, like his hands were made of steel. Such a class act, loved by millions. Something I'll never forget.
The 84 TIGERS were the first team since the 27 Yankees to go wire to wire in 1st place! They never left 1st place all year and started the season 35-5!!!
I watched this series and listen to some of it on the radio with my father and it was just amazing. Honestly the radio was more exciting than watching it on TV.

And with that Sparky and Gibby create a memory as etched into the consciousness of this Tiger fan as Lolich leaping into Freehan's arms after beating Bob Gibson in Game 7 in 68. I'm getting a bit shorter in the hair and longer in the tooth but I feel like if I can hang on for another couple years this latest iteration of the club will give me one more October to remember. I just got out of the Marines and was at my parents' house. I was so nervous I decided to go to a little bar in Marshall Michigan called the Stage Coach for a beer. There were only 4 of us in the bar at the time. After the Tigers won, the bar was packed. I went outside, and people were honking horns and raising hell. Great memories.
I can still see it I was up above first base as a sixteen-year-old with my grandfather.... We got tickets for $100 a piece from a parking lot attendant near Michigan and Trumbull where we parked regularly....the sports highlight of my life.....I can still see it and the hair stood up on my arms
What a great moment for the Tigers; but, I love Dick Williams reaction even more. Just a knowing nod that if Gossage had thrown 3 pitches to Gibson, he would have blown 2 past him. Complete trust in his pitcher and no regrets. This moment demonstrates why baseball is the greatest sport.
Williams said in his book he didn’t regret letting Gossage change his mind to pitch to Gibson. Williams biggest mistake in this series was not benching Bobby Brown and Carmelo Martinez.
It WAS the greatest sport. Not the same game anymore: pitchers don't go 9, relievers barely pitch to 3 batters, guys are all bulked up on PEDs, pitchers take too long, players wear their caps like gang members, dwindling numbers of Americans in the game, expanded playoffs, intraleague--these are many reasons why the game blows.
@@travismcdonald6576 Williams already had two world series rings and had the underdog Padres in another. He was playing with house money. But he showed respect for Gibson...and for Goose. Goose was as responsible as anyone on that team for getting them there. The best pitcher got beat with his best pitch and a manager like Williams can live with that. That said, it was one of the few postseason moves Dick Williams ever had backfire on him. He pushed all the right buttons on many more occasions.

This might be one of my all time favorite videos I've seen on youtube! Getting that kind of audio from players and managers in baseball is absolutely unheard of! MLB has missed the boat over the years not allowing more access. It's one of the things that really helped grow the NFL and NBA over the years. Great post!
I was there. So long ago. Went to all the at-home games of that World Series. Bought the tickets with money orders for less than a couple hundred dollars. Those were the days!
At 2:33 that's Gibby saying, "You owe me fifty bucks!" to Sparky and turning to Chet Lemon and saying, "I bet him fifty!" Gibby bet Sparky fifty bucks that he'd hit a home run and did.

Actually R, it was 10 bucks. Both Gibson and Sparky confirmed that 10 dollar amount on multiple occasions over the years. Check out the documentary- The Roar of 84- I believe that it was referenced there also.
Rare footage indeed. I remember where I was and who I was with when this game was played. I was 18 and had mastered the art of drinking and gambling, and had a friend with a sports bar in his basement. I don't drink or gamble now, and I don't condone it, but man it sure was a lot of fun. Love me some Sparky. For a kid who grew up in Kalamazoo Michigan, this team inspired me to play baseball, which helped with my confidence, Which ultimately led to the good life I have now. It’s amazing the ripple effect
That was my very first tiger game. 9 yrs old, me and my mom. Gibby crushed that, she grabbed my arm, an we were outta there lol great great memory. Still remember the smells off that stadium
I was going through the Air Force police academy during this world series. Wd werent allowed to have any alcohol during training, but my senior instructor told our class that if everyone past the weeks test with 90% or better he would bring the dogs and the burgers and he would let us have a bbq. We met his challenge with the lowest score being a 93%. He was a man of his word. He showed up with the food and a tv for our day room and we watched this game. What we didn't expect was that he also brought coolers full of beer and wine coolers. He sat with us and watched the game. For a breif moment we weren't trainees and he wasn't our senior instructor. Just a bunch of guys enjiying food, beer and sports. He was from Cali and I was from Detroit so he talked some shit ti me but it was great that we felt like human beings for a little while. Some him year and half later after I was sent TDA back to Lackland for K9 school. I asked how his Padres were doing. He recognized me after that and at the end of the duty day we met up for some beers, I bought of course. I also told him thank you for what he did for our class. Best instructor I ever had in my 20 year service. Never got anything less a a 93 on any of my certs because of him.
There was so many more. I remember when he was old and came back to tigers he hit a game winner in extra inning when tigers were down by 2. He hit a 3 run homer and he was old and broke down. Never seen a guy run down to first so hard on every ground ball. He was still fast when he was old. He would run over the Catcher in the 90s when he was at end. He gave zero fucks
Sparky Anderson is legend...He has the World Series experience and accomplishments...He knew exactly what was going to happen and Kirk Gibson picked up on it and delivered...After this Gibson had the experience and had another World Series HR against Dennis Eckersly...Great Baseball match up and Moment 👍

That Padres team was actually pretty good. Templeton was one of the best short stops I've ever seen, Nettles speaks for himself, and Gossage was a beast, but Gibson could not be denied.
I certainly believe Detroit would have faced a greater chalenge had the Cubs won the national league pennant during the 1984 MLB Season. That Cubs had one hell of line-up and great pitching, it's a miracle the Padres managed to beat them. What a World Series that would have been, too bad for Baseball fans in general and Chicago Cubs in particular.
I don't doubt that Goose "Blew him away" because when Gibson came up, the good pitchers would make him look silly . He'd be chasing balls in the dirt and striking out constantly. Then in 82 I believe Gibson broke his wrist and missed 60 games. The sports radio of that time was saying "Is Gibson a bust? He's hurt a lot, he only hits .250, etc". Well, Gibson ended up being a legendary clutch player, and he really worked hard to get where he did.
Detroit was the best team in baseball ⚾️ that year, San Diego was just happy to be there, I never thought for a moment the Padres were good enough to beat that Tigers team with Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammel, Kirk Gibson etc, and Sparky Anderson as Manager they were poised to win even tho San Diego had the home field advantage it didn’t matter
One of the most towering shots ever hit in a World Series game. That thing barely missed the third deck facade at Tiger stadium. Easily close to a 500 ft bomb. It landed literally only five or six rows from the very top where people sit. Think about it Kirk Gibson probably has two of the biggest classic Legendary home runs in World Series history. Talk about a Charmed Life
Just an LA kid here. I forgot Gibson was on the Tigers before he was on the Dodgers. No wonder that swing of his looked so familiar. In 1988 the Dodgers and the Oakland A's were in the World Series (the 'California Series'). First game goes to 9th inning and Gibson (with two injured legs) comes up as designated hitter with two out. Watch the video. (I recommend the Vin Scully version as it covers the entire 'at bat') Apparently just another 'Gibson moment' in baseball history.
Sparky enjoyed baseball more than anyone. Best coach ever. He loved his players.
Most people think of his Dodgers World Series homer as "the one" - but for us Detroiters, THIS is the classic Gibson home run. Bless you boys!

Lance struck out on 3 pitches in the at bat that followed Gibby's HR.
I believe Gossage had struck Gibson out in 8 of the last 10 times he had faced him.
Gibson was 1 of 13 against Gossage going into that at bat with 8 strikeouts.
Parrish was 2 for 19 with 9 strikeouts against Gossage

What a great moment for the Tigers; but, I love Dick Williams reaction even more. Just a knowing nod that if Gossage had thrown 3 pitches to Gibson, he would have blown 2 past him. Complete trust in his pitcher and no regrets. This moment demonstrates why baseball is the greatest sport.

Williams said in his book he didn’t regret letting Gossage change his mind to pitch to Gibson. Williams biggest mistake in this series was not benching Bobby Brown and Carmelo Martinez.
It WAS the greatest sport. Not the same game anymore: pitchers don't go 9, relievers barely pitch to 3 batters, guys are all bulked up on PEDs, pitchers take too long, players wear their caps like gang members, dwindling numbers of Americans in the game, expanded playoffs, intraleague--these are many reasons why the game blows.

@@travismcdonald6576 Williams already had two world series rings and had the underdog Padres in another. He was playing with house money. But he showed respect for Gibson...and for Goose. Goose was as responsible as anyone on that team for getting them there. The best pitcher got beat with his best pitch and a manager like Williams can live with that.
That said, it was one of the few postseason moves Dick Williams ever had backfire on him. He pushed all the right buttons on many more occasions.

My brother met Sparky in a grocery store in Riverside CA. years ago after he retired from baseball.
My brother's standing in line behind this older gentleman with white hair and he hears his voice.....gruff like Sparkys......he sees his profile but not the front of his face.

Rare footage indeed. I remember where I was and who I was with when this game was played. I was 18 and had mastered the art of drinking and gambling, and had a friend with a sports bar in his basement. I don't drink or gamble now, and I don't condone it, but man it sure was a lot of fun. Goosebumps almost 40 years later
That was my very first tiger game. 9 yrs old, me and my mom. Gibby crushed that, she grabbed my arm, an we were outta there lol great great memory. Still remember the smells off that stadium
I was going through the Air Force police academy during this world series. Wd werent allowed to have any alcohol during training, but my senior instructor told our class that if everyone past the weeks test with 90% or better he would bring the dogs and the burgers and he would let us have a bbq. We met his challenge with the lowest score being a 93%. He was a man of his word. He showed up with the food and a tv for our day room and we watched this game. What we didn't expect was that he also brought coolers full of beer and wine coolers. He sat with us and watched the game. For a breif moment we weren't trainees and he wasn't our senior instructor. Just a bunch of guys enjiying food, beer and sports. He was from Cali and I was from Detroit so he talked some shit ti me but it was great that we felt like human beings for a little while.
Some him year and half later after I was sent TDA back to Lackland for K9 school. I asked how his Padres were doing. He recognized me after that and at the end of the duty day we met up for some beers, I bought of course. I also told him thank you for what he did for our class. Best instructor I ever had in my 20 year service. Never got anything less a a 93 on any of my certs because of him.

Never seen a guy run down to first so hard on every ground ball. He was still fast when he was old. He would run over the Catcher in the 90s when he was at end. He gave zero fucks

Sparky Anderson is legend...He has the World Series experience and accomplishments...He knew exactly what was going to happen and Kirk Gibson picked up on it and delivered...After this Gibson had the experience and had another World Series HR against Dennis Eckersly...Great Baseball match up and Moment 👍

That Padres team was actually pretty good. Templeton was one of the best short stops I've ever seen, Nettles speaks for himself, and Gossage was a beast, but Gibson could not be denied.

I certainly believe Detroit would have faced a greater chalenge had the Cubs won the national league pennant during the 1984 MLB Season.
That Cubs had one hell of line-up and great pitching, it's a miracle the Padres managed to beat them.

I don't doubt that Goose "Blew him away" because when Gibson came up, the good pitchers would make him look silly . He'd be chasing balls in the dirt and striking out constantly. Then in 82 I believe Gibson broke his wrist and missed 60 games. The sports radio of that time was saying "Is Gibson a bust? He's hurt a lot, he only hits .250, etc". Well, Gibson ended up being a legendary clutch player, and he really worked hard to get where he did.
Yes, at the time he was loved by fans but nobody had faith in the guy. Like you might love a fuck up brother. Sad that we lost him a few years.

Detroit was the best team in baseball ⚾️ that year, San Diego was just happy to be there, I never thought for a moment the Padres were good enough to beat that Tigers team with Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammel, Kirk Gibson etc, and Sparky Anderson as Manager they were poised to win even tho San Diego had the home field advantage it didn’t matter

One of the most towering shots ever hit in a World Series game. That thing barely missed the third deck facade at Tiger stadium. Easily close to a 500 ft bomb. It landed literally only five or six rows from the very top where people sit.

Just an LA kid here. I forgot Gibson was on the Tigers before he was on the Dodgers. No wonder that swing of his looked so familiar. In 1988 the Dodgers and the Oakland A's were in the World Series (the 'California Series'). First game goes to 9th inning and Gibson (with two injured legs) comes up as designated hitter with two out. Watch the video. (I recommend the Vin Scully version as it covers the entire 'at bat') Apparently just another 'Gibson moment' in baseball history.
